Steven it looks like the Bounty to me. But I could easily be mistaken.

Patrick Nice work on the Golden Hind, I remember as a little boy my father worked on a very small model of the Golden hind probably not much longer that 6 inches or so I remember the name and the wooden block that was the hull shape.

A "mini" Bounty.

Building two ships simultaneously is too difficult for my poor brain...

So, this yard is temporarily on hold

Hi Patrick,

It is believed that grating was already used on Mary Rose.

In the second half of the 16th century, this can be said with confidence.

Followed your example and renamed your own theme.

P.S. Perhaps this link will help with the rigging of Golden Hind: https://www.shipmodeling.ru/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=73413&start=885

Patrick, I believe you are underestimating your 'poor' brain.

Myself, I prefer to work at two or three different projects at the same time. There comes always a moment that you have to cease the work at one model due to drying time, lack of material, further research or simply because you have had it for a while with that model. With a back-up model you can always continue.

I apply this method with my military models. The maximum build ever was about 10 in scratch at the same time (the Hotchkiss H35 / 39 family).
More than one ship at the same time simply does not work for me.
Not enough experience with ships, I think.

Good news.

At the request of my supervisor, Felix, this shipyard has been restarted.

Thanks Michael,

Here we go:

Make a rough block ( only the 3 holes for the discs are currently the correct size).

Sand in the correct shape and saw and file a groove across the 3 other grooves

Glue a wooden piece in the groove.

Something good and something bad.

Bad :(

Flanders' Modelling Festival organized by IPMS Antwerp (Belgium).   Canceled because of corona.  http://www.ipms.be/New-IPMS/Calendar/Calendar.html

For me the most important modeling event of the year .

Just canceled our holiday to Tenerife (Canary Islands)
We were leaving on monday. But the possibility that we could no longer return to Belgium had become too dangerous.
Our health is more important than our luxury.

Good (very good) news

More time for modeling ;)

And i finnaly succeeded in Building a “cover” for the helmsman.  This is actually one of the main reasons why this build was on hold for a few months.

I had 2 problems to solve

1.This is where the electrical wires come. How do I make a socket here and how do I "camouflage" this socket?

2.Many drawings and almost all model kits of ships from this era show a cover. But the drawings whit this  cover are almost certainly all from a later period. And almost all model kits are based on these drawings.

I only find a few images from this era that show something like a cover above the helmsman.

IMG_20200309_191349.thumb.jpg.08c824aa013f7beb4e0ff724cfe05033.jpgIMG_20200309_191426.thumb.jpg.f2d293be597b0873e6d69a4d94eda62c.jpgIMG_20200309_191620.thumb.jpg.2b462b0c46d3de95dd6e436bf76977d6.jpg

But, a removable cover is my only option to hide the electrical wires and socket

Historical correct or not, iI have to build this cover.

Make and insert a plug (power plug?) Tested this plug and the LED lights are still working

IMG_20200309_191840.thumb.jpg.678972e2b1d9cf9ed1c2cc92fcca79ac.jpg

Starting making the cover. The first part of the build was some trial and error. Once past this stage, there was more structure in the build. The false wal will be painted black

Hey Patrick,

Very nice work. I am pleased to see that your wood shipyard is again fully operational.

Too bad for your holyday in Tenerife!  And also for the cancelled IPMS festival, I planned to go to the Franciliades 2020 on April 25 in the vicinity of Paris with the local modeling friends, but that is also cancelled. In present circumstances it wouldn't be wise anyway to go. Maybe there will be an other opportunity in Autumn.

Tenerife holidays.
Good news about this, the hotel and the flights have been rebooked to november with a minimal extra cost. :Whew:

Except for travel to and from my work. I'll just stay home.
The only way not to get corona is avoid contact as much as possible.

The model :

The last 3 doors of this model are ready and installed.

IMG_20200319_184525.thumb.jpg.d3bc49635ded56f7e229030d179843b3.jpgIMG_20200319_184622.thumb.jpg.f8156ce1bc37887b7b6096b38c0ca74f.jpgIMG_20200322_090529.thumb.jpg.6867ccf80d476dc86b2ed3df6cabc29b.jpgIMG_20200322_101406.thumb.jpg.d3cabfd34c1478f5cec9f938f95c75db.jpgIMG_20200322_101441.thumb.jpg.d5654dcd6ef3d1e52b9c29682a583eaa.jpg

And we continue with reason 2 why this build was on hold.... Grating.

Question 1
Should there be grating or no grating on the deck.
Question 2
How does 16th century grating look like.
Question 3
What do we put above the grating in case of bad weather.

The only real info I find for now is only on the Vasa. And yes, this ship is 50 years "younger" than my model. But i prefer to continue with the grating on this ship as an example .

Photos of a real ship show more than drawings and paintings.

IMG_20200321_123328.thumb.jpg.6c13d99a91439873951d0d3ffda60031.jpgIMG_20200321_123342.thumb.jpg.3dbc8fc532df14cd6b55f0fdd744b970.jpg

It took a while before I understood the complete construction of this grating. But, finally. I think I get it.

My power tools are too big to cut the small grating. So small planks are glued together and then sawed.  The downside is that grating made in this way is quite fragile.
But for the purpose that I need them this is not a problem.

IMG_20200321_123304.thumb.jpg.672bc139454ca31f785774e22a9be8f4.jpg

Step 1 has started. Let's hope my plan works.

Work in progress, more about "why and how" follows

Glad you've re-booked your holiday to Tenerife.

My wife and I were set to go to Brazil in Early April - all fell through as well - Temporarily frightening times world-wide.

On the +side shipyards everywhere must be fully open - I've even just gotten back to mine in between Netflix and HBO haha

The work on the grating is started, and it is going better than expected.

Step 1

Step 2 dry fitting

Step 3

Step 3

Dry fitted the unpainted grating. I leave them like this for a few days. If I still find them ok this way,   then they are painted and glued.

The ship is coming along nicely and your attention to all the details is amazing.

My cat does something similar. He catches whatever he can. Breaks its neck and brings me the offering and then looks at me in a way, "look here, what I got you".

Grating finnished :Whew:

Something was wrong with my first idea. The planks were on top of the beams and the layout was wrong

First i make grooves in the "beams"

The large piece is made in parts. And is placed dry fitted to allow the adhesive to cure further.
That way I have more certainty that everything will fit.

Patrick,

You definitely have the touch. The grate 2.0 is perfect. Your model has so much character. It makes you want to shrink yourself down, so that you can go explore the ship. I wouldn’t want to get between those two cannon though.

Kurt

Thanks.

By the time these guns are loaded and fired. You are already far, far away

Looking at drawings and paintings of this era, the ropes of the mainsail and foresail usually pass through the railing (hull) at these places.
So, i make something like thisIMG_20200331_110639.thumb.jpg.e326cb16b799a973cd5e4854c253e5d2.jpg

Belaying pins and staghorns.

First, this post is more to say that I was probably doing wrong things. The parts mounted in the previous post have been partially removed.

IMG_20200411_163058.thumb.jpg.70fc5b7ad289737501b7373888da84c7.jpg

Belaying pins.
Presumably these came into use slowly in the early 17th century. But, maybe a few will be placed into the beakhead.

Staghorns
Hopefully these came into use earlier because I'm going to apply them.

If I can't use belaying pins. To what do I tie my ropes?
All I can think is a methode  like this. Wooden rails (n° 103) and staghorns (n°72 and 75)

IMG_20200411_164518.thumb.jpg.c3f0e21d7ea0ea1a032c44d10c15525a.jpg

The sheets of the lower sails (n°46 and 48) will go to the staghorns

IMG_20200411_164550.thumb.jpg.b40edd212ce83dfc22d4aa6a581f749b.jpg

Adding the rails in progress and a staghorn almost ready (And I forgot a little bit of paint on the left)

A figurehead.   Backer's very first attempt at wood carving.

In the 16th century, I don't think anyone in England knew what a pelican looked like. The sculptor took as an example a duck with a strange beak  ;)...
And probably this ship didn't even have a figurehead.

The first part of this build happened outside (nice spring weather). And the weird way of clamping has a reason. Good at eye level and I don't have to bend over.
Uses tools : A piece of cherrywood, jigsaw, Stanley knife, sandpaper and files.

The "pelican duck" gets some shape. Hopefully it will look like a real Pelican someday
