If there is one thing sure about the rigging of a ship, than it is that the ropes have to be belayed somewhere. In the case of your model I don't exactly know what the authors of the drawings had in mind, but as far as I am concerned you are free to mount pinrails in the sides anywhere you need them. If I am honest I must say that I have serious doubts about the pins in the railings athwarthships you placed your circle around. They seem very unlikely to me, but pardon me if I say something very rude here. It seems one has to be careful on this forum about saying things which might hold some criticism...

Well-meaning criticism is appropriate, from a person with your experience, Ab is beneficial.:imNotWorthy:
I know from the beginning that the plan of this ship is not good, the authors drew from more sources.
The pins in the side railing of Dutch ships can be seen in the pictures, I found a debate on the Czech forum and there the most detailed picture of a Dutch warship - EENDRACHT from 1655 by van de Velde, he has pins in the railing.

VEL-EEND-1668_.thumb.jpg.27ff4a2b4046a6dc979e358ccd92dfa6.jpg

Another warship..

VEL-BAT-1672_.thumb.jpg.ad5b5183700c8567f3f2809bdc30f922.jpg

So the small possibility of placing them on warships was possible !?

The Dutch double deck according to the model in the book Der Hollandische Zweidecker von 1660-1670 by Heinrich Winter also has pins in the railing, here this model by Alexander Bielov..

117579750_pholandsk2d..jpg.471618aa075caef8fb98f611bc5341f4.jpg

I build the model as competitive, here the main consideration is the agreement with the plan, every change must be documented. So I'm looking for historical data..:default_wallbash:B)

As far as I have found, there are no belaying pins on ships from your period. Not on racks  or in the railing.

Van de Velde (Peter) was born in 1654. Suppose he only started painting ships when he was about 20 years old, then we are in 1674.
Perhaps he took ships from this period as an example.

It may be that this arrangement is correct in the second half of the 17th century (dont now), but certainly not at the end of the 16th century.

If you build exactly according to your plan (competition) then this explanation is only informative. Then you just have to follow the plan.

And you succeed very well in this Ondras.

Anyone who has ever attempted to untie a knot in a wet rope under load will appreciate the brilliance of the belaying pin.  This simple invention allows the hitch securing the line to be released while the rest of the line remains under tension.

The belaying pin pin also solves the problem of securing the bight of the line.  Tying knots usually requires the end.

So, how did seamen secure lines prior to the invention of the belaying pin.  I realize that ancient ships had stag horns for this purpose., but it would seem that space would not permit the dozens of these required to secure the lines leading to the deck for a complicated rig.

Thoughts?

Thank you for your input and thoughts. Building models according to plan or their historical accuracy is a dilemma that every builder must face. Fortunately, nowadays there are already enough quality plans.

I waxed the railing, covered the part where there would be other equipment..

Thank you for like!:imNotWorthy:

Channels. I had to measure their width so that the ropes would not rub against the railing, because what is painted in the plan does not agree.

Thank you very much Silverman. Thanks for the like! :imNotWorthy:😇

I have been thinking for a long time about finishing the connection of the front stem according to Witsen..

Replica of Barents' ship..

So I added it. The cuts were made with a 0.15 mm thick razor saw, and 0.09 mm black paper was placed..

Ondras, you are moving at a fast and furious clip, without any sacrifice in quality.  I love all the detail - particularly the scarfing of the stem - NICE!  Thank you for bringing to my attention this Barent’s ship replica project.  I will look that up - looks fascinating.

I’m not sure what to say about the pinrail issue on early 17th century vessels, other than perhaps Vasa is your best guide.  When in doubt, personally, I like to fall back on the Van de Veldes for the clarity of their drawings.

We are all works in progress, all of the time.
