Stunning work Timmo - simply stunning! It looks like a contemporary model rather than one from a modern kit. Bravo!

Love the look Timmo, you really have a wonderful skill for the paint effects.  Seems those cast metal pieces can look good after all!

Cheers,

Wow, your painting skills are superb.  Between your stern and the earlier panels you are quite the artist.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

It's worth giving the paint effect a go as its just a matter of trial and error. Not much further added to the Granado in recent time but a bit of excitement with the plans of the original vessel arriving from the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.

They look very cool indeed and I'm debating wether to get them framed for the wall or possibly fix/laminate it to a wooden base and then mount the vessel via brass pedestals on top. That's all a long way in the future anyway so plenty of time to think about it.

The plans cost about $35nz but the same again for postage. If I lived in the UK and postage was cheaper I'd have stuff like this all over the house- much to my wife's disgust.

post-271-0-06094000-1379120157_thumb.jpg

Probably not much building ahead for a while as my efforts have been diverted to an outdoor kitchen/BBQ/pizza oven area to work on over the warm months. If I make a hash of that it'll be back to boats.

Very cool Timmo - now I'll have to look into whether they have plans for the Fly - much to wife's disgust. If you do laminate get it done professionally unless you have talent in the area. I recently took on my own lack of talents by trying to glue paper maps to MDF backing boards. Looked good to start with, the next morning = air bubble city. It would have been fine if Golden Bay and Tasman Bay were mountain ranges...(ironically the mountain areas were all dead flat). I reckon framed and sitting on the wall behind/above the ship would be a good solution in my opinion.

Hi Timmo

Halftime - can you give me a link to where on the NMM site you get those plans? I just can't find them.

Thanks

Hi Alistair,

Here's the link http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections.html#!csearch;searchTerm=*;authority=subject-90352;collection=subject-90352

Or just go to the collections tab off the main page. Find ship, plans off the menu on the left and you can search by name and object.

It took about two weeks from the order to delivery which I thought was good seeing as they'd have to process these individually. Packaging was a sturdy cardboard tube and plenty of tissue paper.

Is this your fly? There's a few vessels bearing the name and these ones looks like your sloop.

A bit more work on the head rails. The hair bracket is provided as a flat photo etched part.

A new one was knocked up out of leftover walnut from the kit with the groove cut down the middle with a file.

The kit hair bracket is supposed to be stuck to an extension the kit adds to the bow. It's not accurate but makes for a sturdy build.

After a bit of thought this was cut off with my new jewellers saw which is proving so useful.

A test fit of the new hair bracket with some blu-tak holding it in.

post-271-0-36950900-1381561113_thumb.jpg

The rest of the head rails are fairly plain with visible ply so they get a strip of walnut grooved strip laminated on. This should tie them in with the sheer rails done a while back.

The weather very unsettled spring storm so no action on the outdoor pizza oven project so more ship work instead and pics to follow.

Progressing nicely Wayne.

That's a nice touch covering the ply edges and grooving them.

Very nice clean work Timmo ....I especially like the stern Fascia colour scheme, i am toying with the idea of black as a background colour myself, this build log will be a big help to me in the coming months....if i actually get time to do any modelling that is ( isn't work a pain ) ,and on the choice of which shade of blue I have always liked Humbrols azure blue ( cc 157 ) blue with a hint of grey......i used it on my first build the Royal Caroline and i have not found a nicer blue since,   I will post some images of her in the finished kit section so you can judge the colour.

Thanks jack. Your work so far is top stuff, especially the planking. I've checked out the Caroline - fine work indeed - and that humbrol looks really good. Nice and subdued. If I could revisit my painting I would have used that .

Hi Timmo,

Just putting in the spirketting at the moment and thinking ahead to the hawse holes. The instructions would seem to have you drill them late on in the process yet there is a picture of the forecastle sans deck that clearly has the hawse holes drilled out. I don't know if you have reached that stage but would be interested in your thoughts. In the meantime I am going to look at the plans to see if there is a hidden tip there.

Hi Craig,

I 'm still to do the hawse holes. I can't see much reason why they have to be done early at the spirketting stage. I thought it would be easy to line them up once the bow was looking largely complete.

Thanks Timmo

I'm thinking with the deck and cannon in place they may be hard to clean up from the inside. Then again I am not sure they will be seen.......

Here's what's kept me from the Granado for the last few months:

http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/1940-other-hobbies-interests-or-pastimes-that-you-enjoy/page-18

Hopefully now it's back to ship building with some fresh progress before all the other fine Granados here overtake me.

Timmo,

I have been avidly following your log, since I am seriously considering the Grenado for a future build.

I agree with the other comments here, that you're making a fantastic job of her. I am also of your opinion that the decoration, as shown by the photographs on the Jotika website, is much too bright and gaudy. I like the changes you made to the transfers too, much better. Overall you have certainly given her a contemporary 18th century appearance.

The curve of the headrails, as given in the kit, didn't look quite right to me – and even looked a tad ugly. What was your impression? Also were they painted blue?

I'm looking forward to what you do next. :)
