Great Republic by rwiederrich - FINISHED - four masted extreme clipper - 1853

Spent some time today on the royal sail of the mizzen.  Lots left...ie...clew lines and the addition of more blocks for the main mast braces.

 

Slowly but surely..I'm working down the mast beginning with the sheet lines(chain).

Now onto the royal and its rigging.

I used the smallest alligator clips I could find for this work...their just over an inch  long.  Just can't have that much weight hanging on things...but I still need good clamping.

Worked a bit on finishing up the royals rigging.

I also spent some time finishing up the addition of the foot ropes and addition of all the eye bolts for the mizzen main yard(crossjack).

I'm more of a hack then fast....but thanks for the compliment.  I've learned what details can be avoided or masked with other detail....

Spent a bit of time today working on the topgallant sail and its rigging.  This image I just glued the sail to the yard and am supporting it till it dries.

Now I've secure the sheets to the sail and am finishing up with rigging details and buntlines.

Spent some time today working on the upper topsail install..lots more work to do but, I'm moving along.

Still have buntlines and their blocks to instal and plenty more stuff to add...but I posted the mizzen on the model.....she's looking like a clipper all right.

Sorry I haven't replied...I hurt my back last week and I'm in serious pain.  Been to the Med Doctor and the Chiropractor every other day.  I really messed things up.  Be back at the DR's again on Monday.

I hope to get back to the GR very soon....Just don't have any mobility in my left arm or neck.

Well it has been 2 weeks and I am just as miserable.  My left arm is painful and my left hand is numb.  The DR's say we are making progress. and I should be experiencing some relief.  Waiting for that day......

 

I just couldn't just sit around and whimpering in  pain, so I opted to finish up the last additions to the mizzen prior to stepping it in the model.  The lower topsail and main course are left off for ease of addition of the shrouds and ratlines...as I've done for the other masts.

Just couldn't do any more work..with an extremely painful left arm and numb hand.  Hope to get back at full speed ahead soon.

Man Rob, I hope things get better, they do say that working the areas that hurt helps with recovery, so maybe trying to work on the GR will speed up your healing.

I missed those two boats in the davits port and starboard until now. Beautiful details! Did you cover building them in this log?

I sure hope so...I've had to take 4 days off work and near daily DR appointments.

 

I'm hopeful for sure......but I need all my fingers working to do the fine rigging that is needed coming up.

Yes Bob...Briefly, back on post #403 or page 14.  Almost an after thought...I was gearing up for masting details(Finish them).

 

Thanks for the fine compliment.  I really just throw stuff together...but the recognition is very appreciated.

Thanks for the reference! Open boats are always such a challenge in smaller scales. They are a detail that often first catches the viewer's eye and so require a lot of care and attention.

Exactly.  I'm not finished with them..I still need to add the inner bumper(Yard) and finalize the oars and secure them and the boats properly.

Rob, I have neck and back problems too, if the chiropractor can't clear the problem after several tries and nerves are still so pinched that you're numb in a hand, this might be one of the rare cases where a shot of cortisone is called for to get the inflammation down enough for the chiropractor to get the vertebrae back in place. Steroids should be avoided but sometimes they can be needed.

Hey, Rob vossiewulf has the answer cortisone. My right knee cratered on me last fall to the point I could barely walk. Had a series of 2 cortisone shots and I am back to cycling to work each day. Please don't stress out about not working on the hobby. It all comes in due time. There is a season for everything and it sucks to get old!

Thanks everyone...I appreciate the concern.  My DR does not want to administer a cortisone shot at this time because the pain is not localized and therefore we are going to proceed with my chiropractic care as prescribed.

 

I have far less pain in my back and shoulder, but the remnant pain is persistent.

Not having full strength and control in my left arm I still am not seriously working on the GR.

 

I did, however, drill out more holes for the rail pins and set the belay pins..and located and drilled out eyebolt locations for the mainsail brace blocks.

 

Took some pics of the general state of the build thus far.

so sorry to hear that your having back problems.......I used to go to a chiropractor myself.  I hurt my back back in the '70s......seemed that every October,  I had to go get cracked.  I also took Flexirill  {the spelling might not be right} whenever I had pain or spasms.  this went on for quite a while,  but one year {now quite a while ago} I stopped going and stopped taking the meds.   I still have pain every now and again,  but Advil handles it good enough.

    .....now,  about my knees........   anyway.......I hope you get better......you've done some wonderful work with this project.  hate to see it get sidelined!

 

take care my friend and do take it easy.......it is true to keep working the muscles,  but don't over do {I'm constantly chasing my admiral about that}

Thanks everyone for the fine advice and sympathies.  I'm working to get better and fully recover...still not there.

Residual pain and dumbness linger and the DR says it will work itself out but nerve impingement can be tediously slow to fully recover.

 

I did spend some time working on the GR..belaying and rerunning the lines that I had previously run for the sails and yards.  Finishing with the rope coils before I proceed to the  shrouds and ratlines.  I made and added further eye bolts and rings to receive blocks about the model.  here is where I left off.
