I think PE is pretty much beyond my ability now

Could have fooled me! Looks like you are doing a fantastic job with the PE to me.

Problem solved then.

If the kit items are better then by all means stick with the kit stuff. No since in degrading the model just to use up the brass!

It it is too small to be handled then it is probably too small to be seen and is little more than a brass blob and if painted over in a more traditional model would be missed all together.

Don't shortchange yourself. You have already enhanced the model considerably with your work, even if you have not used every part available.

Hi all here is the next update,

This sub assy is finished (well as much as I'm prepared to do) I like the unpainted brass standing out against the weathered painted parts, i just wish I had the skills to use all the PE (although to be honest I don't think you would notice the bits I've left out)

Wow!! It really does add a whole other dimension of "life" to a model with that level of detail.

Hi all here is the crane from the kit.

And here it is after the PE

Does anyone know did these cranes have windows in the top (I mean I don't think they stood out on those railings to hoist the ships boats on board) I can't find photos of the cranes details, I would think it would be a fairly simple job to add them if they were there.

Can hardly tell the difference KP ... hard choice to make ... Turned out rather spiffy ...

You really think there were windows ...The cap'n on an open bridge ... to hoist the boats snuggling in a cosy cabin ...

I'm not for sure on the windows but, from looking at the assembly I would guess that they either stood on the bridge (top of the turret) and was probably a control station between the cable spools. It would offer the greatest view position and the most direct position for the controls themselves.

As for the assemble itself.... WOW!! What a difference the PE parts make. Thanks for doing the kit vs. PE comparison. That really highlights the vast improvement in the parts.

chances are,  if the control room isn't part of the crane's main body,  then it's likely operated remotely.    very nice work KP........really like the way it looks  :)

Sorry for those who can't see pics, I can't help I'm afraid I am an internet moron

Here is the next sub assy I'm going to attack

inbgvq.jpg

t0qmq0.jpg

The eduard PE comes with PE Oerlikons but I like the kit ones

2zrkqa0.jpg

One of the reasons is the barrels on the kit parts are round also the PE parts are too thin.

I'm adding some of the PE to the kit Oerlikons to make them more realistic (I could add more PE to it but it's soooooooooooooooooòoo small I've left it off)( of course a lot of modellers would be able to add it but I don't have the skills)

Hi all proof I've not given up on this.

Here is one of the four pom poms on the next part (they just take so long)

dytb4g.jpg

Here are the unfolded magazine casings for the rest of them

2ltsqba.jpg

Here they are folded

15gqs1z.jpg

Now I just have to cut the magazine's themselves and bend them then fit them, oh and then cut out and bend the body's, then cut off the magazine's off the plastic parts, oh then bend the cages for the magazines.

I really don't think I will do PE pompoms again.

I saw somewhere where someone makes resin and PE pompoms for 1/700 scale ships that have 100+ parts, including metal barrels. Whoever undertakes those is either a hero or totally insane, or maybe a masochist.
