US Brig Syren by Nirvana - Model Shipways

Recommended Posts

So, the simplest of simplest,  my jig for cutting 40 each of 15/32" parts.

I used the stick for the height between sills and lintel, placed it on right hand side of the blade of my chop saw.

A 1x1" aluminium L profile sat in place with strong masking tape (not good at all when it comes to cover unwanted painted area, ripps the surface where it is attached off).

As a trial I cut 10 posts, and all came out perfect for cannon openings. Cutting time less than a minute. 20170719_075514.thumb.jpg.1d0d6727b9d7f653c1ba61b0d269b368.jpg20170719_075508.thumb.jpg.a755aa6a6e1aa504db809e6e97a773fe.jpg

Jack look at Amazon I got mine for $30. I wasn't going to bother but the wood for these parts are just big enough that other methods can be an issue. I have the Chopper II. which I love and use frequently for things like this but this time the wood is just too big.

PS Idea #2. if you notice that Dr. Per is using one of my custom bulkhead braces for a stop on the chop saw. I went to home depot and bought a 3 ft length of aluminum 90 degree angle and cut it down to a handful of 4 inch high braces. I use these and any handy clamp when installing bulkheads to ensure they everything is square. Now if only I can get them back :)

Current Builds - 18th Century Longboat, MS Syren

Completed Builds - MS Bluenose, Panart BatteStation Cross section, Endevour J Boat Half Hull, Windego Half Hull, R/C T37 Breezing Along, R/C Victoria 32, SolCat 18

On the shelf - Panart San Felipe, Euromodel Ajax, C.Mamoli America,

Its a sailor's Life for me! :10_1_10:

Am now in a switching mode between Syren but also Bluenose. Meaning I am alternating between the two.

Must have missed your post.  Yes, I have the aluminum 90 degree pieces also for aligning bulkheads and other things also. Have them in 1x1 and 2x2 inch sizes of various short lengths.

Chop saw looks like the mini that Micro-Mark sells ! [not the Proxxon brand]

Jack, I think I bought the saw from Micro-Mark, but in the future I will do my homework before buying from them.

This as they carry a lot of "ripp-offs" from China.

One great example is the table saw, which is a Proxxon ripp-off.

One of the reasons I hesitate to use Amazon, eBay or ???   I'll take a look a Harbor Freight, they have a store near me so I can do a "touchee feelee".

Sadly to say, but yes..... many of their items are straight rip offs. Easy to see. One of their drill press is a no-name of a Skil drill press. Or was don't know if they still carry the item.

While I am waiting for varnish to dry on Bluenose I tried out the red colors I have available.

I think I found my red color.

It's the one to the right, I will make a try of mixing them as well. Could probably turn out nice.
