Anna Maria 1694 by firdajan - FINISHED - CARD - 1:96

Thank you friends for your replies.

Louie da fly: I don´t think it´s close to complete - I have to make the most important equipment for the sailing ship - sails :) and do the second part of running rigging, that´s quite a lot.

tkay 11: decks are made of strips of foils, and patinated with anilin water colors, then coated with matt colorless paint. see pics below.

Bowsprit is finally finished and rigged,  I hope I did it right. And now, as I mentioned, I can to start to make sails.

I stand corrected - I thought you were making her without sails!

She looks brilliant without them, anyway, but there's a particular beauty about the shapes of the sails of ships of this period. It must be something to do with the proportions - a beauty that such vessels as clippers just don't have.

I just noticed this built and she is beautiful. I find fluits some of the more unique vessels. Yours looks really good and the hips are nicely curved.

Thanks friends for your replies !

Louie da fly: All my ships are with sails. Maybe there´s some kind of magic for me :) And, yes, you´re right.

flying dutchman2: thank you ;) Yes, fluyts were unique vessels , I think I did a good choice.

Sails are made. I used a piece of silk shirt.  At first I impregnated the cloth using the mix of glue / water 1/20. After drying I flat it, and cut sails  out. Then you can glue threads. Then I punctured sails for hanging, impregnated them once again and forming by fohn. That´s all. :) But it took a while.

Those sails look really good. I can see the glue would hold them in the curved shape as though the wind is blowing on them once it dried, but how did you get them to take the shape?

Thank you friends for your replies.

Louie da fly: I used my wife´s fohn^_^ you can see it on the fourth picture.

All sails are on the ship. Now I can continue with second part of running rigging, and I have to made some necessary parts of the ship:)

Thank you, friends, for your replies.

Abhovi: I know, they should. I didn´t do them for a practical reason: because of cleaning sails ( I have a small vacuum cleaner , and they are a pretty good obstacles). There´s no problem to make it.

But I have one question: what is the way they are led? As I could read from some of plans, they are led through blocks placed on a standing rigging. Sometimes they are led through yard ( as I can see on your models ).

Which is the right way?

Btw, on the model of Swan/ ghost ship you made, I don´t see them ( see the picture );)

Looks good Jan!

Shouldn't there be brails on the front side of the sails?

Great job man,

Ab, I was thinking the same...😄

And how about mizzen top-sail bow-lines and 'martnet and brails' on the mizzen?  Were they on the Anna Maria?

Beautiful model, Jan! Makes me more and more want to do the "Hollandse Tweedekker" I have on my list! 👍

Hello Jan,

If you don't want to put the brails on your model, just don't do it. The few people who knows about them will forgive you. 🙂

The question was how were they rigged. There are two kinds of brails, the ones coming from the side of the sails and the ones coming from the bottom. The first kind passes a sheave on the front side of the yard ( a turtle block) and then through a block attached to the top, or to the noose of the stay down to deck. The second kind pass through the clamp on the yard, also through a block hanging from the top or from the stay.

As to my models: I must confess that I cheat with these ropes. I led them to the yard and secure them there, to prevent a too lage number of ropes going down to the deck.

And about my Swan: the ropes are there, you just have to look close. Because this is a very small ship the there is only one brail to the middel of the low end of the sail instead of the usual two. They are hardly visible, but they are there, I assure you.

Thank you, friends.

Abhovi: thank you and other for forgiving:) But: you give me good idea. If you let me, I will cheat too:D. Now I have solution how to do brails to be visible and how to remove them before the cleaning.

About cleaning... I have 10 ships, from the biggest ( La Couronne ) to the smallest ( Nina ) at home . I clean them once a year: hull by a wet brush , sails, rigging and yards by mini vacuum cleaner. It takes several days, and mainly sails is  hard to clean. I don´t want to have ships in plastic boxes.

Perhaps I have a tip for you Jan. Cleaning a model mostly means dusting the rigging (and vacuuming after that). For cleaning the rigging I always use an ostrich feather. These feathers a a bit fatty and the dust sticks to the feather surprisingly easily. For the rest of the deck I use paint brushes in various sizes and in the end I remove the gathered dust with a 1/2 cm wide flexible tube, attached to a vacuum-cleaner.

Just a hint.

Dear Friends,

The ship is finished already.  I hope that everything is OK now ( almost ;) ) I´m sure you´ll see a lot of mistakes there , but it´s just a model.

Thank to you all for your suppport.
