Robert E Lee by jarero - Scientific Models - Scale 1:139

Recommended Posts

Well that makes it 3 votes to 0 in favor of the added wood grain so continue I shall....

Jared,

Looking good.....I do like the effect of the planking over the smooth ply.

Engine room risers?   I'm beginning to wonder if we really are comparing the same Bobs....... :D :D

And here I thought vacation meant you would not be building for a while.... Thanks for helping me decide!

Cheers,

Jim

It seems that Bob has many faces?

Vacation starts in 6 days and counting. I won't be able to build for a couple weeks but at least I will be on a ship!

Gleason, thanks for posting pictures of your model.  I looked for ages trying to find some finished examples of the kit and had all but given up.  Looks like you did a first rate job building her.  I'm not sure what makes it an "easy" kit as I lack confidence in my abilities since I am so new to this hobby but I am enjoying the challenge.

Well Bob needs some wood to burn so I had to stock up!

They included some kind of rough round wood/fiber that almost seems like a grass similar to bamboo? Not sure what it is really.

100_0683-L.jpg

I cut it into approximately 1/4 pieces but not too exact as to attempt to add some realism.

100_0685-L.jpg

100_0684-L.jpg

Then I glued a piece of tape up side down on a piece of scrap wood and started my wood pile.

100_0686-L.jpg

After I got the base layer down I added wood glue that dries clear in the areas that I wanted to add more layers of logs.

100_0687-L.jpg

The kit called for two stacks of lumber, one on each side of the engine room.

100_0694-L.jpg

100_0693-L.jpg

And the reaction from the audience when I finished......

100_0697-L.jpg

Can't you see the excitement!

Looks like they're planning a K9 mutiny. Hope those ticket are in your name?

Also, dogs are very hard to impress with dropping logs, they consider themselves professionals.

Especially well they understand wood grades  :D

Leave it to you all to stink up the place (especially Keith) :D :D :D :D :D :D

Yeah I was reminded yesterday all too well that they know logs when I mowed the lawn.  I decided against that level of authenticity and left them outside.  I will stick with the ones I made instead!

It is about time to start gluing some parts to the deck and making Bob look like a 3D model.

These are formers that are glued to the deck to help guide the shape of the aft walls.

Jared,

Coming along nicely!  :)

I'm amazed at how organized you are....seems like the only time I get organized is when I lose track of some tool or part and have to put everything away to find it! :D

Cheers,

Organized, not the way I would describe it! Sometime it looks like a tornado touched down on my work bench but I try to keep things in order.

I neglected to take pictures of the construction of the next part but each side of the paddle wheel arches is made of two pieces of wood with a butt joint. The reason for this is that the grain of the wood changes 90 deg. to allow for easier shaping against the former that I installed on the deck previously.

Thanks for the compliments everyone!

Jim, unfortunately I am back from vacation (had a great trip) but now I am in the middle of moving so I don't have a workspace set up as of yet and I have a huge "to do" list ahead of me. No worries though as I will return to this build as soon as I can get setup and have time.

Looking very nice.  I was just in Gettysburg last week, speaking of RE Lee.  River boats are fascinating in both design and structure.  Very nice indeed.

Thanks John, I appreciate you stopping by!

Well what started out as just a two week vacation and then a move to a new house turned into an unexpected 4 month break from modeling. I stopped in from time to time to check on other peoples projects but didn't feel I had much to contribute since I wasn't actively working on my model. I almost felt guilty at times that I wasn't making any progress or wasn't more involved on the site. So at this point I am moved and have finally had time to setup my workspace and have officially dug back into this project. I should have some nice updates soon with pictures and recent progress. Thanks everyone for saving me a seat while I was gone.
