Worming and parceling are a lot of extra work, and some say not worth the trouble.  To my mind parceling is overkill as it probably adds too much thickness to the line, especially given that whatever material you use to parcel with is going to be completely out of scale.  However, worming gives a nice smooth appearance to the finished service.  If the line is served without worming you end up still seeing the lay of the rope.

 

On the other hand, I have read that not all servicing was done with worming.  Some sailors believed that the worming trapped moisture against the line and promoted rot.

 

It really is up to you, and whatever you do will just enhance the already beautiful work of art you have done.

Today, I finished the first shroud, made the eye and added it to the stbd. foremast. Was real busy with the business today, so didn't get much done, but at least a little progress. The Lanyards are taught, but not finished, just tightened up for spacing. Now for Port.

That looks great John....Now to address the worming discussion. the standing rigging on the Morgan is wire rope. the last time it was wormed parceled and served was in the early 1980's... when we stripped off the old down to the wire and after we wire brushed it to clean we inspected it and found that it was in great condition. no corrosion. we did replace about 5% of the standing rigging only because of kinks and some corrosion but other than that it was re worm parcel and serve. If it is done right then the rigging is waterproof. the thing with parceling is when you do the eyes on the standing rigging you "shingle the parceling so that it is pointing towards the deck in this way it acts like shingles on a roof. also after worming you apply a liberal amount of pine tar before parceling. after the parceling is put on another coating or pine tar. then the service. after serving you apply a coat of black tar which is pine tar and shellack which becomes semi hard thus completing the water proofing of the standing rigging. John has a lot of pictures that I sent to him showing all this if you want Henrey I will send you the pictures also so you can see the process first hand. I really documented everything that i did... hope this helps. of course there is a lot of discussion about this but it seems that this works the best after all the standing rigging has been on the Morgan for decades out in the elements and was found to be in good order....also have videos of this too...

I've been continuing with making shrouds and deadeyes so far, hope to get more today as time permits. Got Port side first shroud on and tightened things up now on to the rest for the foremast.

 

By the way, I ordered blocks and some line from Chuck. I now understand the fuss everyone has been making about his products. I have replaced all of the blocks that came with the kit with Chuck's....outstanding. I really didn't understand just how much of an improvement could be made by replacing the lines with Chuck's until I physically could see them. As funds permit I intend to completely replace the lines that came with the kit and only use Chuck's. Well worth the investment guys. I'm going to be posting all of these on my website shortly as well as letting my followers and customers know how to contact Chuck to purchase their own.

Thanks for all the likes and kudos guys. Next up was to complete the 5th deadeye and shroud, which is a single line with a spliced loop to go over the mast and down to the port side to complete the shrouds for the Foremast. Then the Forestay was made and attached over the top of the shroud loops and down to the Bowsprit and then siezed in 2 places one at the top and one at the bottom. It is attached at the top using 2 Bullseyes and lashed using a Lanyard. The flexibility of the serving machine really came in handy making the splice and then serving it into the line. Would really be hard to do this without it, and it has many adjustments.

Hi George, thanks for comments. Yeah, Alexey's tools are really innovative. I think the server sells for around $95 including shipping. It comes from Belarus and takes about 3 weeks to get. Not much done today, had things to do other than ship work. I cleaned up the lines, tightened the Lanyards properly and tied off the ends. The Lower Foremast is now finished. Time to move on to the Mainmast Shrouds.
