Finished the 3rd deck state-room. The ceiling is missing in the kit and am still waiting for completion by the hobby shop, however they have no response from Artesania sofar. Looks like I have to scratch built that part. Should not be too hard to do.

John

My oh my, I am so happy with todays software. To scratch built the missing ceiling have scanned in the print with the lasercuts, scaled part 114 (the ceiling) to the right size. Printed out and glued to a piece of plywood, saw the shape and it fits.

John

Hi John,

Plans of AL are good, service is bad, that's my opinion. I had some missing parts too and after more than 4 years still waiting.

You've made an excellent 3rd deck, now you can go on with the build.

Cheers,
Wim

Yes, of course, it is a known historic fact, and also that Peter worked for shipyards as the simple carpenter. He also was a modeller, as well as we, the model of the ship made by it with own hand is stored in Moscow  :) .

Thanks for the reply, I thought as much, I finished the Robert E. Lee nye on 35 years ago. It was also a "Plank of frame".

I'll always have a spot in my heart for the queens of the river. I grew up reading stories of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn on the banks of the Mississippi in St. Paul, Minnesota. Every once in a while one would come all the way up to St. Paul. Couldn't go further because the locks were too narrow at Minneapolis for the old girls.

Thanks Adrieke, yep the wheelhouse is next. Will plank the innerside of the wheelhous as well, since the walls are clearly seen through the windows.

Bill, never been in the Mississippi area, but for one reason or the other sometimes I imagine I can smell the atmosphere of the bayous and see Huck fishing in the river, hear Randy Newman, dr John and all the blues bands of New Orleans.

John

Hi John -- My King is on order and should arrive next week-- a birthday present to myself (65 and still going strong!). I'm looking forward to getting underway with the help or your and Adrieke's builds here.

Current build:     AL King of the Mississippi

Previous builds:  Midwest Skipjack

Hi Barth, wish you a lot of fun with your build.

Due to the fact that the comments of the earlier stage of my log was lost following the crash of MSW 1, I intended to make a list of deficiencies / defects / modifications at the end of my built, to clarify the pictures. Maybe you find it helpful if I publish them now. If incorrect/incomplete I am sure Adrieke will comment on it. So here we go:

1. Walnut veneers, there should be 30 of them 0.6x6x60, however the kit supplied 30 pieces 0.6x5x60, so there is a shortage of about 10 veneers.

2. Slots of the boilerroom differs 3 mm with the walls. Adrieke adjusted the slots, I extended the walls. Both ways are suitable.

3. Door frames of the machineroom are on the parts list Sapelli 1x3x25, this has to be 1x4x25 and for the boilerroom lintels1x4x35

4. The piece of wood to construct the wave catcher should be Sapelli 1.5x5, supplied in the kit is 2x5. Both Adrieke and me didnot succeed to bend this in the right shape. The wood simply breaks. Adrieke used baswood and stainted it, I bought Sapelli 1.5x5, spilled a lot but succeeded at last.

5. Doors of the boiler room: I was not able to create them swinging. Used for the door frames (nbrs 49 and 50) walnut 0.6 mm and as pin to the hinges brass wire 0.3 mm instead of the nails 0.8 mm. As far as I know, Adrieke made them as specified.

6. Stable bars/box closing bars according to the parts list 1.5x5x85, which is out of proportion. This should be 1.5x3x90, the bar supports should be 3.5x5x8.

7. Second deck stateroom, doors are too tall and windows too small to fit in the walls. You can see in our build logs how we dealt with this.

8. Placed the second deck stack gratings in frames of mahogany/sapelli 2x3

As from this point the modifications/observations/comments can be found in the build logs as usual.

Regards,

John

The most important lesson I learned is not to believe the instructions before having carefully checked whether they are correct.

Thanks for the pointers, John. I've built several Model Shipways boats but haven't tackled one of the 'foreign' kits until now. I know what you mean about being wary of the instructions and some of the supplied parts, but so far I've always figured out a way around types of problems. I guess it's part of the challenge (fun?) of this hobby.

Correct Barth, if all suits perfect there is a lot of challenge lost. I was not aware you are a skilled modeler.  My remarks are intended to be of help to beginners, since as said the first comments got lost on the crash of MSW 1.

Have fun,

John

Thanks, John. I certainly don't consider myself a skilled modeler, though. I become a new beginner every time I start up one of these builds. There's always more to learn and some new problem to figure out.
