Hi All,

It was this time last year I last worked on Borodino and spent this Christmas Break getting back into it concentrating on the rear decks.

Started with the railings again using individual PE stanchions and bending the 0.2mm rails to shape from the templates.

814922607_Railings1.thumb.JPG.675936d357ec0bc0237be76a6c61ffd3.JPG

Painted with NATO black as this is greyer than full black and matches the black paper printing of the kit and black water colour I use for touch up.

957187801_Railings2.thumb.JPG.5a46d21f5b0beca4eeb789a474f0434a.JPG

On to the 3 rear cabins.

These are pretty simple

Parts layout

165276039_Cabin481.thumb.JPG.952d4a13fb5b40c5962be530abe5e79c.JPG

Laser cut forms spaced apart with scrap balsa and card.

328432669_Cabin482.thumb.JPG.fabe80502f9bedb1e6cf48f15249abc6.JPG

Finished bottom cabin with side skylights, treated using my usual method for portholes.

The 2 upper deck cabins

I was looking forward to doing the Compass Platform as it is a nice little piece on its own right.

Parts laid out ready for assembly.

2101211744_CompassPlatform1.thumb.JPG.7a967481c6cb2cd2022e65bdc8919776.JPG

The handrail built up. This was more frustrating than the large deck railings.

1594028636_CompassPlatform2.thumb.JPG.791389076741425875265bdd8004db77.JPG

I decided to use some generic PE ladders rather than make up the paper ones for a change but still hand to make the handrail from 0.2mm wire.

2071201031_CompassPlatform3.thumb.JPG.84a91b316d3312039c1d149ea6109a6b.JPG

The centre support column has 2 ‘cones’ but I lost one so made one from styrene.  I had 2mm styrene sheet so cut and shaped it from that.  However when I was having a clean up I found the lost part on the floor and ended up using both paper parts.

The finished compass platform.  I didn’t turn out as well as I had hoped but still acceptable for me.

156575415_CompassPlatform5.thumb.JPG.d73227091910eb48aac9d8537a74f0c5.JPG

Made a start in the little deck attachments and there are a couple of hose reels which are fixed to the underside of the deck.

Parts laid out.  The spokes are 0.2mm x 2mm.

Finished hose reels

I decided to do a mock up with the parts of the rear decks made so far.  Nothing is glued and there is a lot more little bits and pieces to be made before I can start assembling.

1777394219_Mockup1.thumb.JPG.8af8cace72fc981cbace0ec2d01e491e.JPG

That’s about all.  I have relocated to Melbourne for work but my family and modelling is still in Perth so little will be done on the odd times I get home so likely the next update will be in a years time LOL

Cheers

Fantastic work .... everything looks magnificent ...... the work you have done is the few days you have been back in Perth puts my deliberations on the Mauritania skinning to shame.

Do the decks edges remain as are or will /do they get the edge treatment as well? I only ask as I am looking at my unpainted deck edges and wishing they had been given some form of edge treatment (black?) before I glued them in position.

Hi Richmond, thanks for dropping by.  Looking forward to seeing some progress on your Mauritania log!

The deck edges are covered with strips of black paper approx 1.5mm wide which are attached around the perimeter.  These are fixed flush with the top of the decks and extend down past the deck underside by approx 1mm.  I cut these strips out but didn't attach.

Currently making all the brass wire support columns that hold up the overhangs of the decks as well as the braces and gussets.  Still got sets of stairs and handrails, combing and mast sections as well as ready ammo boxes and service conduits to make before the decks can be installed proper to the hull.

Cheers

Hey Slog,

Nice to see an update on your lovely model. I understand fully the inconvenience of work getting in the way of the important stuff! Let’s face it, modelling isn’t a matter of life and death - it’s far more important than that!!!

Gee I hope not ;) :D. Good to see you back Slog, and excellent work as usual.

re: the 0.2mm wire - where did you get it? I bought the last 2 packs of it that BNA Model World had (way back about 2 years ago) and they have never re-stocked it. I can't seem to find any on the interweb :(.

EDIT - never mind, I just checked BNA again and they now have heaps :).

Hi All,

Thanks for the nice comments guys, I’ve got to say been really enjoying getting some modelling done after being away from it for a while.

This is the last progress update as head off again tomorrow.  Still working on all the bits and pieces needed for the stern decks installation.

These are a couple of simple trunking, which I suspect are lifts for the smaller deck gun ammo and a couple of what I assume are ready ammo boxes.

Ducting.thumb.JPG.59b0c3dfbad9410cc0f12e820f04503b.JPG

This is the lower mast section, which also have a couple of pulleys attached to them.  There is some photo etch pulley wheels to replace the paper part.  I also punched out some styrene spacer disks as the paper part 51d kept delaminating.

I also cheated and used 4 sections of 1mm brass rod to replace the swivels 51b & 51c as again the strips delaminated trying to bend them into cylinders.  The paper used in this kit does not like small tight bends.

1575188197_Mast1.thumb.JPG.43da459826b4edf52ddd7531dd54d117.JPG

It was easier and quicker to chemically blacken the photo etch instead of painting.

565755353_Mast2.thumb.JPG.0d2acb0a4e9d9541e1219f9f25ed1a79.JPG

Finished lower mast section.  The supplied mast part has such extra width I found it easier to just overlap and glue it as the lap join will virtually be invisible once installed on the deck with the other decks above.  In fact this whole section of mast will virtually be hidden.

627506856_Mast3.thumb.JPG.33273d9d7e7d069649b5a4a8aa8c97e9.JPG

Three sets of ladders one of which isn’t finished as still the handrails to do.  I decided to go with the paper ones again.  I didn’t punch the side holes out as when I tried in the past the whole section fell apart but decided to leave white to provide some relief. Likewise I didn’t paint the front of the tread.  I might go back and paint all black...will see.  I had to make the 0.2mm handrails from the templates and fixed them to the inside of the stringers instead of the outside as find they line up better with the deck handrails in this position.

Ladders.thumb.JPG.f9bfd0ea3abf374690d97d4e385bfc08.JPG

I reckon one more session would see me in a position to install the upper 2 stern decks. Oh well, next time.

Cheers

Slog

Great update Slog such fiddly work with fine neat results. I really like the way you switch materials and designs to find the neatest solution - it works really well visually. I think the white works really well on the treads and more importantly our HSE colleagues would love it  :)

I really like the effect with the sailor (assume its 1:200) as it gives a great visual perspective of the individual components - I wouldn't mind copying this on my build logs.

Anyway I have just set the timer for December 2019 to see deck install :)

Thanks Richmond.  I like doing these kinds of bits and pieces the most.

The 1:200 figure is actually a WWII Kriegsmarine from North Star. I got these along time ago but think it was from BNA.  They had 4 or so sets in both winter and summer outfits and one set even came with a Hitler which is always sold out.  The sets have limited poses although I do believe they have new sets with more varied poses and different navies.  I do like to include them to get an idea of scale and the figure works out to be 1800mm in real life.

However saying that, the ladders do look a bit overscale, but the generic photo etc ladders had the same tread spacing.

Hi All,

Continuing on with the rear decks I attached the perimeter strip, the cabin, mast section and hose reels to the underside of the deck.

There were a couple of braces at the front to finish and attach and a deck extension piece to fit against the perimeter strip. Then another support panel which I think a catwalk joins against.

The 0.5mm support columns were chemically blackened and glued into position.

Quality HD photographs and I am still struggling to find any faults :) - those railings and stairs look magnificent. I would have been scared to fit the railing until I had fitted all the other parts - Can I assume you have appropriate above the line controls in place 😉

Thanks to all for the likes.

Thanks for the kind words Richmond. I find it easier to do the rails first as they are pretty springy and having clear decks allows me to place bits and bobs on it to position the rail for progressively gluing.

Unfortunately I'm working below the line as it is a behavioral thing...I just try and be mindful of the rest of the model 😀.

Thanks Greg, your latest build is pretty special and looking sweet.

Hi all,

Well back in Perth for a long weekend and made a start on the boat decks.

Assembly 97 is the fore boat deck and all the paper parts are duplicated in 0.5mm laser cut card so will use those.

Surprisingly they supply 2 of the trussed frame which is strange as the paper part 97 folded come to roughly the same thickness as the laser cut card.  I think they made a mistake here as it would have been better to supply an aft frame instead of 2 fore frames.

166244895_BoatDeck10.thumb.JPG.f772a55cc16002c549ad3827e63cea54.JPG

The part numbers on the paper parts and the diagram match however the notation on the laser cut cradle parts (h) & (f) are back to front but easy to avoid mistakes with a bit of thought.

The support beams 97(a) appear to be the wrong length.  After I assembled the frame and trial fitted it as can be seen there is a space both sides where I assumed the brackets should touch the superstructure.  A look at the computer render shows this gap also.  I decided I would just install as is.

1788855615_BoatDeck11.thumb.JPG.66ae61f150322c6b7322df1e04c8db4c.JPG

Fairly straight forward assembly.  I sprayed with Tamiya NATO Black

1707667723_BoatDeck12.thumb.JPG.4774baf7c678e3503a5834b6081a8971.JPG

The fore boat deck in place but not glued as still need access beneath.

1043849093_BoatDeck13.thumb.JPG.002fe428a84a058ebe2b0720cebc7c06.JPG

Then it was on to the aft boat deck and most of the parts are again replicated by the laser cut forms except strangely Part 98.  This is disappointing as will be a pain to cut out.  This part instead of two 97s as mentioned earlier would have been better.

819250584_BoatDeck20.thumb.JPG.0a7143f4f456ee3c8e92da1dc3d5c332.JPG

The kit provides 2 catwalk options; either a ‘wood’ or a ‘steel’ grate.  The photo etch provides both as well and I went with the ‘wood’ for no other reason than a change of colour from the usual black so far.

638207652_BoatDeck21.thumb.JPG.d15a7b9ef46970ad620a5e901ab1d6b4.JPG

The laser cut supports assembled but the spacing doesn’t seem equal.

569797795_BoatDeck22.thumb.JPG.0b117ee056bb2245a2c5ed61ed9d7df7.JPG

Placing it on the Paper ‘deck’, supports 98( c) are too short.  Both the laser cut and paper part as shown are the same but this is an easy fix.

1675521691_BoatDeck23.thumb.JPG.82dccb2d9934fec212d28b739ffa17cf.JPG

Assembled parts all painted. The structure was again painted with Tamiya NATO Black.  I masked up and sprayed the Photo-etch grating’s but I didn’t have a darker more browny brown which is a pity as it’s a bit light. There is a longer centre catwalk which I again masked up and painted the photo-etch part.  Nothing is glued.

26080854_BoatDeck24.thumb.JPG.fbc2f9ef7d8b52165e1d4473dbe4ade1.JPG

Shown temporary in place.  There is centre catwalk which circles the funnel and will probably tackle this next.  Nothing glued yet until I fix the relationship with centre catwalk.

444978879_BoatDeck25.thumb.JPG.11523f0f70971a63c06f2f7e145ea369.JPG

An overall shot of the boat decks.  I can look forward to making eleven (I think) ship’s boats, eight of which sit in the shown cradles.

206346245_BoatDeckBoth.thumb.JPG.cb2e706652b39106066419533adc0a64.JPG

I hope to get back to Perth again at the end of October for more progress.

Cheers

Slog

Good to see you back at it Slog, and all to your usual excellent standard :) . Have fun with those ship's boats.

I found in some of my Halinski kits that they sometimes print two of the same parts which are very delicate and easy to ruin in case you do just that. Maybe the same thinking here?

Hi all,

Well back in Perth for a few days and some more progress.

From left to right; I didn’t notice that there were catwalks for the fore boat deck last time round as not in the assembly diagrams but again used the photo etch parts and this time used generic handrails down one side of each, hence the posts don’t fully match the grate pattern but it was too difficult trying to glue individual stanchions.  Also didn’t notice that the rear boat deck catwalk was supposed to have handrails so added more generic stuff but this restricted access to paint the one ‘wood’ section so left overall black.

I was not happy with the brown I originally sprayed the wood grates so stripped them back with lacquer thinners and resprayed.  A better brown but still not quite right yet but will leave them as is now.

899211427_1_Redo.thumb.JPG.918c6ba77ecc97584975c6c641d928fa.JPG

Now on to the new works which is the midships catwalk which surrounds the funnel and connects the fore and aft boat decks.  Again I used the laser cut supports and brackets where provided.  There are also 4 small sets of stairs required.545690658_2Midshipcatwalk.thumb.JPG.de088f49775f9242b7cfe26f66fbd712.JPG

The double thickness catwalk has been laminated together and started trimming to final shape and also shown is the handrails ready for paint.  These are the usual 0.2mm rails bent to shape over the templates and threaded through the holes in 3-rail PE stanchions .  Despite the shapes of these I am getting pretty quick with less mistakes due to all the practice I have had with these for the fore and aft decks.

Handrails fitted to the catwalk with CA glue.  Pretty happy how these turned out except the openings for the stairs aren’t very plumb.  Once all black won’t be so obvious.

The underside supports and braces, pretty straight forward and quick.  I was worried about the laminated curved section but no issues.

Supports fitted to the underside and again straight forward.

The finished catwalk.  I couldn’t decide whether to paint only the handrails and supports and leave the paper the printed black but decided I will just spray the whole assembly with NATO black for speed and convenience plus it will match the fore and aft decks and the walk ways done previously. I punched a couple of circles of masking tape to mark where the compasses go out on the wings.

Dry fitted in place.  I will need to work on a couple of sets of stairs from the main deck before final fitting and I will want to make the funnel to aid in final placement before gluing permanently.

1658024882_8Inplace.thumb.JPG.a3280673816000930fad3fe5bed29a2c.JPG

A couple of shots with all the sections and grating loosely in place.  It will need a fair bit of tweeking to get the 3 sections aligned as there is slight clashes between the centre sections and the fore and aft walk ways due to the hand rails but nothing major to upset it.

10.thumb.JPG.128c385d5fa39ad4088de32236ca58b0.JPG

All the above is 19 hours of work.  The last major assemblies now are the funnels, gun turrets and the ships boats after that countless small parts and railings.

Heading back to Melbourne tonight and likely won’t be home again until Christmas.

Cheers

Hi All,

Thanks for all the likes and comments.  Well back in Perth for the Christmas break and first off made all the ladders in preparation for fitting the boat decks and central walkways.  Made a mess of the curved ladder 140P but will get lost in the clutter so not too bothered.

577021692_1Ladders.thumb.JPG.1eb257eca2869e68579cfdfcaa123076.JPG

The fore and aft boat decks went on easily enough after careful positioning and the gratings glued into place.  I trimmed a section off the fore handrails where they clashed with the central walkway (not in place yet).

Before fitting the central walkway I wanted to check that I wouldn’t encounter any clashes with the funnel so made up the laser cut forms without glue.  I really enjoy using the LC forms as the fit is perfect.

Since I enjoyed assembling the rear funnel I made the fore one as well and placed to see the effect.  These will add another splash of colour being yellow.  For some reason I always imagined them to be a lot bigger than they are.

Central walkway in place and now time to place all the ladders.  I am guessing these go here as don’t mention or show in the diagrams.

Small one from the central walkway to the rear boat deck.

Ladders from ‘wings’ down to the main deck.

And finally an overhead shot of the boat decks and central walkway…dodgy curved ladder can be seen, oh well.

1388356944_8Aerial.thumb.jpg.c921f7f95f2634893a3ec0c163c64fea.jpg

I have a couple more ladders to do I think but can't find any mention of them in the diagrams so will go through the parts sheets and see if anything jumps out.  But a bit over the ladders now so no rush.

Still got to after the new year before heading off so not sure what to work on now.  I might do all the little bits and pieces next or get stuck in to the last of the larger stuff.  Not really feeling it for the ships boats yet.

Cheers

Hi all,

Thanks for the likes.

Thanks for the link Richmond, a lot of information to be found.  The rigging is of particular interest also as the computer renders supplied in my kit isn’t very clear where they terminate.

Since I enjoyed mocking up the LC funnels  I decided I would do the 6 turrets for the 6” guns.

Photo showing the paper parts and the brass barrels I will use. These are really nice as usual and match length of the paper part pretty closely.  They also have an extra tang at the rear which will come in handy for fixing which I will show later.

All the laser cut forms cut out and trimmed up.

Did I previously say laser cut forms are a perfect fit?  Perhaps I should have said usually, as discovered a problem with the shape if the internal walls.

It would appear that parts 76a and 76b have been cut incorrectly on one side so that the tab fits perfectly in one horizontal surface and is flush with the outside as shown in the rear assembly.

And on the other edge where it has too much removed the tab extends through as shown in the front assembly.

1706411565_3Ohdear.thumb.JPG.df08e22254435a4bd7475bc911f1cb75.JPG

The assembly on the left shows the how everything fits nicely on the side with the correct laser cutting and is all tight and on the right shows what happens if I keep the incorrect side tabs flush with the external surface.  Also the flats have been cut to different lines so even if the tabs are pushed fully through the horizontal surface would be angled.

Investigating further turns out I will need to assemble so that the tabs are flush on the external surfaces to keep the height of the turret correct for the side skins to fit.  This will require some careful assembly to keep the top and bottom surfaces of the turret parallel.

946953872_4Ohdear.thumb.JPG.081f8c860462a13b4d49244baa6c37fe.JPG

To make everything square and parallel I glued the turrets up in the following order.  Firstly on the left I glued the correct fitting parts together.  The middle one shows the previous part turned upside down and pressed through the horizontal panel using the glass to stop the tabs going too far through. The assembly on the right shows some scrap glued in to strengthen the walls since the only contact is with the tabs.

1705976729_5glueorder.thumb.JPG.70897192b2679c4a2711a26f9a2085c1.JPG

I glued in some scrap on the flat sides to help with handling and to keep the top and bottom parallel when gluing on the skins.  I also put extra thickness of support on both sides of the rear wall as this is where the skin joins.

1334832833_6strengthing.thumb.JPG.1858ba6e61346f87050f6996ed3974b9.JPG

Okay the incorrect cut Laser forms has really caught me out.  I thought I had done enough pre-assembly checks to know where I am at.  But when I came to fit the back plate for the guns I noticed it was considerably shorter at first needed to work out if I should hold it up to the roof or down to the floor.  The roof is the way to go placing the barrels nicely in the openings.

Also can see the tang of the barrel which will hold it nicely in place once I drill a hole; already marked on the back plate.

The side skins should just about fit by leaving off the under turret skin (number 76c shown on the right of the photo) so not a total disaster.

1773313960_7skins.thumb.JPG.3448b1c66c6ea89a856484a000bd25bc.JPG

The tang on the rear of the barrel is 1mm so drilling a 0.9mm gives the barrels a snug fit.  I will probably use epoxy glue when ready to permanently install.  The barrels were sprayed with Tamiya  NATO Black

189864169_8barrels.thumb.JPG.58c161e0b4062b8389796d1d529e4a7a.JPG

Next up is to cut out and fit all the skins and detail parts.

Cheers

Hi Slog,

I've found that when skinning things like the turret sides it's best to glue a piece of scrap behind the join and roll and glue the join together first, then slip the skin over the LC frame rather than gluing the skin to the frame and then finishing off the join. A notch would need to be cut into the top or bottom to clear the joining strip, and dry-fitting is essential of course. A couple of spots of glue is all that's needed to hold the skin to the frame. This stops any starved cow effect, which is usually caused by over-gluing an edge. Check the posts in my Bulgar loco log where I fit the boiler skins to the frames to see what I mean.

P.S. I bet that bent ladder ends up getting the better of you and will get replaced ;) :D .

Cheers, Danny
