Hi Nils. Interesting model and a good start. Some of the frames are quite thinly cut, what did you use to cut them?

The agent of Algier Harbor Carpenter Services has just delivered a bunch of 1/2 dozen oars for the ships boat. He is still a bit pale and tired from working on them all week, but for sun protection he is wearing his new tricorn hat made from 0,3 mm brass sheet

Nils, in the past I always used a hand held jig saw but I recently bought a scroll saw. I'm sort of hoping it makes cutting out frames easier.

yes you`re right, agree,  the scroll saw makes life easier indeed, which would be worth the investment...

on this model I`ll be doing things I dd`nt try before...., so for the planking I odered size 1,5 x 6 mm planks in "red cedar" wood, trust that will provide a nice warm mediteranian tone, hoping it will not be too brittle when shaping...

Hi Antony,

 

by now non of the frames are glued to the keel yet. Its only stuck in place and positioned by the fixture. Will have to cut out all the notches for rails and stringers first (frame by frame) before glueing them down to the keel permanently, and make card templates for the decks, so these decks can be cut out of 0,8 mm thick ply. Those decks will then be planked with 3 mm wide pine strips, caulking, etc.... I`m wandering if it will be possible to slip the floor into the cargo hold in (in parts), without removing some of the deckbeams of the main deck. I did this on my Pegasus build, so it should work generally. Besides that the model will be 25% larger, this early framework is not dealed with in the original Amati plan. Thats why the preperation and planing will take a bit longer for the involved sequences...

today framework removed from positioning jig, started fastening some of the stringers, quite fragile construction in the moment no fractures so far...

Am thinking of leaving a part of the port side hull open for a look beneath the deck...., beneath the wales

I`m quite pleased with the way the holding and positioning fixture worked out, and the meanwhile arrived red-cedar planks look great for color and grain.....

 

Im the moment I`m involved in repairing our wooden equipment shed in the garden. It needs new roof parts and all gutters and rain drainpipes. As always, the more old wood I remove for replacement, the more rotten surprizes become visable. But I think I have the right concept now. I`ve been at it 3 days now and guess it will take the weekend as well to get things managed and the repair done.

Update...

 

put some more stringers on, mounted the fancy support brackets for the high poop-deck grating, and am shaping the card template halves for making the cargo hold floor. I think I need`nt remove the deck beams for doing so, the card templates and later the thin planked ply floor halves can easily be slipped in through the frames from above....

I also liked the shape and lines of these chebec hulls very much, and I find the enlarged Amati hull was a nice one to base and modify the design on...

the rather thin deckbeams will be supported (strength) from below with turned wooden pillars. This way I have the option to place 35 mm high figures standing upright, crates, barrels, etc., below the deck. Now I will have to deal with the positioning and anchoring of the two M4 stand spindles below the cargo hold floor, and cut the two half hold floor parts from 0,8 mm ply and plank them. The port side of the outer hull shall remain partially open, in order to give view into the ship...

cutting out the floor halves from 0,8 mm ply for the cargo hold bottom (still to be planked...), and attatching the brass M4 thread-plates under the floor for the stand`s two spindles..., also checking out the deck-supporting pillars midships...

am pleased you like the spindle fastening points....

 

the stb. floor half is now permanently planked and mounted. The pine-planks are 3 x 100 mm long and 0,7 mm thick. The three square  outcuts take up the gratings to the bilge. The overstanding outside edges of the floor will be trimmed off when the hull gets faired for planking...
