BANYAN Posted February 25, 2019 Share #841 Posted February 25, 2019 Hi Rob, only what is in the build log; I have no images (or plans) of the upper deck arrangements save that of the photos showing the quarterdeck and a very partial midship bulwarks. The Contract called for 'a' (singular by my interpretation) purchase winch to the fore and main masts. I have interpreted these (based on Underhill) to be used for the topsail and topgallant halliards with the wire rope taken to and left on the winch (labour saving). Apart from that I have no idea where they were fitted but trying to interpret the profile view photo of the ship to see if one of the lines I thought to be a backstay is actually the halliards as I was wondering why the backstay had a tackle (similar to your arrangement). I too have seen images that made backstays look as if they ended in double block-n-tackle purchases. When through more study of the actual practice on board...it was made clear that the downhauls and halyards associated with topsail yards and topgallant yards was more apt to be the rigging that was causing the confusion. From knowledge of ship rigging structures it only took simple deduction to definitively recognize what I was looking at. In your case, you can deduce, by contrasting your vessel with other known vessel types. Also, it is not a stretch to gather that only one winch was indeed available for each mast..seeing that she was limited in her spar numbers. Knowing that the winch retained its cable, and used a shackle to connect to the halyard....it can be further deduced that these particular winches were dedicated to topsail and topgallant sail yard hauling. I recall saving an image of her bow off line (google probably), because she has such clipper like bow proportions, long before I even knew her build log was on MSW. I enjoyed her lines. It is so true....once you begin to run the rigging and *feel* the direction and motion of each line....locating her winches will become far easier...especially when you have known deck furniture you have to work around. Secondly...once you know the function of the line and the mechanical/geometrical confines of that line...deducing its proper purchase and belay point will become quite evident. Smooth sailing. I'm the old traditional guy........standing rigging first......and so on. I guess I maintain that method, mainly for fear of getting lost in it. it just goes to prove that there are many other methods.........I know of a couple others that rig their masts off the ship. it's refreshing to see rigging done in a genuine way........I haven't seen such workmanship, since a fella named Sailcat fished an old Cutty model out of the trash and revived the model to her former glory. your doing a fantastic job........your almost half way there! Thanks a lot Popeye..very much. I too have traditionally rigged the standing rigging first, but because I added sails...I needed to install all the sail rigging first(running rigging). Once installed, I then began to add the stays and halyards/purchases. It has proven to be a very successful way to rig, both running and standing rigging. Small jobs are easier then one big gob. I concluded that I will probably focus now on the bowsprit/jibboom rigging and stays. It looks like a simple small project in of itself....making the entirety of the build go by much faster. Once the jib stays and head gear are finished....I'll refocus and again begin working on the mizzen mast again. It just seams as the build evolves, to be the most logical direction to go. It's funny, with this particular build, the off model techniques I have adopted have actually reestablished the approach I have taken to what was once a routine process of progression....and made it more flexible, far less typical. One process, leads or distracts from the next needed move. I figured since the fore backstays were installed I might as well counter all that action by adding the jib stays and all the jib sails and their halyards and downhauls and associated blocks...finish up the bow...then move aft. First I had to devise a method repeatable to simulate all the small hearts and lanyards for the head stays. I came up with making larger hoops and bending eyelets for the attachment of the chain and rope. These little guys were roughly 1/8". Here is one finished ready for lanyards and a stay. Its opposite had a hook instead of an eye to affix to an eye bolt on the hull. Still need to rig the outer jib stays that originate from the cathead and go out to the bowsprit and jib boom. Making the chain spreader for the jib boom chain stays was a magnifying project. It is less then 1/8" triangle with 3 holes for the chain. Personally, I think the head rigging took the longest compared to the mast rigging..of a comparable section. I think things are looking good. Moving on. I figure I might as well finish up with the forward rigging, so that will be complete(Or near to it)....bringing me that much closer and giving me the boost I need to push on with the mizzen.
