Oh dear. Sorry for putting you to all that extra work - that's certainly not what I intended. Still, I think you're doing the right thing and you'll end up happier with it.

Lovely crisp work, Patrick.

I bet the piece of wood just died of fright when it saw that big spanner. If at first you don't succeed . . . use a bigger hammer.

Patrick,

The wire on the sides of the cabin ceiling, is that for lighting?

Indeed

I'm not really that good with electricity so I bought a ready-made set. The disadvantage is that all lights are at the same distance from each other.
That is why it is sometimes a puzzle to get the lights in the right place.

I have added some bolts in the upper wales.

Bolts that remain visible on the inside are also fitted. So that it looks that these bolts run through the frame and the wale.

Back from vacation and learned a lot from my 2 new books.
And, discovered that my model should actually have 2 stern chasers. Most warships and armed merchantmen had these. :default_wallbash:
I might try to add 2 closed canon ports but these are problems for later.

IMG_20190404_193025.thumb.jpg.1f944f155f062b6dd45856f6444eef69.jpg

In the meantime, further work has been done on the rear castle.

And I started on a capstan. The intention is to build something like this drawing.

Next step is painting the capstan.
A painted (replica) example of the Batavia from the early 17th century was a challenge I couldn't resist.

kgPICT0558.jpg.b97206a625f8b1ef759db425cefe0da0.jpg
Thus, I did an attempt to paint this "color scheme". White is the basic color and red green as the secondary colors.

IMG_20190409_191846.thumb.jpg.eb363d0f72e33c53eb3d81a9a702b8f1.jpgIMG_20190410_185409.thumb.jpg.d9769253ba45c8c8b0726f6c41861969.jpgIMG_20190410_185753.thumb.jpg.687921a904602d987036adfa72fd8ea3.jpgIMG_20190410_191530.thumb.jpg.df12e2707313c55277996e9e639ff4a9.jpgIMG_20190410_195532.thumb.jpg.c24e12cfd59df18ba58e3c3bfce9267a.jpg
The basis on which the capstan stands is thicker than the deck plancks.
Of course I forgot this during deck planking ...

So plan B. Make it look like the capstan stands on thicker planks. And add an extra tree nail here and there in the original planking.

On the capstan is just where I don't want to place them permanently. Then I have no space left at all.

My idea was that the guns deployed there were only in position during combat operations.
So there is no place left to operate the capstan.

During non combat operations secured to the side of the ship.
Then there is room to operate the capstan.

But that's just an assumption.

The capstan of the Genoese ship Lomellina, built in 1503, has slots for two bars, each of which passes right through the capstan. The slots are at different heights above the deck.

A reconstruction of the Mary Rose's capstan (with removable bars) is shown below. This seems identical to the one Patrick is making.

It seems unlikely to me that a capstan, even as early as the 16th century, would have its bars permanently in place getting in the way.

Thank you everyone for the nice comments and good advice.

It looks that I am reasonably correct with my model capstan (The Mary Rose and San Juan whale ship capstans are  quite identical )
Since nobody could take a photo in the 16th century and nobody neatly stated where the bars were stored. I will have to find a place myself.

And no, its not made in Italy

Made in Verrebroek. ;)

Btw.

The meaning of the name "Verrebroek" (the town where we live).

verre, means : higher dry land

broek, means  wetland area

So Verrebroek is founded on a higher dry land in  a swampy area.

Now this area is all dry land. But in the Middle Ages this area was swampy.
Not so far away from our home, during the expansion works of the port of Antwerp, people even found a cog while digging a new dock.
