I found some left over rudder chain from my victory build which fitted nicely not a link to much or to little DSC00887.jpg.1265ae65f7969a68becc33463f99a7e6.jpg

did a bit more work on the transom and while waiting for paint to dry put together one of the lanterns from caldercraft and built some of the billings supplied swivel guns

Hello all back with an update on the Bounty

I keep finding excuses not to work on that transom so made more deck pieces and decided to bring the ship up to date on both sides I try not to let one side get to far ahead of the other.DSC00919.jpg.685485f9f6721141a22305791fc8a4ea.jpgDSC00920.jpg.8f1d7de1586cc1fa8694921df2c420b8.jpgDSC00921.jpg.d94b485ad92e2af0d7fb5b3994e9ebd1.jpgDSC00922.jpg.b04e9dc97b923125b626b59f5f492de4.jpgDSC00923.jpg.159529f768dd62c2a712b7dc1343892a.jpgDSC00925.jpg.db7dc0cdcb048f4b67198845ddc5035a.jpgDSC00926.jpg.e6cc9cdb484b2889d5dc6ed810d2e107.jpg

Here is the transom as she sits at the minute

DSC00942.jpg.0031427d81dc1d8048e2e37a8aa9e35f.jpgDSC00943.jpg.c717e55ed63e56eddb8032ae9058de1b.jpgDSC00944.jpg.b6b8a6198cc187ab368bfe2f354e9169.jpgDSC00945.jpg.0b2df6436c97c66c2b84de4af7d7bfea.jpg

I think I will lower the height of the flag locker and drop the lanterns down a tad,the locker is still removeable and that is why I haven't fitted a door on it yet.

there is also some work still  required around the gallery windows.

I really should be cracking on with these parts but the past few days this part of the builkd has really slowed me down I am not sure why cause I know if I set my mind to it and dive in I will handle it .

today being Saturday a with some free time I decided to get the build speeding along again and just wanted a part I could build with not much thought so I tackled the dead eyes and channels and the ladders

The deck is progressing nicely and im running out of things I can build to avoid that transom ,the last thing after the transom will be to scratch build of heavily modify the windlash then I can crack on with the masts . thanks for viewing

Today I decided to tackle the windlash you may recall the original parts from page one when I built some of it

I used the sides as a template but modified it here and there and added some

Hi Steve,

Great windlass! And the rest of the deck furniture is looking mighty fine too. I worked from John McKay's book as well and it was a great resource as there was no real internet yet when I built the Bounty. It is possible to write him and order large scale drawings at a reasonable price. I ordered a number of drawings to help me with the rigging. The drawings in the book are a tad small to work from. It won't be long before you get to that stage at the rate you're going!

Happy building!

That windlass turned out extremely well and looks great on your Bounty along with all the other fine parts you have made. Great job!

Every time my father visits he looks at my ships and asked me the same question (do you know how many ropes are on a ship ?) I reply no dad and he says one and refers to the rope on the bell apparently all others are lines .

I don't know if this is true or where he has aqquired this random fact perhaps to much discovery channel however both my uncle and grandfather both served in the navy and maybe it has came from one of them not sure .

I took the ship to the living room to catch the low evening sun I love the sunlight on her and the shadows casted

hello Steve......all I gotta say is WOW!   Bounty looks good. :)    you've learned a few valuable lessons with this build...scratch building is one of them.   you made some good choices with the blocks and dead eyes........so true that kits supply fittings that are too large.   you did well with the dead eye chain plates......I would have suggested getting the Amati ones.   now that I bought some,  I don't think I could use anything else.    as for the chains down under......I've never used the parts Billing supplied in their kits.   I made them from thin metal rod.

58fec30a6a214_1.JPG.73449a81d8fcad6bdd2bf16c0a1db0fa.JPG

I cut the eye bolts off and wrap them around a piece of scrap wood,  cut to the length needed to fasten them to the hull.   here they are all ready for paint and to be fastened on my Gothenborg.

here is what they look like after paint and being touched up.

I think this arrangement will look better on the bounty,  rather than the way Billing's shows them.   again....you've done a super job on her. keep up the great work! :)

Back to work on the bounty started off easy fixing down the windlass and installing anchor ropes

the largest line provided with the kit is 1mm and white it seemed a bit clean looking and slightly small I had some 1.5mm left over from my victory build its a bit fuzzy looking so I ran it thru some bee,s wax that helped a bit but still fuzzy,i do prefer it to the kit stuff tho

DSC00993.jpg.18f1152929ab1350ef115a4cfafc370e.jpgDSC00994.jpg.7ad932a635619b95875ffd650c7122a9.jpgDSC00995.jpg.c4d94e0897f2c18b06a934f82615c4f8.jpg

I will offcourse add rope coils later

DSC00996.jpg.c2565a12144b70df70426334ac090355.jpgDSC00997.jpg.cbac32274320ab08d91af1bae5fcb2e8.jpg

With my limited knowledge of tall ships common sense would tell me both anchor lines would not be wound to the windlass at once however I really don't know perhaps someone could help explain ,also why only wound around the windlass three times with a small coil of rope surely the anchor  could not reach the sea bed or is there more rope below deck and the windlass simply takes the slack

I guess im asking your advice guys on the look of the rope scale wise and how to rig the windlass

thanks

When I wanted to rename my Mare Nostrum I printed the name on some clear labels.  The one problem I had was that the label itself showed as well as the printing. The label was glossy which I couldn't hide.  I had thought that it might have worked out better if I put down a layer of Polyurethane then "buried" the label in the wet Poly then covered it was another coat of Polyurethane. Unfortunately I didn't do any experiments. However if you're thinking of going that route I would be glad to try a couple of different scenarios so you can see the results.  However, I would have to think that clear decal sheets are a lot thinner than the clear sheets I used and may not be a problem at all.

Sorry for taking so long but I did a small experiment and the results aren't too promising.  Have a look at what I've achieved.  I did 4 tests

1. I just put the label on bare wood.

2. I put the label on bare wood then added a coat of polyurethane

3. I put the label on top of a coat of polyurethane.

4.  I put the label on top of a coat of polyurethane, then put a coat of polyurethane on top of the label.

From what I've been seeing is that the polyurethane makes the label shine.  The plain label has the best results but I know you want to add some type of finish.

I have to admit that the poly is still wet.  If tomorrow I see different results I will certainly post them.

Thank you very much derek for taking the time to do that I'm def gonna go with the decall print paper , can I ask if they are printed with a laser printer or inkjet printer as I see two diff types of the decall paper available on eBay and as my printer is done I'm considering getting a new type of printer before purchasing the right type of decall paper

I like the rope! Anchor ropes are rather large diameter so I think your choice looks good. Most ships stored their anchor ropes below decks. They would have had enough rope to get the anchor down to the sea bed with in reason. They anchored in harbor not open ocean but would have still had a very long rope. My model of the Bounty, (granted is a cheap, very basic model) has holes in the deck behind the windlass that the ropes were led through then up and over the windlass a few turns and then out. You may check out some other Bounty builds for sure as I know there are a lot on mine that are not accurate but in short, yes, there should be more rope for the anchors running below deck somewhere.  :D

Steve, they were printed on a laser printer.  I used Avery #5667 labels which are meant for a laser printer.

Bowsprit construction and fitted I am almost ready for masts but have some tidying to do on deck first like adding rope coils to the canons and various other small things that I know if I don't do first may never get done and it would be a shame to leave the small finish details out so I will create a snag list of all the small things to do before progressing to the masts.DSC00993.jpg.3efabcb61e497f991a817f0da15510c7.jpgDSC00994.jpg.591ba5cde06882b68ae7f95f47b65d2c.jpgDSC00995.jpg.749f853de659fa5ce810fe5c46fdd5a6.jpgDSC00996.jpg.49b6e1d88e4fcfe640c1ddd7db0398cf.jpgDSC00997.jpg.4f49cc113635ed57b83182537710d1aa.jpgDSC01000.jpg.3d48479f15206fe44fc326a273d0a445.jpgDSC01002.jpg.60f8bdb1fe1f87bba762322b96dbef07.jpgDSC01003.jpg.458ae0d9d29d6cdec291ee5a479ef85d.jpgDSC01004.jpg.6168f744145020630469c5a6ba3f857e.jpgDSC01005.jpg.aacca4beaf6019eeb7178054adab6857.jpgDSC01006.jpg.52859e77fed92b5d315e94e6375c275a.jpgDSC01007.jpg.41ff7cea45d8b2afb8247d4c29c9a4c9.jpgDSC01008.jpg.8a69fc3fc3b1dae97820cd23a091b7af.jpgDSC01010.jpg.8d4c8fe95780e63fba5cbf4ce65ad299.jpg
