Greek Bireme by Robin Lous - FINISHED - Dusek - Scale 1:72 - First wooden ship build

Recommended Posts

Little progress (but glad it's done).

59e016679fc09_biremebuild165.jpg.91b79dec1a6e4fce915e9c01b78612a7.jpg

The 5 blocks in the top of the mast.

59e01668bdda0_biremebuild166.jpg.317ebaed199303580579222e2e6cfeb8.jpg

Was a pain to attach the line running down from the mast to the tiny pin rail. And it was an outright nightmare to neatly loop the rest of the rope and make it look okeyish.

3 more lines will come down there when the yard goes on. Not looking forward to that, but I had a bit of practise doing this one, so ...uhm..pfff!

But...before I do the yard, I'll make the rope railing on the outside. 6 (fairly short) stanchions per side...1 rope per side only.

And again....I can take a good look at the Olkas. I can't thank Messis enough for the Olkas photo's!

59e0166a693f5_biremebuild167.jpg.d86e29a47b1901aabdac22b48682cb88.jpg

I must do this before the yard, because I have to drill small holes in the top of the frames to pin the stanchions.

More soon,

Robin :)

Thanks OC!

After 8 hours on the shipyard I finished the last construction part of the build.

The outer railing...

59e14e6e2b9e4_biremebuild168.jpg.5f7aff438ad410fe4c6a3cd6ec07c3e3.jpg

59e14e6fccfcb_biremebuild169.jpg.725dc44d2a9a76e3e100e244a7db0284.jpg

I decided not to make the sun roof, because I think it won't make it any nicer.

What's left to do is already pre fabricated. The yards with all the rigging attached to it, the oars and the steering oars.

Oh..wait...I still need to make a base.

Yard is next...more soon.

Robin :)

The yard is fixed to the mast...

59e240ba480e2_biremebuild170.jpg.15668fd02fe87a1b01a378ac31fc54b3.jpg

3 bloks involved. 1 on the yard and 2 on the mast.

Like this...

59e240a639e1b_biremebuild095.png.e5f823285a57e0f86fc6ef6727e2bb9d.png

With so many lines involved, I'm not sure when to secure a rope to the pinrail.

I'm afraid when I fix a line it might slack after I fixed the next...or next...or the one after that.

I guess there's a lot to adjust later on. I keep the glue away until I know what will happen.

And I have no clue what will happen.:D

More soon...scary stuff this!

All the lines tied to the pinrails. I must now make nice looking bundles and loops of the rest of the lines.

I also must find a way to get the 8 loose hanging lines underneath the sail to hang down and cut them to the right lenght after that.

When done I need to make a work stand to get the oars at the same height.

Oars soon...oh my...so looking forward to see the oars in place.:o

And all the sudden I must start thinking about a next build...still undecided. Exciting!

More soon,

Robin :)

Busy week, so not much shipyard time until friday, but I couldn't resist to dry fit the oars on one side...

Found shipyard time...a late nigther I'll probably regret tomorrow..ah well. :(

Finished attaching the lines to the pin rails...

59e54c7ec949b_biremebuild180.jpg.da54e622da2601e193fcae08aa65bd8c.jpg

And found a solution for the free hanging lines underneath the sail...pointing in all directions.

59e54c7a5efbf_biremebuild177.jpg.def2cf4ab75271662e944f9959848e60.jpg

Made a mixture of PVA wood glue and water and soaked the lines with it. Clamps and let dry...

59e54c7c2bd12_biremebuild178.jpg.c35d4be9a5e2e2ca7dfde7b39b9c4819.jpg

The result was nice...the lines were straight, but still not hanging down enough.

Clamps on again and a tiny drop of CA glue on the lines just underneath the sail.

Bending this stiff part of the lines with a tweezer until it looked ok.

59e54c7d6ca04_biremebuild179.jpg.568c469dd207a38e25fb4d38565f79cc.jpg

Not 100% straight down, but that's fine. Much better anyway...I think.

Oars next!

Well then...after a frantic week at work some days off now.

And it started nicely with the arrival of the display case I ordered from http://www.sora-shop.com/

A nice affordable (€64 including p&p) plexiglass/acrylic made to measure display case.

Two days from ordering to my doorstep. I think that's amazing! Made to measure in Germany...delivered in the Netherlands 2 days later! :o

It's 50cm x 22cm x 22cm.

59e9d7bd95558_biremebuild181.jpg.c52693a03258dcebf597afe836628e54.jpg

59e9d7bed7383_biremebuild182.jpg.901a0f1e4bab910700de76e3f6f7d784.jpg

I like it a lot!

People might not like the presence of the (tiny) nuts and bolts, but I don't mind...it's the small price you pay for a DIY display case.

Construction was idiot proof...I managed to do it!:D

I'll use the 2 holes in the base (the 2 layers of acrylic bolted to eachother there) to make a stand.

Will get some longer bolts and brass tube to slide over them. brass strips about 5mm wide and 5cm long on top of them. 2 sided tape and that's it.

I have a minimalistic stand in mind....less is more.

Now making the wooden base and jigs to attach the oars and I'm waiting for the thin lead foil (from Verlinden) to make the bags for the lower oars.

I hope to receive this today.

More soon,

Robin :)

Very nice case for an even nicer ship! I'm too busy looking at the model to notice the bolts. :D

Thanks guys!

The base is made of 2 layers, so the case slides over the top layer and sits on the bottom layer.

Can also choose a flush base or no base.

Very nice case Robin, I'm interested to see how you are going to use that foil.

P.S. - If you go to your nearest Canadian Tire store you will be able to find the "transparent soft rubber feet", they have several different sizes;)

Meh...I mean...in Dutch:  transparante anti slip dopjes voor onder de kast...en hele kleintjes op de standaard, zodat de romp niet verschuift.

I can show them tomorrow:D

But, for now...I had to finish the display stand before I do the oars. When they're on...the ship will become an almost untouchable hedgehog.

So better do it now....(warning...picture heavy explanation:P)

59ea6399b6d44_biremebuild185.jpg.df1be43725bfb2142b6ca75f4dc226a5.jpg

Replaced the short bolt and nut holding the 2 slabs together with a brass 25 mm M4 bolt.

A 5 mm brass tube...30mm long over the bolt...secured with 2 part epoxy glue.

59ea639ad84e0_biremebuild186.jpg.f0df70a7ef5fe07c3771ebc59ab6e381.jpg

The "cradles" supporting the hull.

Made of 2 layers of 0,4mm brass sheet. Two layers of thin sheet glued together makes it a stiff construction.

A hole in the lower sheet to attach the 4mm tube that will slide into the 5mm tube on the base.

59ea639c938b5_biremebuild187.jpg.53e5b3046ecf3f86b0c2d03f692437c6.jpg

Ready...some final bending needed to make it fit the bottom of the hull.

I never thought attaching oars would be easy, but I had plenty of time to think about this....over a year by now.

At some point I realised it's a must to build a jig for this. I want my oars to line up neatly without support, because I think that will look most spectacular.

So, this is the result of scratching the back of my head for a year...

Behold...."le jig". (that's French Canadian I think :D)

59eb6c8d9ea94_biremebuild190.jpg.44949b84ef11db752f9a2d0deb668c7d.jpg

59eb6c8bf2137_biremebuild189.jpg.bca6ee0a31360aa57cc7b9d237cce5ca.jpg

The ship is fixed so it can't move...at all...and made a support for the oars at the right height.

With a top layer of foamboard, so I can pin the oar blades in an upright position.

I'll do a dry fit with all the oars to see where they must end on the foamboard and mark the spots.

This will result in a slightly curved line following the curve of the side of the ship...so not a straight line.

I don't think I can do more to be well prepared, so tomorrow this final chapter begins.

I hope it will end well...scary stuff.

This is what I do with it....

59ebd4c726a30_biremebuild191.jpg.d6e4f3c52afb4c2a0a0808f87e5bd864.jpg

I made the leather sleeves (Greek: Askomata) to prevent water from coming in through the lower oar-ports.

Note: the ports need to be fairly large, because the oar blades must fit through them to be able to pull them in...and to replace broken oars from the inside.

59ebd4c857797_biremebuild192.jpg.7b466f97b6dd2d8272229246304fbbf9.jpg

First I glue the oar to the copper sliding plate and tholepin on the inside. Then I slide the sleeve inside the hole and fix it with a tiny drop of CA glue on the inside.

59ebd4c97c7b6_biremebuild193.jpg.e46906a18cc9ba18dd08d5d841602fad.jpg

Then I close the sleeve with tweezers and a piece of string.

59ebd4caa5ef8_biremebuild194.jpg.565b5e122350ebdaf457c3540550e28e.jpg

And finally I paint the sleeve leather brown.

And that was my first oar! :champagne:

Very nice solution! I never would have thought about leather sleeves for water tightness but not only does that make sense it gives you a great way to install the oars. Well done! :D
