HMS Triton Cross Section by Derek C - FINISHED

Recommended Posts

Hello Fellow MSW Members

I am going to attempt the Cross Section for my next build , this will be my third wooden boat model .So with that being said , don’t expect a master piece as I am a true novice. It took me a week at least to try and figure out what wood and how much  to purchase :default_wallbash:. I am sure I probably purchased more than needed but I figure what I don’t use on this build ,  I will someday on another I’m sure and to be honest some of what I ordered I didn’t plan on ordering but once I got on the site and started ordering, I couldn’t help it.

Here is what I ordered:F954BB37-CD12-4D57-B878-3D45D893437E.thumb.jpeg.18bbfcb83ccc5923f1a078821a3c3f1f.jpeg

while I  wait for my wood to arrive I have some teak and figured I’d play around and try my hand at building a cannon as I have never done one before .

First I used a flashlight to trace the parts for the cannon, because I only printed on set and ran out of ink (well at least that’s what it’s telling me ,but seems like I just replaced the darn thing ) and didn’t feel like running to the store and I couldn’t talk the admiral into going.

i placed the print  down on the lens of the flashlight and put a piece of  card stock over it and used a colored pencil to trace the plan, I use a color pencil to be able to see that I didn’t miss anything. With black ink or pencil the image and pencil lines make it hard to see.

i then used exacto knife to cut out template.

using a a small amount of glue I glued the templates to a piece of teak I had already previously prepared to the proper thickness.

Using the scroll saw I cut out the templates in a general shape.B205F66B-B985-4BAD-AC89-369A55C4A64F.thumb.jpeg.5825430eec73e94c1ae37ff0ba7f0539.jpeg

I then used files, sanding blocks, and sticks to finish

Then I cut out some bits to make the front and rear axle spindals

that’s where I’m at for the day .I will continue to work on the cannons while I patiently wait for my wood order .

I hope y’all will follow along on this adventure and help me out along the way :pirate41:

Thanks

Derek

Great to see you starting this build and happy to have a front row seat. I have all my frames glued up and cut out on mine but it's been sitting a while. I'll pick it back up once the longboat is done.

I looks like a good plan, Dereck.  And the cannon carriages look spot on.

Nice to see some activity in the cross section department!

I'm also planning on doing this build, so are watching your progress with interest.

Have fun!

Messed around with some card stock paper and built a barrel for the cannon not sure I’m happy with it . Maybe after the wheels are done it will look better if not I will try again .4CA0ADAC-C89D-46CA-920B-2F3392226298.thumb.jpeg.5775ecdd579f67c0be2185504705e695.jpegACCA74DE-AD25-46DE-860A-2C1F6EA3EB82.thumb.jpeg.a26c852f38b88adf29f650a1c698907f.jpeg1E5766E5-2D55-495F-9644-A7FB6F540B9B.thumb.jpeg.9f178764c942d5f6042f51ccb27885dd.jpeg

Only a few more days until my wood order arrives and I can start building frames, but for now I started making the  second cannon carriage today using the same technique except I printed a copy of the plan to cut out and use as a template this time . F391BBBF-BA1E-479E-B7B4-1C0B9E04CE33.thumb.jpeg.26433d5ab2415b685864bc4ce4a74114.jpeg

Clamping the two pieces together to ensure the pieces wouldl be identical as I filed and sanded to match the template.

I also added wheels to the first cannon they are not complete yet but just trying to decide on the overall look .

guess it looks ok what do the masses think 🤔

I finished one of the cannons I think the barrel looks ok , I will leave it alone and once I place it in its port I will make my final decision unless I hear otherwise from my fellow members

Derek,

I think it looks pretty good from here.  If you have some scrap wood, mock up a deck section with a gunport and put into position.   BTW, if you do the mock up, it makes a great jig for working on the gun rigging.

Sorry Derek.... no idea on the gauge off the top of my head.   Thought there was a set of plans for the guns and carriages.  It might be on the plan?

Here's a thought... go to the very end of this section and find the logs for UWEK  and Scottacus.  As I recall, they were pretty compete and detailed and for a long time UWEK's was the reference.

Today I did the keelson and false keel . The keel is made of red oak the false keel is blood wood, and the keelson is cherry.32E0145A-2EA6-49A6-B2B1-7D65DC8D58D3.thumb.jpeg.7ef9d11d7ed08b4cb71844d1a1c97995.jpeg

Nice progress so far. For a flat glueing surface I went to Lowes and picked up a 12" × 12" black marble tile. It's dead flat and less fragile than glass.
