Back again from a short break, thank you all for watching & your nice likes!

 

The next steps for the large skylights are done, all window frames are ready cut, and the first grill is soldered. The large grills are a lot harder to make, they have 9 fields instead of only 6 at the smaller ones.

 

The frames, all have carved cutouts for the grills and glasses

Your build is outstanding.

It looks like you are using some kind of paper templet for your soldering.

Is it paper???

If so how do you keep it from going up in flames when you solder?????

I use an electric soldering tool, so there is nothing burning. My wife would kill me doing that in the livingroom .........

I use a lot of soldering wire for that grills, and grind them after soldering. So I get a good surface for painting, without the danger of breaking the grills.

 

Today the rest fo the grills were made, the last one still needs to be grinded, all will be painted flat black tomorrow.

 

Finally for today, the ordered pinewood has come, so I can start with the hulls frames

that's one wood I haven't tried yet,  other than plywood.   do you use it for hull planking too?   be interesting to see how it looks sanded and smooth.

I use plywood when I build "normal" frames in the upside down method, but the CAIRO needs another way of making the frames. So i have to cut the frames from 5 x 5 mm "sticks", glue them in a form, and then set them to the keels. The planks will be made from 6 x 2 mm pinewood, this is very good for such works. Even bending them is easy, when they are wet enough, and sanding is no problem. More about that will com later, next wek will be filled with more work for my home renovation, so there will be not much time for the models

Today I will continue with the windows, thanks for compliments!

Again we go on.........

 

Homeworks took a bit more time than I thought, but there is always a way to do something at the Cairo build.

I finished the paint job on the windows and grills, and could also build the keels. The pinewood is very good for working with, not too hard for cutting, but hard enough for the keels and frames.

A Restart?

NO, just a continuation.............

 

After a nice weekend I could go on again with the Cairo. I made the first set of frames, but had a smaller mistake with them. I tried to glue them free handed, but they had too large differencies i  their height so I had to dismantle them. For the next try I made a glueing form, now the frames are all at the same height.

I saw a similar jig in the building steps report from Bob Hill, but he used a closed jig, I wanted to excluse any mismatch of both sides, so i decided to make an open jig, and turn the frames after glueing one side. That way all the angles are equal.

 

That's a great idea on the frame jig.  With that many frames, that jig will get a lot of use.   The frames are looking great.

Even today I made some more frames, 15 pieces are done at the moment, and a first test how they sit at the keels is also done. The keels have cut out seats for the frames, see the pics..........

The last days wrer filled with more frame making, the front frames from No. 110 to 85 are done, and the keels are prepared to that point. I will need even more time for the next frames, a lot of them is still to build..........

Ready done. The cutouts are 1/10th of a mm wider than the frames are. This will allow me to mount the frames easy to the keels.

During coopering, when I first draw, make "rivets", cut and glue over 4000 pieces, I meet a pain itself.

 

Again, when making planking strips for decks

 

Your work is more delicate, and at the same time, much harder, demanding much more patience

There are a lot more still to make, but the first 31 are done.

Today I made the next frames, including the first frames for the boilers. They are a little different to the "normal" frames, and need more work and pieces per part.

Indeed, and there will be a lot more of them in different looks. When it comes to the rear end there will be the waterway, the narrowing to the stern and the location for the wheel, all that things need different shapes of the frames inside and outside silhouette.

Patience is what is most needed for such a big project. Somtimes the frames makning can be really boring, but there is no way to avoid that.

 

Today I made some more of the frames, but no pics from them. It would only be just the same as the last photos. More interesting things will come, when I go to the building board, to set all that things to the keels, this will be a nerve wrecking stage for me...........

I see you've increased the spacing.......are you going to continue with wider spacing till you get to the stern?   repetitive work is a bear.......but when fared and ready for planking,  your going to be happy how it will come out

I will not need all the frames in the mid section, it`s just straight. At the stern will be more frames, every second from the plan will be placed there. The space between frames 2 to 5 is really close, so I will replace frames 3 to 1 with a full piece of wood and grind that to shape. The last frames are done, today I can start with re-examine them all, and then fit the whole things together. More will come later today................

It`s a bit late for "today" as I meant yesterday, but re-examining and overworking the frames took longer than I thought. Now they all fit well to the plans, and I can start with the building board, prepare the plans, and fix the keels to the board. Next photos will come when I`m doing this, then the real work starts!

The plan sheet is fixed to the board, the keels are clamped to the plans, and some frames are glued to them.

She MUST come together , now the work starts. In times I dont glue frames to the keels, I`m studying plans and drawings from sternwheeler engines, so I will be able to draw and construct my own machine. All the plans I know at the time show too large engines, so I have to make a full new one.

Looking grand, Gerhard.  Will you be cutting notches in the rest of the keel for the frames?  If so, how?  I'd think it would be easier to cut them before mounting to the build board.

I dont think I will need more notches. I have made the cutouts for over 40 frames, this will be enough for a good stability. Most frames are set at the bow and stern sections, less in the middle, but the whole hull will be stiffened with 2mm plywood inside, and 2mm planks outside. So this will be a really solid hull, strong enough for the steam equipment. No new pics today, just setting frame after frame after frame....................
