The wife was really impressed by how neat and clean everything was in New Hampshire, besides just the beautiful scenery. She came back a huge fan of fish chowder.

I planned to do the 1:200 USS Hornet next, but have not yet acquired all the details pieces I want for it. The hangar area deserves a lot of love on that model, and lights, too. 

There's a lot that remains to be done before Mikasa is finished. Lots of small, fiddly pieces and parts. Particularly on the hull. All kinds of torpedo net rigging, booms, walkways, and the nets themselves. More guns, and lots of boats.

I'm a clam chowder man myself    we went to the seafood festival this year and the admiral was amazed that I didn't eat any    I hung around the fried clam hut 👍

Almost finished with the mast construction now and will get them painted up before the weekend's over (hopefully). Just dry fitting here for fit before painting.

Top 2/3 of the masts will be a radome tan color as is seen on the foremast now, and the bottom 1/3 black/gray.

Cool! Hope you'll do a log of that one too when the time comes. I've managed to collect several of the big 1/200 kits but not that one.

She is looking VERY nice!

 

It is interesting though that it is getting a little harder to tell if she is coming or going in some of the pictures. That stern pilot house and docking wings look almost the same as the forward set!

I only wish I had been able to find more/better reference material for Mikasa.

My hobby shop owner/friend tells me that a local author wrote a reference book on Mikasa, and was published by Osprey, but I was unable to source a copy of it. Additionally, there is another reference written on Mikasa whose name I cannot recall, but again, was unable to locate one for my reference.

I also find myself staring/looking carefully at the instructions for the very same reason you mention. Fore and aft are nearly identical in appearance.

I love Sushi  - but I get them to cook it through propper first,  and coat it in breadcrumbs.

Lol - My wife sure does not want raw sushi, but both of us love it. I don't care whether it's cooked or raw, but her's must be cooked.

 

At home, I cook fish/seafood at least twice a week. Sometimes more. Both of us love it because it's good and good for you, too.

She's a hard one to get good info for. I thought it would be easy since the ship is still around and even has Google street view pics onboard available online... but then I found out most of museum ship was rebuilt after the war with the superstructure/masts of another ship.  Only the hull itself is the actual Mikasa. 

 

Maybe look into info for other pre-dreadnought British warships for ideas?

Possibly some research could be gained by using information about the Formidable class of British pre-dreadnoughts that she was designed after.

I like the Brit fish & chips, especially in the paper cones. Where do the peas come in?

 

There are a lot of interesting pre-dreads. The French ones, especially. Unfortunately, they are mostly done in resin. And not cheap.

I like the really crispy fish and it must have malt vinegar on it, too. I don't know what it is about that paper cone, but somehow, the fish served in paper cones tastes so much better. Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips used to be served in a paper cone.

This is ONE of the reasons I no longer participate on this site.  This inane nonsense is reaching pandemic levels where no post, thread or Build Log is safe.  MSW has become fraught with danger where a single off-topic comment anywhere on the site runs the risk of becoming page after page of similar, past, present or future experiences, anecdotes and “amusing” quips.  What’s wrong with you guys?  I can only assume you have no ‘real’ friends/family/colleagues to spout this crap to that you need to do it here!  Try getting out and meeting people and do this over a coffee or beverage of your choice.

My only regret of this post is that I broke my self-imposed ban to leave this site well alone and it was made in Craig’s build log and for that I apologise.

 Craig, I have been following your build from off stage as I am sure you remember I have the Merit International version of this in my stash and must say I am very impressed with how it’s turning out.  Great work.

Thanks Slog. I suppose there may very well be too much levity at times, and it that causes consternation for some. Will temper my future posts with that thought in mind.

Just testing here to see how high up I want to take the black/gray paint at the bottom of the masts. I think I prefer the mask at the higher level seen on the rear mast. Will adjust the front mast accordingly.

I don't know if you are working from a historical source or not on the black boots for the masts, but wouldn't it make sense to carry the black up to the first platform on the masts? I am not so certain about the forward mast but I think the reason for the black was to hide the soot blackening from the funnels.

 

In fact it looks like the middle of the masts are painted in this picture.

I have that photo. But if you look closely, those masts are very different than the ones supplied in my Pontos kit, the kit  ones likely a later mast variation. So I hear what you're saying, but the picture doesn't match what I've got. Historical accuracy is sort of out the window. I'm just trying to get it to look like I want it to look.

I agree, the masts on your kit don't seem to really match any of the available pictures, both past and present. It does seem though that she carried several mast configurations over the years. If you added the gun tubs on the lower portion of the masts you would come close to many of the pictures though. Either way she is really looking good.

What a great build this is turning in to. All that PE you plastic builders really sets the bar high.

Several pages back you built up the underside of the bridge, will any of that be visible without a mirror? Not that it matters, you know its there.
