Corsair by DCIronfist - FINISHED - OcCre - 1:80 scale (First wooden ship build)

Recommended Posts

Augie,

When I tell everything on forehand, I think David will change it before he get that problem….

It's good for his building skills when he found it out by himself  :D

But on the other hand….he can also read the log and find out  :D

Yes I could read the log as you say except it went down in the great crash of 012....I can look at the pictures though lol no biggie with help I will get there :) :) :)

Sorry David…….

You are right "snik"

But now you know what kind od things you came up with.

And of course…..you can ask me  :D

I think you are on the right track and it's gonna be a beauty when she is finished!

Hi David,

I have a secret for that and I don't tell you how I edit the pictures  :D

The foredeck….I just placed it and then start planking it.

Then you can put the planks nicely against the bulwark and you don't see any gap.

It's a little bit more work but then it looks great!

Good luck with it.

Don't force anything David, no good will come of it. :(  :(

You could try to steam it and then use elastic bands to pull the bullworks in, that way it's a slow pressure that does the job. ;)

Failing that you could always put an extra lining in. :)

What ever you decide mate good luck.

Patience.... patience ...patience..... building is so much about fitting. You'll better understand that after planking, So basically - fit and file, refit and sand and keep repeating until it's where you want.

I agree with Sjors on waiting to plank until after. This may have helped on the bulwarks also as IIRC you inner planked before fitting them, which made them thicker. I've found that saving time in one place usually cost it somewhere else, such as with pre-planking decks. That is of course build dependent, as differing vessels are shaped and constructed different and make doing certain things in a certain order a must. I inner planked bulwarks after gluing and it was a pain also, but Know Pain, Know Gain. If this were easy everyone would be doing it.

For example, I think I've seen someone plank the deck of the Swift before gluing but cant remember who, it may have been pre-crash, anyway the deck hasa compound curvature and honestly I don't think I'd have gotten mine down if it was thicker. On a flat deck this wouldn't be as much of an issue.

Now after all the constructive crappola, she's looking Sweet. That break will never show and that gap at the stem, Well look at the gaps between bulkheads and see how nicely they cover up with planking, no one but us will know its there once planked. She's looking Really Good.

Oh one other bit of constructive blah blah.... on the front Balsa shaping. I used rasps which work beautifully to quickly shape the balsa, before sanding. Plus a small plane (I really like the brass and walnut 3 plane set from harbour freight for 9.99) will be really handy in planking for narrowing planks. That is if your don't already have one.

Howdy David!

Also late to the party (as is usual for me, keeping up with posts is rough at work - they frown on that sort of thing here,  but I try not to let that stop me too much).

Looks like you have come quite a ways and quite well done!  The fix looks great, your decking and hull look great!

Trust me, I am a newbie to this as well and I totally understand the nervousness - one thing I have learned (many many many times) as others have said - it is wood. Anything can be fixed!   And you handled it like a champ!

NICELY done!!

Will sit back here behind Sjors, Augie and crew and observe - they know what they are talking about, I still soak up information as much as possible.

Ho, hum.  Another life threatening catastrophe goes by the boards.

:D  :D  :D   Just kidding.  Nice job.  Almost anything with wood can be fixed or redone.  And we always learn a lesson from our problems.

Sanding is cathartic, no thinking involved, and you can use the repetitive motion to help clear your thoughts and let your mind find peace :D
