HMS ROYAL KATHERINE 1664 by Doris - 1/55 - CARD

Recommended Posts

Handmade deadeyes for mainstay and forestay...
All these elements are made using only basic tools. The ropes are painted with suitable paint and impregnated by flat clear coat ( Tamiya TS-80). The mainstay thickness is about 2,4mm.

I have also started making own wooden blocks, so far only larger sizes, the smaller ones I will probably use from a CNC machine.

And now I am going to make them such way from this wreck pattern:

So enjoy the pics from progress and have a great Christmas time.

Kind regards,
Doris

You’ve been away from MSW for some time, Doris, but certainly not idle ! Wow ! What a return !

Tremendous progress, and always so beautiful ! I am sorry I cannot contribute more to your thread with more than praise, but your talent is way above my own modelling skills 🙂

Simply stunning work Doris; I especially like the glasswork in the lanterns and stern windows - very lifelike looking effect.

Thank you for the early Christmas present, Doris! We'll all be happy with just periodic updates. No need to add  time-consuming captions.

I'm amused by the main shroud going into the seat-of-ease. Must have been crowded in there!

The screen of the seat of ease on the main channel - made according to original paintings from that period:

Are you sure it is a seat-of-ease? It might be it, or it might be something else...

Check out this thread:

(I am trying to imagine these poor souls trying to get inside that barrel in order to ease themselves, while having the "urge".... Where was the entrance to this structure? A door through the bulwark? From the top of this barrel?).
Also, Druxey had a point - this thing hungs directly above a gunport, which would make the crew of this gun "difficult" to operate it during the "use" of this facility, I think...

Hello dear friends,
thank you all very much for your kind words, praise and comments, that is a great honour for me and i do appreciate your support a lot.

Yesterday I finished ladders on shrouds, this is always so boring work for me, but this time I have decided to do it in the beginning....

To Dziadeczek: Yes, I am sure, this is a screen around the seat of ease, you can see under it the outlet (it was not always used there) which drains dirt to the sea - so as not to pollute the hull of the ship. I have these information from one of the greatest experts on ships construction and history. In Czech forum you can find him as Kpt.KL.
The crew got inside through the top hole as they climbed down the shroud. During the battle this screen was removed. It is not positioned immediately above a gun port but is shifted a bit to the side.

Here are some Van de Velde drawings with various design of that thing:

30eddee01c21917427f01a0026b086be.thumb.jpg.abae9fc32e6026e692ab854271e20134.jpg1748008648_velde-1-portraitoftheEnglish96-gunfirst-rateshipLondon1670-EDIT_.thumb.jpg.50d8434090649168f38144feb9affa7e.jpgvelde-charles-c1676_.thumb.jpg.2e01e90b76280f15a1816da65b13719c.jpgpy9361_28122bd2-0f9b-4317-98e6-edfacc6dd93c_1024x1024.jpg.5620636d785a001d80328cc80821270d.jpg

And these smaller barrels could be intended for salted meat etc. as was mentioned above:
