King of the Mississippi by john46 - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - scale 1:80

Recommended Posts

Planking of 3rd deck finished. As it is the same as the 2nd deck I didnot expect to encouter problems, however pride comes before a fall which caused me to redo part of the planking.

John

Looks nice again John.

Wich part have you redo?

You know, when I see the pattern of the planking, it looks like a jigsaw puzzle…...

Thanks Sjors,

Started at the rearside (at the left of the picture) and arriving at the point where the pattern should join again, it didnot fit close due to tapering. So had to redo the sections in red to finish the planking properly.

John

The parts to form the 3rd deck stateroom and floor. Of course, the doors and windows do not fit. Have planked the stateroom floor, leaving unplanked in the mid. On second thought a wrong saving of would since it could be that the floor can be seen through the door windows, so have to complete the planking as yet.

John

Thanks Adrieke,

Yep, noted, the front has two doors before the slot. The poopdeck has more room than the foredeck. Thanks.

The rubbing fender fitted to the 3rd deck and glued this deck to the hull. To hold pressure have taken some cargo on board. According to the bill of lading it is just fresh bubble water.

Hi Adrieke,

Indeed will be fun to place the railings, however after consideration it looks more convenient to do the railings as last part of the build and do the 3rd deck state-room, wheelhouse, deckfourniture and masts first.

By the way, how is your father doing ?

John

Sjors,

Bought special beer for this purpose, do not know what happened, but the beer did not reach its destiny

Looking at the King noted that the 2nd and 3rd deck not perfectly fit to the top of the boiler/machine rooms and state-room. Used some putty to get a better look.

John

Thanks Sjors, I knew something was wrong, but could not find out what. . .

In the meantime have fitted the windows and door to the curved walls of the state-room. There are neither window nor door frames which I donot like. So used mahogany 0.6 mm to create a kind of frame.

John

Nice progress John.

That kind of putty is nice to work with, but if you want to oil or varnish a ship you will see some colourdifferences.

Cheers,

Thanks for your kind words and advice Wim. Will use this putty only at places hard to see like I have done now. (normally speaking one does not look up from the bottom, it is just that I want to have it tight fitted).

Hi Garward,

The grid is created by carving the acetaat, painted black and wiped off the black paint so it remains in the carves only. Take a look on the first page of my built log, there are some pictures how it is created for the doors of the machine room. Using mm paper to keep the carves in line. Now using a cotton swab instead of a brush which works more cleaner.

Best regards,

John

Great build log John, you've given me some ideas for a better treatment of windows & doors on my mini-Mamoli sternwheeler. It isn't large enough to go the full cutout route, but I think I might print some windows & doors and back onto wood - has to be better looking than what came in the kit! Rebecca
