That's a fine looking fishing boat you're making there! 😉

I'm a bit late with this input about getting wire straight (for your skylight) but there is a simple trick I'd like to share. I learned it during my training as a mechanic:

To straighten a wire you have to pull it hard enough to lengthen it just a little bit. Usually I take a wire of perhaps 50 cm length and fix one end real good in a vice. Then I grab the other end with a pair of tongs and pull really hard. If you use enough force, you observe that the wire gets a little bit longer - and perhaps a µ thinner - wile all the little bends disappear.

I might be late for a further improvement of those bars but you should try it if you have further use for wires. Usually I use this technique also for wires I have to bend - e.g. into rings - to have smooth  pieces to start with.

Regards

Peter

Working on the mast and details, some of the items are extremely small but still have to have detailing added.

With my little razor blade saw I was (hehe, just made a palindrome) able to rip a 0.42mm out from a 3x3mm stock.

I am using my scanner/printer to get the details on a separate printout. Yes, the copy is a 100% match. Pinning it down on a corkboard and adding on with kitchen wrap to make notes on.

Works for me and the result are more than okay.20220316_233818.thumb.jpg.88eb48ae9f75a68d3998519344dfdf46.jpg

Moving forward with the mast project.

The trestle is almost finished, the fit almost perfect.

Getting the cheeks parallel with the longitudinal line of the ship was tricky but I got the first two in place.

The trestle is just dry-fitted.

I went back to the material board and didn't like the outcome of the masts.

The material was way too soft and started to warp very quickly, a trip to Home Depot for other items and I found oak dowels.

This has so far proven to be much better and holding up to the shaping.

I used "sanding sponge" 80 grit for the second mast, which was easier to work with.472564320_mastandsandsponge.jpg.dabcebbd652b6d994c7969fe3ddd8d8f.jpg

I did a small purchase of various Winsor & Newton promarker.

I painted one dead eye ( Chucks) with 0523 Coffee stain.

That will second from left, the other eyes are chucks but has been exposed to workshop weather for three years.

Don't know if I should stay with the old ones or cover them as the other eyes will be attached.

Been working behind the scenes as both spreaders are almost done.

I used the old regular solder I had but the outcome is not to my satisfaction.

Tomorrow there is a small package from Amazon containing Solder-It, which I will try out.

But here is the current solder of "bolt" on irongate.

I've been using Solder-it and have been pleased with the results. I just squirt a small amount out on a piece of scrap and use a solder pic or toothpick to place a tiny amount where needed. Then just a touch of the soldering iron and done.

Current build: NRG Half Hull

Previous build: MS Bluenose

That's my intention, looking forward trying out. Thanks

The stuff does have a shelf life though. About 3 months at room temp I believe, longer if refrigerated. I got some very small glass bottles from Amazon and just squirt the whole tube into one, keeping it tightly capped and stored in a cool place out of the sun.

A good way to clean up solder joints and remove excess solder is to use a wire brush in a motor tool. Steel brushes remove solder quickly. Brass wire brushes work a little slower, but you have to be careful or you may remove too much. The parts come out polished nicely.
