King of the Mississippi by Smokey030 - Artesania Latina - 1:80 - first build

Recommended Posts

Yeah I started this over a year ago while i was in Korea,  my wife bought it for me in Seoul.  Unfortunately I was to busy to work on it much there, but now since I am back in the States I decided to continue on.  Currently though the wife and I live in a two bedroom apartment with 4 cats (the cats already broke the model once...) so i have no permanent work space (will be house hunting this September) to leave the model out.  It becomes quite a chore to setup and tear down a workspace to just do a little bit of work.  I am determined to work on it a little everyday though and look forward to learning from it.

This weekend I worked on the next two cabins, I skipped the decking of the second deck as I was struggling with the herring bone setup.  I know that if I take a break from a part that I am having trouble with and come back to later i will do well with it.  I apologize for the poor quality of the pictures, I took these, my wife took the orginal posted pictures.20180702_203747.thumb.jpg.e7ee91b41e2ea539f827bb2b4e5c8ca0.jpg20180702_205846.thumb.jpg.5d1e80b7b5f49ec48311178e9a31d554.jpg20180702_210907.thumb.jpg.df8091ad09b8daefebe659ff38fe3b40.jpg20180702_210850.thumb.jpg.f3c455f7bf37013c2f844dc2ce8c37a3.jpg

Hello all,

An update on my progress, sadly it has been slow, work has been demanding and the wife and I have been house hunting.  The good news about the house hunting is that we have found a house and should be able to close in mid September.  The house we are closing on has fully a finished bonus room above the garage that the wife has agreed to allow me to have for my work space.  No more taking 30 minutes to set up to work on my model, I found the setting up took most of my desire to model out of me.

The first picture is of the pewter pieces the kit recommends to use for windows, but i do not like the look so decided to frame and make my own windows.  20180802_213405.thumb.jpg.695668923e3c09bf47ef0e4b6bdb18e9.jpg20180802_221801.thumb.jpg.85a99810bbd8b142167832c6e765e773.jpg20180802_221832.thumb.jpg.ed98554502568df55d3fa5ba33da02d0.jpg20180802_221700.thumb.jpg.d3b83547870b318235a61e52081cf426.jpgThe parts are still rough and require a lot of sanding but i must wait for the glue to dry first. I hope it will be worth it in the end.

Hello all again, sorry it has been several months since my last update.  The wife and I purchased a house so I have been dealing with getting the house the way she wants it. But with the new house I was able to get a permanent work space for all my modeling needs.20181211_202501.thumb.jpg.506305a1c46ac2b12a65af292c4affc7.jpg

20181211_202509.thumb.jpg.5a0c9c5e225459da48312593ab7aa973.jpg20181211_202518.thumb.jpg.acad86a660edfbfa9ed89f7e3520194b.jpg

The only downside to the space is my cats insist on sharing the room with me.20181211_203740.thumb.jpg.6a56bcaf224b39253ef13ee31bd67750.jpg

Thus I can't leave any of my works out while not working on them.

I have started up again and made some progress on the build.

20181211_190750.thumb.jpg.ad6886b00544b7be402ce89c67c535aa.jpg

I have glued the first two decks together.

20181211_191249.thumb.jpg.6bf168dc58e1ed6139838d4a9b5f9fe6.jpg20181211_191438.thumb.jpg.bdaf479d2f341333c82ce5d731cc8166.jpg20181211_191516.thumb.jpg.65f46d4ca4d1d4930b77dbda8d7438c9.jpg

I have redrilled the holes for the nails because my first attempt was not straight and driving me nuts. You now can see how my windows will look since I decided to make them out of wood and not use the pewter windows supplied in the kit. They will at a later time will have the red background like the doors on the first floor.  Also i started trimming the top and bottom in wood, I feel it will add a bit of finish to the project.20181211_191507.thumb.jpg.84c1e1bef4c691ae0a1c652d47e50817.jpg

That is all for now, thanks and any input will be greatly appreciated.

  • 4 years later...

Well, I am back, had to put this and all other projects on hold for a long, my family was blessed with a child, and I also had to switch jobs.  Now I have started try to get back into the swing of building my models that I have in the stash.  I find trying to build a model with a three-year-old boy quite a challenge, but he is a blast.  Now on to what I have added to the build.

20230502_210814.thumb.jpg.f6ee0c69f3c3c262336b4f1609718f6c.jpg

This kit has pewter windows, doors and shutters, which honestly, I can't stand so I decided to make my own windows, doors and shutters (shutters have yet to be put on but they are built). I cut out the windows and then put red tissue paper behind them to simulate curtains and to allow light to shine through.  I have noticed that Artesania Latina is now producing this kit with see through windows now which I think will make this a better-looking kit.

20230502_210843.thumb.jpg.a93d458daa075fb1ca88d895dead9957.jpg

I showed my wife my work and she told me that the model would look so much better if it would light up.   I was dear god no, that would be so much work and I doubt I could do that. And so I looked at her like she was crazy!

20230502_210954.thumb.jpg.11d797760bc4f430b0fac8cfbd225eae.jpg

So, after researching how to add lighting I started to add lights.  I had to solder all the LEDs together and run power.  I chose to go with a flickering orange LED for the build as I thought it would look the best.  I will be lighting up each level of the model as I go.

20230502_211137.thumb.jpg.94f2f47b503eaf71f8d3ab1370352417.jpg20230502_211247.thumb.jpg.12f4b6b8e5e4b641d8fe5987fcc6c576.jpg20230502_211149.thumb.jpg.741c866ed782f97394c6c77f0cc5f5d1.jpg20230502_210912.thumb.jpg.4bdf1b1a6702819b2255175994104ffc.jpg

This is my first time ever attempting to wire a model so my soldering and work is not that great but so far it is working.  I used a power board that was attended for a model railroad but it seems be working great, in fact I attend to install a second one higher up just to make the load easier on the kit.20230502_210715.thumb.jpg.be4940590ac44839cace348965e098c5.jpg

That is it so far, I will be drilling through the bottom to run the power cord through (I hate batteries).  I will also being installing the shutters and moving on to the next deck.

Time for an update, I know it has been a while, but I have been working on it when work and family life allow.  I have completed the second level and completely ran lights throughout the level, and also started on the third level.  I have completed all the light building so it should move a bit faster but then again time might not be on my side.

20230911_182530.thumb.jpg.8e6fa5242a02f56459fffce0dbc72710.jpg20230911_182549.thumb.jpg.28f52b08f096bf56e0050e52a451677f.jpg

The stairs were quite a challenge, but I think they came out better than I expected.

20230911_182622.thumb.jpg.4219beb20e461c4413e4867b2eeacf7c.jpg20230911_182725.thumb.jpg.691be08e3b22bd7085267b575d5dc916.jpg

Even though you can not see the exact lighting effects they flicker to simulate a candle. Which I think makes it a bit more stylish.

And now on to the third deck, I am almost done with it, just need to place doors and put it all together, I think.

20230911_182751.thumb.jpg.cbe2a495a2570e3fe7766c8887aae34a.jpg

Hope you enjoy, this model is a lot of fun for me.

Just caught up with you and following along.

Looking good!  As you say, a fun model to build, and your windows and lighting changes certainly enhance the model.

I found AL only supply just enough wood strips with no leeway for mistakes or alterations.

Attached the third deck on to the ship, and ran lighting,

20230925_194347.thumb.jpg.5cd703f74b081dcef2bcc76e51f088d3.jpg20230925_194402.thumb.jpg.c7d7d80b71b6c9d67dd6d948d9742cf2.jpg

The wire you see going through the top is for the pilot house, which I am planning to light up as well.  After the pilot house is installed and lit, I will go back and add trim to all levels like the first floor currently has, so that i can hide the ugly edges and stop light bleed.  But she is coming along, 20230925_194545.thumb.jpg.59f8360d443e0a4ae1ad83534874ffc3.jpg20230925_194559.thumb.jpg.a7754ca3c4b07407cecbeb10a8ab7b1a.jpg20230925_194738.thumb.jpg.b0b620619e0eb26733184e5c7f0ab66b.jpg20230925_194608.thumb.jpg.2598844f359a72ed06fda4d22f1b7b77.jpg20230925_194452.thumb.jpg.380c9b4e11be0cfc966ead3fbc9a6917.jpg20230925_195433.thumb.jpg.d09f37f96c4193c413351e9d3241ce9f.jpg20230925_195446.thumb.jpg.f147e22c2e86b47327783e67002d8231.jpg

And here you see my little helper that has been with me through the whole process giving me pointers.20230925_195307.thumb.jpg.6c57c1f24b138523271714a8ccf1fddf.jpg

Well time has progressed and so has my work on my ship.  I have completed wiring and attaching the pilot house to the ship.  With that all the electrical is done being ran and most of the ships main pieces have been constructed.  Now it is time to start adding the details which there are a lot of. I am excited to see it really taking shape.  My next step is to trim it out, I am just waiting for the wood I ordered to start that process.

20231103_202654.thumb.jpg.183408437cf9551082691b28c8a69b4f.jpg

The pilot house windows were a challenge, I decided to go with black thread and laminating it between the clear plastic.  I think it came out very well and will now be new tool in my tool box for future builds.

20231103_203032.thumb.jpg.1aabe717fdf6be0e21e7293a6c19628d.jpg

It also is lit in the pilot house and I will show off the lantern that I built in the roof later on.

now I wait to work on the trim and start the details.  I think it is starting to look like a ship.  Thank you to my wife for taking the pictures.

Well time for an update, time has been limited due to the holidays but some stuff has been done.  I completed trimming out the edges of the model which I feel adds a more completed look, I used walnut from model expo online. I also built and placed the stairs on the model.  I really like the how the stairs and platforms going to the pilot house look, it came out really nice with the trimming of the platforms.  After completing the stairs I treated what has been done on the model so far with some Tung Oil finish since the next steps will block my ability to treat the model later.

20240119_162202.thumb.jpg.8866f054e43ba1bb489f2cab38eb5e9c.jpg

The oil used, I think this oil displays the look of the wood very well.

The stairs in the front of the ship, the railing will be added soon. Wanted to stain it before I added the railing.

The stairs and platforms to the pilot house came out really nicely if I do say so myself.

Now I will start with placing the outer railings along the decks.  I am still debating if I want to add figures in model, I am really torn. Regardless I am really enjoying this build and thank you all that has posted your builds on this ship because it really gives me great ideas on how to proceed forward.  Also I must thank my wife for taking the pictures, she always takes better pictures than I do.  Till the next update...
