HMS Dreadnought 1907 by RGL - FINISHED - Zvezda - 1/350- PLASTIC

Recommended Posts

Now the funnels which will go on the boat deck. The funnels grill is very intricate and in many pieces which I had to make up a little jig and cut off and replace all the vent pipes and fabricate the pipes for and the horns. Also making up a funnel band and eyelets for rigging later. Came up nicely.

That is some painstaking fiddly work there, Greg.  And very well done.   BTW, I love that overhead 3-pics that give a birds-eye view of things.   Impressive.

Hi Greg.  I can't believe I missed this build log.  Spent time yesterday reading all your posts to catch up.  I too enjoy building plastic models.  However, I have never taken one to the level of detail you do.  I will tag along for the rest of this ride!!!

Now the belaying is done, I can add the Admirals walk and Cabin.I used the Flyhawk one as it fits better and looks a bit more natural than the Pontos one whichrequires you to use the kit supplied roof which would be problematic fitting under the lip of the fore funnel.

Next, the flag lockers. Pontos does not address these at all, but Flyhawk supplies 5 open boxes. A few open source photos from the net show the details.post-253-0-83720200-1468633965.jpgpost-253-0-35704200-1468633970.jpg. I considered getting individual cotton threads of different colours to represent the flags, but it would be just a bit too much. I used WEM grills cut and folded into the open boxes and some painted foils to represent the covers. post-253-0-22754700-1468634090_thumb.jpgpost-253-0-83890400-1468634103_thumb.jpg

I already added several belaying points for when I rig her out for flag halyards.

Next is the range finder, spare anchor and screen to the W/T and hawser reel. The spare anchor is after market, and I need to find and add another anchor yet to go near the stern searchlights.post-253-0-20725300-1468634302_thumb.jpgpost-253-0-10184300-1468634323_thumb.jpg. This is what modelling is all about. Replicating detail at an eye watering scale. I'll bet that if I was in front of it, I wouldn't be able to see half the things you have done without a magnifying glass. Great work!

Now, the bridge. I know the photos show some paint missing but I intend to fix it up afterwards. The ships open bridge, I used bits of both Pontos and Flyhawk, plus North Star for the fittings as the resin binnacle and compass directors are second to none. It all went on fairly easily. post-253-0-20659500-1468907486_thumb.jpgpost-253-0-05598400-1468907489_thumb.jpgpost-253-0-10461500-1468907492_thumb.jpg

The Compass platform just plonked on ad the Flyhawk stuff was a much better fit. post-253-0-42676400-1468907588_thumb.jpgpost-253-0-75539500-1468907590_thumb.jpgpost-253-0-66589200-1468907595_thumb.jpgpost-253-0-57283000-1468907598_thumb.jpg

A final addition was the Sephamores. No one has added these but it is referenced everywhere and a little bit of scratch building. post-253-0-22570400-1468907670_thumb.jpgpost-253-0-04519300-1468907672.jpg

And finally for scale, you cannot drink coffee when doing this. post-253-0-65862100-1468907717_thumb.jpg

Beautiful. Very nice details. I think the 1:350 scale is perfect for these warships. Good detail, not to big, not to expensive and lot of aftermarks.

Great detailing Greg; especially the semaphores.  that ruler in the last shot puts it all in perspective.

Awesome work.  I particularly like the close ups of the bridge area.  So much 'busy' ironwork going on really makes these ship so interesting.  Can spend an age just studying all the little bits and pieces.

Very inspirational.

Cheers

A small addition, the base of the foremast. Does not seem like much, but I have read on other builds people say this is fiddley, and it certainly is. The Pontos upgrade provides three brass rods which just do not like each other. My plan was to do the entire mast assembly off kit, but it is impossible as the angles of a tripod do not allow the think to go in past the boat deck. As such it has to be done on the ship itself, which means to get the correct measurements for all the other bits that will be attached have to be done on the model, increasing the risk.

There are support struts, 2 engine room telegraphs, numerous belaying points, ladders, two boat booms and 2 semaphore brackets to be added yet.

Strangely the Zvezda hit includes the support struts but not pontos, the boat booms are also missing and the 2 semaphores are also not mentioned which were all in place in 1907, no great task to build them, but Pontos has some amazing details and just forgets really obvious ones.
