Quite the picture and obviously a happy time. Congratulations for 45 years. I don't even think I even have a picture that old! Do you still have the plane too?

That stern is possibly the busiest section of deck I have ever seen in any ship, let alone one this small, (In real life) Compared with an American 310' Four stacker it is standing room only. I can't see that it was a happy place in anything but perfect weather! Did they retain the dual role of mine sweeping and depth charges into the war?

The reason I asked was that most ships used in escort duty in WWII ended up with Massive racks of depth charges on the stern and little else. Mine sweeping was not often considered as part of their job and they didn't bother carrying equipment for it. In WWI it was different in that there were so many mines places all over the Atlantic ocean that you almost couldn't get anywhere without running into a mine field that had been planted by one side or another.

It would be interesting to see if pictures taken in the mid war or late war supported this or not.

Have been mixing potions ...

The paint for Gunze stone-red-ish is not available in Tamiya, neither Vallejo, so I'm trying to get it right. Unfortunately I started out with the wrong base colour: Tamiya Hull-red, which is a dark brownish colour (XF-9) - I certainly won't be using that one on Musashi(!!!) - consequently I had to add to much of the other colours. So mixture turned out to be Hull Red, Flat red, Flat Yellow (XF-9, XF-7, XF-3) Don't ask ratios, for I mix by eye, as I add spices to my food ... (Talking of food Lou, that apricot ice cream ... yummy!!)

Yesterday I got the deck with the main bridge structure primed as well as the deck where most of the interesting parts are mounted, like funnels, torpedo tubes, etc. Today, I hope to get the colour further "refined" so I can enrich those two decks and the gun platforms ...

I'm still in doubt of the light grey for the hull and standing structures, as the Tamiya (XF-19) is of a darker shade compared to the Gunze ... decisions, decisions, decisions ... on the other hand, how true are the colours printed on a piece of paper

Hmm, not even thinking about colours yet, playingaround with the binnacles and telegraphs, scratch built a sepahamore and jury rigged a range finder.

I found a new new photo for reference which shows me I need to rebuild the mast mast and add a few bitts on the stern.

I found I'd better get the decks painted before mounting anything else on it. When I look at the forard bridge, I've got myself into trouble painting the structure an' deck. I'll be having a ball getting the verticals painted now the horizontal is done <sigh> should have built it up per "story" Don't make the same mistake mate. It is as good as impossible to mask ...

Need some minor touch ups. I think I prefer this colour over the orange brownish from the drawing, although in reality it differs only slightly

Next: Touch ups, and colouring the stern, and focsle. After that, I'll start to worry what will be added, and what needs to change ... I look anxious the book to be delivered (postal services ... still waitin', like for me co-builder's promise a few posts back ...)

I changed my objective from 18 - 200 mm to a macro 0.3m. Got some more touch ups to do ...

The painting of the forard and rear gun platforms I took from the drawing on page one of this build log, you can see the distinct differences ...

One never gets the proper colour across on a digital image when you want to compare e.g. print with the "real" thing

looking really good carl.....nice paint work  :)   is there still a gap across the fore deck seam?   haven't got the kit yet,  although the admiral told me that she ordered the PE kit.   I'm sure some work can be done on the model before it arrives.......Eduards is located in the Czech Republic,  so it might take some time to get to me.

Thanks Denis.

There is still a gap, as it hasn't been glued to the hull yet :) As is the other one. Tonight I'll try to have the upper hull painted light grey. After that I can "install" the decks permanently, and you shouldn't be worried you might trip over that  gap, or fall into it ... ;)

Yes you can prepare.  You might start with building up the hull, and the other structures and - as I wrote earlier - paint them whilst you build them. Which structures depend largely on what you want to replace by, either PE or bashing. You got some old remains of wooden/plastic kits hanging around which may have replacement parts, better suited to your "needs". You can also prepare your paint mixtures, e.g. I mixed the brownish deck colour as described above, and the black I concoted from Vallejo black (7 drops) with olive drab (3 drops), takes the edge off the black. The red of the hull was Vallejo fire red and white. Can't recall the ratios ... Yupz getting old ;) The bollards are truely horrendous. If possible, consider buying some large 1/700 scale ones to replace them. Souldn't be expensive at all. There are enough on your side of the pond. Study the drawing Greg supplied in one of his first postings. Have another look at what we did and improve on us :D You love to walk your own road ... here is your chance to do that in a slightly different way ... (Say hello to your lovely admiral, and give Gibs a pat)

I always drill out the port holes as I find they  fill up with paint otherwise.

You can build the deck housings and dry fit them to the deck to ensure they fit flush.

I take an am opposite approach to Carl in that I like to fit the deck first as I think it gives a stable hull and I can fix any gaps before priming. It also saves a lot of handling afterwards.

I also like to set up the support stand by drilling through the hull. If you’re not using a kit specific PE set you’re only looking to fit gaps and replace pieces. Destroyers are soo much smaller than battleships.
