Hello all been tidying up on board ive fitted all pieces now that I had prepared and im calling the transom area of the ship complete ,I will at a later date add the word BOUNTY but need to buy a new printer as I will go with the decal paper suggested by EJ and kindly demonstrated by Derek ,ive dropped the height of the lanterns a tad and made a start on the anchors I will show the anchors in my next post.

This evening I spent a few relaxing hours making rope coils I enjoy task like this where not much thought is required I can just loss a few hours lost in my work, this is the reason im looking forward to the rigging believe it or not  I love to sit and tie rat line after rat line and just get lost in it then next thing four hours have disappeared below is how I make my rope coils

Great stuff!!  I hope that you don't mind but I'm convinced that your build will be the best point of reference for when I start to fit mine out. Thank you in advance.

Thank you Nigel for the kind words I don't consider my bounty as anywhere near 100 percent accurate but I like to think it is instantly regoniseable as the bounty and anyone that knows the bounty will reconise most features on board . I'm truly honoured that others enjoy following and can actually Benefit from something I have done ,I think it is important to understand no matter what manufacturers kit you are building you have to understand just because they decided to do something a particular way doesn't make it right ,other sources are very important such as the john mckay book thanks again for following Nigel and the overly kind comments I look forward to seeing progress on your own bounty and urge any others members to check in on it and offer any advice that could benefit

Actually Steve your build sucks.  I saw a couple of planks not perfectly aligned.  Seriously you can do better than this.  I'm disappointed.;)

Hello all work started on the masts there wont be to much scratch stuff in this department I simply don't have enough knowledge of tall ships in real life,so I will mostly go as the kit intended

,I did square the top of the mast billings doesent show this but I learnt this from my panart kit and there is a few other small things I will add along the way.DSC01045.jpg.e14cbaf9896fcb9d889a865aa64cd468.jpgDSC01046.jpg.9aa37a7af2bd9c1ea8372a29aa390324.jpgDSC01050.jpg.4ed6e0af20403330eca354123dfbba02.jpgDSC01051.jpg.4e171594d65cfb3c35be2456ed5080ff.jpgDSC01052.jpg.fde62e5b5d512a4784979fb7e3cda12d.jpgDSC01053.jpg.81813f1e6aefc276e0844a66e54f762d.jpgDSC01054.jpg.67179c43abbf8ceca48cec302620fc2e.jpgDSC01056.jpg.7d653c45d01f5bab150f70e00a2f6b52.jpgDSC01068.jpg.7cb9c92327e8b6c76927a9a195b2b4de.jpgDSC01072.jpg.6d259ccbbbdf4c3a682e7dc1f54d79ce.jpgDSC01073.jpg.03b92ddbbca64a48d822e59bd0eab3de.jpg

its real nice to have a full size plan to work off ,in my previous panart kit the masts where so big the drawing was showed in 75% size which meant I spent a lot of time using a calculater

some advice please guys I am currently making up an order for cornwall model ships to replace my blocks with walnut in preparation to rigging and came across a possible alternative for the decal paper I found some photo etched letters six mm high perfect for my transom its a bit expensive for what it is but it would cost me that anyway for decal paper whats your thoughts guys

DSC01070.jpg.e21a4d093f2b7684b4f1cff394a2fd8e.jpg

the next thing is the ships boat this is what billings offers yes its a block of wood

I came across this little kit on cornwall model ships has anyone used something like this before I cant see from there photo if they have a clinker effect and does anyone that used them find they painted up nice this one is the wrong scale but its that same size as what billings wants me to carve from the block of wood it also comes with oars and grapple hook which is niceDSC01071.jpg.8a5bf69e00a49ab5ee8c9664fc1b7994.jpg

very nice progress Steve :)     the lettering would be good......a lot better than a decal.   as far as the block of wood......I'd do it too :D  :D    as long as your comfortable with the size of the boat,  you should get it.....but look around first.  Cornwall deals with fitting from a number of places.....one of them might have a better fit.  I order from them too.   I had to chuckle with the lettering picture.....where it says "others bought this"   they list the 5 mm belaying pins {I ordered some for the Thermopylae}. ;)  :D

Thanks Popeye sometimes I just need another person to bounce ideas off and unfortunately none of my friends or family have any interest in my hobby , bit of a coincidence also earlier I caught your update where you where making the small engine and using the fighting top piece from a billings kit for a radiator 🙂

that's what MSW is all about :)   I need to order some stuff from Cornwall too......in fact,  some more of those belaying pins  {I don't have enough}.   heck,  I'm gonna waste four of them on the engine......they will make great spark plugs ;)    I save all those crazy odds and ends......you never know when they will come in handy.  a few other of my favorite ideas will come into play....I'll be sure to explain them out.  they may be something you can use ;)   thanks for look'in in on that project......poor thing has been dormant for quite some time.

Hello gentlemen and Derek :)

with the mast fighting tops and crosstrees fitted I have applied paint and now started work on the yard arms ,both the masts and yards will be rigged with as many blocks and fittings as possible before I can place them and commence standing rigging.

with the masts set in I can take sizes for a display cabinet and work on it at the same time when I fancy a break and some workshop time.

I also took the opportunity to take out the Victory and show the two in comparison ,the victory is 1/78 scale and the Bounty 1/50DSC01087.jpg.aef2910737d9077b0d9351d6743cbbf7.jpgDSC01088.jpg.d23f747980bf5df32dc851c77121e693.jpgDSC01089.jpg.71b443da6beb8d3622f7f490025e6d60.jpgDSC01090.jpg.42a2f57d7811fa19dc873443c4581c16.jpgDSC01091.jpg.fca0d2b517ca453a0734060b68540a33.jpg

Very nice. Your Victory is a great looking model also. I always like showing different ships side by side even when they are not the same scale. I find it interesting to compare the various aspects between the ships, rigging, guns, deck furniture and decorations. Always cool to see how the same items changed over the years and adapted to the various ships.

Thanks Blighty and Thanks E J It was actually your log that I stole the idea to compare the ships I did notice a scale jcb digger in the backround in your log it would have been nice if you compared it also :)

Ive started to detail the masts by adding rope lashings

DSC01092.jpg.9b07844b57e7e31cada5f227fe01e4a6.jpgDSC01093.jpg.02f24264b687cdf0a38804e228d9bd58.jpg

and the yard arms im adding small strips in the center of the masts aprox 1/4 of the full lengh not shown by billings

DSC01094.jpg.e583fc51ac2254f13383b2650233d13c.jpgDSC01095.jpg.988572cf5f22fc3bf3c0489be1ba6706.jpg

Im also adding footropes not shown by billings

DSC01096.jpg.600cb3ca270a3bab35dca7f12796beff.jpgDSC01097.jpg.1c5264f2d44848055c6da5ae20949171.jpgDSC01098.jpg.ec7c1c88b5bc2b147fa4044c0375de8e.jpg

I see in a lot of logs people asking how the yard arms are attached to the mast I like to use a small 0.8mm brass pin and after running rigging begins and the mast are pulled onto the pin in all directions they will go nowhere

DSC01099.jpg.2895d28192549f97fdfbe1395ab9d509.jpgDSC01100.jpg.bd488d9227e5eff1f83142b577b7755c.jpgDSC01101.jpg.05c938fcd9803f4bbc65d86e79e8454d.jpgDSC01102.jpg.2a7f8623d1465259a658bb05820ed9d1.jpg

I will continue onward with the rest of the yardarms in the same fashion and hopefully by thurs my order will arrive containing blocks and I can begin to rig the masts and yardarms

thanks for viewing

Thanks Keith I've been thinking about where to start my shourds I'm not sure about your billings victory but with the billings bounty the drawing gives you a measurement out from the keel then another to the foremast giving you the correct angle of the foremast then measurements to the main and from main to mizzen ,I have the bowsprit pretty well tensioned down so was considering putting up a temp forward stay from the foremast and beginning my shrouds from there but I'm open to all and any input I can see your theory in starting at the mizzen interested to hear from others

thanks

I've always gone bow to stern with my rigging. No real reason just the way I rig. I've heard some people like to rig from the middle outward so you are not reaching over lines. I keep meaning to try that way but habits can be hard to break. :P I think it is mostly whatever way you are comfortable with but like you said, new ideas and reasoning are always welcome!

it makes life easier for rigging the forestays- no masses of shrouds to negotiate- i do rig temporary forstays to stop the masts being pulled out of line. As regards billings Victory Steve the mizzen and main pass through two decks so these guide the angle of the masts. I have the billings bounty in my stash too and have the frames in place and the deck planked so far so know what you mean:D

Hello all

not much to report on the bounty finished the yard arms and footropes and added a handraill to each mast

I ordered all new walnut blocks for the rigging a ships boat and various other items last Tuesday but they have only been dispatched today due to some of the blocks not being in stock

so it may be mon tues before I get them I could if I was really impatient set the foremast in and begin shrouds however I would rather wait for the blocks and rig as many on to the masts and yards as possible before starting the standing rigging.

in the mean time im playing about with a kit I got second hand just in the process of starting a log on that after this post

Hi Steve, I've just been looking at your 'lump of wood' for the small boat as I got something similar with mine.  However. have you checked this log out

Take a look at his construction method for his boats it's genius (but seriously difficult).  As I was only supplied one small boat with my kit I'm going to have a go at producing the larger of the two boats as per John McKay.

Cheers

Nigel

Thanks Nigel they sure are some fine looking boats in tallships log I must admit on my previous build I found the boats particularly challenging ,as a beginner I assumed the little boats would surely be easier than the ship boy was I wrong,I have the boat kit in order from Cornwall showed in an earlier post but still haven't received my order from 24 days ago ,I have spoken with Cornwall and they think it may have been sent to wrong address and they have assured me a new order is on its way to me so fingers crossed it should arrive soon .i must add I have never had a problem with this company in the past and I am sure it's a genuine mistake

Thanks ken I enjoy your log also it is very informative I also enjoy the lovely photos of real life ships and I particularly liked your post on the large scale rc planes that is something I am strongly considering getting into and would like to pick your brain sometime on uk suppliers and usefull forums brands of kit etc.

with out my rigging blocks I am keeping busy pre fitting upper shourds and rat lines etc I will put some pics up and explain a bit more later on this evening

really nice progress Steve......the woolings and the added features add so much to the model :)    kits in general leave a lot of these aspects out.....that's what makes them so generic.  it's up to us modelers to do the research and add them in.  your doing a swell job in that dept. ;)

I usually rig from the bow to the stern as well.   the bow spirit is lashed with it's stays and is a good counter for the rigging as I go back.  I do the stays first,  then the shrouds,  and then the back stays.

the thing to keep in mind with rigging,  is to stay as close to 'zero tension' as possible.  keeping the tension equal will prevent other lines from sagging.......it can be a hard balancing act.  supporting the yards with a pin is common,  but some suspend them with the rigging as well.

great job on your bounty....she's look'in really sweet! :)
