I have a few more pieces to make and install so I can paint the framing. Then I will start the gratings themselves. I am going to use the exact same method I used on the Prince de Neufchatel to make the gratings. Old Collingwood Posted November 25, 2019 Share #278 Posted November 25, 2019 Just a suggestion phil - where the beak head comes up and you have it flush with the heads decking, it would be good if you made an extion of the beak head as I understand it was designed so the bowsprit can rest on it. You would need to test dry fit the bowsprit first to get an idea of how much gap there is under neath where the beak head comes through. OC. The knight heads are just dry fitted. I extended the beak head and will paint it when I paint the gratings. I just need to make two fashion pieces that sit on top of the head rails and two double seats of ease and the head will be complete. I’m holding off on making the boomkins until I get further along so I don’t break them. I’m waiting until I get to the masting and sparring stage before I install the boomkins to prevent accidentally ripping them off. I’ll do all netting at the same time because I have to install netting all along the rails. I’m currently finishing the sides, then I’ll start at the front and work my way back on the deck fittings. Maybe, we’ll see. Either way, I’m having a lot of fun working on the Victory. Deciding to scratch build the rest of the model was a good decision. I’ve been having a lot of fun with it. I cut slots in the head gratings to pass the gammoning through. None of the deck fittings are painted or glued down. I still need to shape the funnel and make the end look hollow. I need to make the pin rails. Due to the scale, I am using straight pins for belaying pins again. I still need to make the bellhouse, the skylights, the wheel and the binnacle. I also need to make the ladders and my remaining guns. The fittings are just sitting there, and I still have many more to make, but I’m making good progress and I’m feeling a lot better about this build than I was. The holes in the deck did not make me happy. GrandpaPhil Posted December 1, 2019 Author Share #300 Posted December 1, 2019 I glued down my deck fittings. I painted the bulwarks. I am much happier now. This model is a hybrid. My modeling skills have significantly developed in the two and a half years since I started working on it, so I have many problems to fix, or just live with. There are many areas where I have ripped stuff out and replaced it. The areas such as the stern and the quarter galleries, and the wales, I’m leaving alone. I could make the stern and quarter galleries better than the brass sheet. I will make the wales (which are too narrow) correctly in my next build. However, the amount of damage that I would inflict ripping them out, is not worth it on this model. So, I will leave it as is and move on.
