G Class Destroyer by cog - FINISHED - Trumpeter - 1/350 - PLASTIC - from Tribal Class kit

Recommended Posts

When starting at the V class with RGL, I got interested in the RN G & H Class destroyers. Thus, got on the net and found this kit

Pictures later, I am presently unable to upload any size photograph

Some general info:

H-class

  • Type: Destroyer
  • Service Period: 1936-1949
  • Characteristics:
    • Length: 323 feet (98.45 meters)
    • Beam: 33 feet (10.06 meters)
    • Draught: 12 feet 5 inches (3.79 meters)
    • Displacement: 1,340 tons (Standard): 1,859 tons (Full Load)
  • Crew: 137 (Peacetime); 146 (Wartime)
  • Propulsion: 3 x Johnson boilers, 2 x Parsons geared turbines, 2 x shafts, 34,000 shp (25,000 kW)
  • Range: 5,530 nautical miles (10,242 kilometers) at 15 knots (27.78 km/h)
  • Speed: 36 knots (66.67 km/h)
  • Armament:
    • 4 x QF 4.7"/45-caliber Mk.IX dual purpose naval guns (4x1)
    • 8 x .50-caliber machine guns (2x4)
    • 8 x 21" torpedo tubes (2x4)
    • 20 x depth charges (1 x rail and 2 x throwers)

Guns will be replaced, either by brass, or 3D printed, I found the torpedo tubes in 3d very appealing so I'll try those again ...

First I've got 172 port holes to drill

Where did you get that information from OC?

I think I read about it on one of our fellow build sites  where someone compaired the plans of the actual ship with the hull in the kit, and discovered the kits hull is slightly too level and missing some sheer towards the bow,  they recrified it by building up the bow a few mm (not sure of the exact amount)  and filling some of the port holes and re cutting some new ones to follow the new sheer.

Interesting OC. I would need the top view, and the line plan to get that right as well. There is one other detail: Is that a G class or an H class ... they do differ despite the fact they share the same basis. Furthermore, I couldn't find data for it, so I don't know if all were built in the same yard ... can't imagine with the pressure of WWII, did the yard stick exactly to the drawing ... (need for speed)

Im not 100%  sure carl,   it mentions it even in a kit review  here    -  http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/ships/hms/dd/eskimo-350-tsm/tsm-review.html

I am sure that other model makers have said the lack of sheer follows for most of the RN ww2 Destroyers, please foregive me if I am wrong, I have never built one and just quoted what I have read.

Since I want to build this kit as a RN version (HMS vs HMCS from the kit) I've been looking into the different assets of the kit. For one the armament for an H class is wrong they deliver 4.5" single guns, whilst all H class have been equiped with the 4.7" single variant which has a sharp bent in the casing vs a roundish one in the 4.5" Guns to order. I'll be getting the quadruple vickers to and need to get 20mm oerlikon's which were installed from 1940 onwards.

The kit supplies two aft structure types, so I need to wait for the books to shed some light on which one to use. In the mean time I'll start prepping the hull for painting ...

Anybody is welcome so too a flying Dutchman. Though this will be a somewhat slower ride than the previous build. I'll be needing some time to research weathering techniques

That's one I need. The aft structure is noticeably shorter than the one in the kit, so I'll need to do some bashing. I found out the torpedo tubes are not quads but pentads like these (courtesy of shapeways - copy right Micro Master)
