Santisima Trinidad by md1400cs – FINISHED - OcCre - 1/90 - cross-section - bashed

Recommended Posts

Hi Mates,

Denis, Frank, E,J,  thanks - glad that you might use this idea.

Patrick, as always thanks as well

Some updated work in the same area as before. Finished up the mast cheeks or are they bibs?? See lower pics. That said, should those long mast cheeks? that are wrapped in ropes ALSO have some nails pounded through into the mast?? I spent a lot of time looking through my books, and at “Google University” looking through many photos – found nothing helpful.   The only hint was the Boudroit Book (see pic)– it offered a slight hint at a yes.

I don’t have his book 1 (hull construction)– that one certainly details mast construction as well. I have not seen nails in any of the brilliant Russian museum quality models that I have looked at. Hmmmm?

Any suggestions are appreciated. I just don’t have enough knowledge to decide nails or no nails. L

PS2: I know that historically this area should be painted black –

Regards

Hi Michael,

For what i've seen in some builds, colors are black and red

You can reference the picture below from a spanish model maker, I think the color scheme looks very nice

Federicoaa Thanks for the photo.

Ferit, Martyn as always big thanks. And mates thanks for the likes

I had thought about painting her as she was in 1805 at the battle of Trafalgar – decided not to - But did copper the hull. as a first time experiment for me.

As you know she did not do well in that battle. Captured towed and then scuttled. In 2009 the Spanish Navy thought that they had found her but results proved inconclusive.

There is a replica Santísima in the harbor of Alicante, Spain. No plans were left for the original so this replica  not quite “right”. It (the replica) was constructed from

the shell of a metal ship; hull planks were added and so on. It was a restaurant, night-club and who knows what else. It certainly is NOT the Vasa or the HMS Victory. haha

I had several photos available as well. Painting her was tempting ! She looks very first rate with the added red, black, yellow paint details

Cheers,

Had second thoughts when I started looking at the main yard measurements for the lathe. The two pulleys I rigged to those two served lines are too small IMO

I like the double/triple combination with the larger bits. Using that drawing (foremast) as a general guide.

PS; I find it very surprising that the lower main yard is not attached using parrels (per Ocree instructions) -- I think that I will add them to that yard right or wrong?

The topmast yard does indicate using a parrel per Occre.

Hi Mates,

Done with this section - A few updated pics (apologies regarding photo 8 - but you get the idea -

PS: Not sure about Burton pendants for this ship. Too late in any case.

Thanks Frank,

and thanks for the likes!

Hammer needed a "little something" bit of stain and a metal face. I read somewhere that fids were also, at so point, made of iron, so as not to wear out as easily - might just add black painted

wood bits on each side for sids. Not sure if that would apply to this ship however?

As most of us always say "close-up pictures are not good for our egos" haha

Denis, Ricky thanks for the nice thoughts,

Here are some updated areas of work. Will put all of this away for now (nothing is connected together and some details still need to be worked on)

Will now focus on the four needed yards. Sails have been made (not using the kit provided ones) will put all of those bits together. I think that I need to place

an order with Chuck for more blocks and ropes.

PS: Ricky - yes  your Wisdom signature is universally true

Hi Mates,

Doing an “in-between” bit right now. Since all of the masts are done, and now working on the lower main yard, I have exact dimensions needed to start the case; just needed to add the base.

Decided to use the kit provided parts just added a bit to the front face.

The case will have a minimalist look. It will be wall mounted (not on a second wall stand, just with a painting type hook behind its backside {case will be flush against the wall – will add a slight lip to wood side frames to absorb the hook}).

The front, and sides will be Plexiglas (maybe the top as well). The rear interior face will be covered in very light sand colored cloth similar to a sail. The inner space will be very close to completed kit dimensions. The on/off light switch and battery will be, invisible, under bottom of the case – easy access.

The same woodworking shop that made the base for the Vasa will build this for me as well. This will be much more involved however.

Now need to draw ideas for the case framing. AND live back and forth with mental changes before the shop starts to cut wood (thinking of pear – nice sandy color)

As always thanks so much for your thoughts and likes.

I’ve always been impressed with builders that also work with metal and solder. Way beyond my skill set. But, now I need to get more skilled.

---------------------------------------

Completed shaping the lower main yard, also knowing that for the first time I would also need to add Stuns’l Boom irons.  Thought that I would use the 2 kit bits, but then decided that “scale look” was an issue (for me). This dilemma also created an opportunity to attempt to learn new skills.  Making the rings was, of course, super simple.

Two possibilities just drill two holes through the small rings, add a rod, CA the three bits then paint black – or solder the three parts together then blacken the copper in a solution. My concern is that once I solder a rod to one ring then try to solder the second ring – the re-heat will disconnect the first two parts haha

Or – brain just woke up - drill two holes through rings insert rod through each hole (at once) that go deeper through each ring, then solder both together – later cut the inside rod protrusions, dip in blackening solution – though I don’t think that the solder will turn black?

Need to spend some time here ---  hmmmm! In any case the sails are done, but boom metal bits need to be fitted first. Also need to probably purchase a hobby torch or soldering gun, then determine what type of solder to use. Mates any help here would be greatly appreciated. I will also look at help sections here at MSW.

Cheers,

I know if you use Stay Brite solder it will blacken in the blackening solution. There was a resent discussion on MSW on blackening techniques especially after soldering.

Frank,

Thanks indeed. We all learn from each other - Glad that some of my ideas are useful for you as well. My work would not be as "good" or as evolved today - had it not been for all that I have learned from and adapted following other builder's logs, yours included.  Also all of the very kind advice that members have posted in my logs have been super helpful. Still learning and experimenting a lot -  also part of the fun --- figuring out solutions that are "out of the box".

Cheers,

Hi mates,

Finishing up the other two masts as well as attaching the yard hailing ropes; decided to somewhat divert away from the Occre specific rigging instructions -- including adding double fiddle blocks at each end of the yards + other changes. For example Occre’s instructions for attaching parts of the sails to yards – just below sails - are not correct IMO. Other issues as well.

Re-worked the stunt boom yard structural support to “fit” the look that I wanted. That copper tape was much too thin. Instead used thicker model car pin striping tape then banded the supports with same type of tape. Will probably add two small nails to each side – to finish off how it would have been secured to the yards.

Made the sails (first pic is Occre included sails) – that said, sails should probably be hemmed with rope as well (though some museum models that I have looked at do not border sails with rope – probably because the rope is wrapped within the hems?). Started to do that (thread the rope) but became too fiddly. In any case sails will be mostly furled – I think? So skipping that detail for all four sails.

General pics. Give you the ideas –Hmmm need to “clean up” underside of that platform some bits are badly finished off.

Thanks for dropping by

Cheers,

EJ,

You are always so kind thanks indeed.

BUT - I can only claim very little with these sails

Yes: I bought the material, steeped the cloth in black tea, cut the paper patterns from kit provided sails, had an "idea" on how they should look  -- that's about it

Then went to the same sewing sewing school that I used for the Vasa sails. There I was totally immersed in my teachers step-by-step instructions

An YES without her complete assistance and that brilliant computer machine - well you know the rest haha

Here are the step-by-steps that I used.

Cheers,

Mighty fine work,Michael!  A quick question - did the parrel beads come in the kit,or did you buy them aftermarket?  I`ve been to the craft stores & haven`t been able to find small light colored wood beads like yours - they are always too big or too dark.  I`ve been using some bronze colored metal ones, but they still look like metal up close.
