Santisima Trinidad by md1400cs – FINISHED - OcCre - 1/90 - cross-section - bashed

Ferit - yes I have also seen how to make barrels visiting a log over at Scratch Ship Model - I may play around with building one barrel

for the main deck attaching it much as you did on your Berlin. Not sure that I can add the spicket as you did on yours - brilliant work.

Patrick - thanks indeed, Though I did intend on "opening it up" as I had seen so well done with other cross sections.

Hi Mates,

Update; decided to leave mid-gun deck as it was - just a hammock and a table, added lanterns and gun door tackle rigging.

The upper gun deck will have fully rigged carriages - towards the stern - as I did for the lower gun deck, but only two. Glad to see that all of the installed lanterns are still working.

Need to still do lots of detailing on outer hull planks along with trimming back bits of wood here and there (on my list)…

Seeing mistakes that I’m not too happy about. Big one, for me, is adding wales without first installing outer hull planks under the wales. I knew better but just did not think it through. Also still learning how to correctly place and pace tree nails at intended (correct) locations on floor planks. Will probably remove and redo the upper deck. It will be fully planked. What I did is not right. Grrrr – fun fun fun

She is looking very nice to me as well!

I also think that you have installed the wales correctly. In all of the cross section drawings I have seen of planking layouts, the wales are the planks for that area and do not sit upon other planks. I am far from an expert on this and would be greatly interested to know if this ship was possibly built different.

Frank, and L.J.,

Thanks for your thoughts - much appreciated. Turns out the wales were correctly attached. Got confused looking at the OcCre instructions (it appears as if the wales were glued above hull planks). See first photo. Then looked for correct info and, yes E.J. you are indeed correct - thanks for posting - Second photo is a good one. Also to improve my vocabulary :D Frank, yes the lights are a nice addition - came out nicer than I expected. thanks for the nice compliment.

============================

Last three photos ARE where I made mistakes. Hard to believe that I did not measure correctly having the OcCre  deck template as a guide. Easy fix. And in any case I was going to remove all the deck planks in order to recut and treenial them more accurately.

All good. Thanks as always for your kind advice.

Cheers,

I can easily understand the confusion on the planking especially when a double planked hull is a common model building practice. It become easy to forget that real ships only have the single layer.

Always nice when a whoops works out for the best. :)

E.J.,

Your comments regarding double planking and laying wales kept me curious.

So went back and gave my Vasa a look. Indeed I nailed the wales above the first layer of planking – then the outer thin planks were applied. In double-planked kits I imagine that this is only visible at the stern (assuming the ship had wales) In any case this is certainly a much more frustration free build method.  Would not have thought of it were it not for your comment. -cheers --

Moving on – now learning how to plank upper deck for ST.

Hi Michael,

Now you have me worried :)

So I went back to see how I did the Wales on my Vasa. Lol!!

I found some photos

First Layer of planking installed

DSC_0060.thumb.jpeg.b534135ef1eb3bbedea5e477574321f4.jpeg

Then I planked the stern section covering the first planking

DSC_0065.thumb.jpeg.f5e04afacb5699f36b8b94694e63d386.jpeg

Then I installed the second planking and the Wales

So I don't see the first planking at all.

DSC_0059.thumb.jpeg.ecb52760d532ce4e249d52116bd24b28.jpeg

With a cross section build as you are doing now, I'm not sure how you would cover up the first planking.

Thanks,

Frank

Denis - thanks - kind of you to catch up as well as the good wishes.

Vivian - SO nice to have you stop by - welcome back - I'll go to your log and catch up.

So - as I have not quite learned "measure twice cut once"haha  - rebuilt the upper deck, learned more about proper plank spacing so all in all a good mistake to learn from.

Hesitant to drill holes for deck treenails - mistakes would be visually a real mess. need to ponder that one. I know that some ships did not have treenailed upper decks - need to go to my books, and Google University ---

Next will be adding two carriages/guns to upper gundeck - adding last set of lanterns, and gun door ropes to underside of upper deck. As always thanks so much for your visits.

Cheers,

Hi Mates,

Another of my small updates; finished the upper deck, installed the two upper gun deck carriages, lanterns, and door tackles. Decided to minimally detail those two carriages, as they will be so out-of-sight.

Note those lantern wires need to be lengthened, and then hidden and spooled behind the side frames. Purchased a spool of the same specific wires from the LED sourced company.

Those 18 wires will also need to run under the (to be made) case so that I can have the on-off switch easily available after ship is incased. Ship will only be visible from the front, and the case will be made so as to hang on a wall.

Also need to add knees and support stanchions to the lower decks – later..

Now onto the upper deck details,,,,

Thanks for the likes and visits.

Nice job on the cross section Michael, it will result in lots of questions from anyone with curiosity. Also your Wasa is one of the better ones I've seen, and in particular I find your painting of all the stern figures to be much more plausible than others I've seen, which lean toward colors that are considerably brighter than any that were likely to have been available at the time.

Frank, Vossiewulf, Denis, Patrick, Vivian - thanks so much for your nice posts much appreciated.

Waiting for some oak planking from Age of Sails so upper hull and inner planks on hold. Kit is a bit "off" in this area - see assembly photos - so working on some other bits in the meantime. Stairs and upper deck grids are almost done.

Hi Mates,

This current bit has caused me some stress. Did not quite know how to approach the idea of also adding the needed openings for boarding the ship (not a detail as part of the kit). But here is a work in progress update. Took several failed attempts to figure out how to proceed - do think that it will work out now :D

PS: having second thoughts about the thickness of the inner bulwark planks - could be too thick hmmm?

Cheers,

Hello Michael,

They do indeed seem quite thick. maybe make them a little narrower at the top.

On the drawing it also looks as if the outside is bending inwards.
This way you go from the "wide" bottom to a "narrower" top.

Hopefully my "Google English" is clear ;)

Patrick,

Thanks for confirming -- I will start this area all over again

I also need waterways - missing from other decks (I knew that but ignored them hmmmm)

At least I had only started top deck one side. haha

Very nice work. I think it would be neat to leave one side open to show all of the framing where it meets the cap rail as well as the gun port framing. Maybe leave the waterway and the cap rail in place but remove the planking in between.

Thanks Frank and EJ,

Decided to try, in fact, leaving one side partially open from both the deck and hull sides - will show framing details for one of the gun frames on the deck - this will be more visible once the ship is completed.

Looking through other builder's logs trying to educate myself on how it should look. The work that I have seen is way above my skill set - but having some positive representative ideas.  EJ thanks for the "push" :imNotWorthy:

Completed the revised look of the side planks glad it's done. Almost done with most of the woodwork - will add carriages and so on. Here are a few updated photos. Need to figure out how to add pin rail to that side hmmm---

This kit precludes any instructions in that regard only two rails in front of and behind the main mast. Of course not correct since the main mast is fully rigged including sails so pins on both sides are needed. (The OcCre instructions for the complete ship - that also includes a cross section as part of the full ship package does, in fact, show pins for the included cross section instructions) Odd that for buyers of just the cross section they ignore that bit. The cross section kit comes with pre-cut sails.

Denis, thanks  appreciated.

Made some minor final adjustments to these bits - now moving on.....will leave side (stairs?) ladders for later. I have seen drawings of this ship that include side skids in just about this area of midsection - need to think about this as well. Might get too busy looking.

Good time for pinrails - need to get lathe out in any case for those missing deck support stanchions.

PS: Missing some of your updates!!!

Regards,
