Ok, maybe I'll add another update sooner than that.....

Hi Jared,

I thought you where posting on my log, so maybe you are also back in business…..

And yes, there you are.

Nice progress and a good idea to use a photocopy for the railing.

Looks good !

Thanks Sjors, and yes I am back in business and hopefully will not take such a long sabbatical next time. It's really tough though when the weather gets nice out because I love being outside in my yard.

Time for another update.....

In an attempt to be more efficient I decided to only take pictures of completed steps and avoid all of the in progress messy work so here is the completed boiler:

100_0761-L.jpg

Ok, well the truth is I forgot to take any pictures until I was finished. You didn't actually think efficiency every enters my mind with this hobby? :D

I should note that the paint looks spotty because it hadn't fully dried when I took the pictures.  It looks much better now.

Here is the location on the deck for the boiler:

100_0766-L.jpg

If you notice in the bulkhead at the front of the engine room there are two small holes. Those are to plum the boiler into the rest of the system. The tape is there for masking off the are to be painted for the boiler room floor.

A test fit of the boiler:

Looks good to me but I should check with the boss:

She doesn't look convinced. Maybe she can be bribed with a treat?

That boiler looks big Jared.

Maybe it looks different when it is in place.

Keep on coming with those pictures  :D  :D

animaatjes-sjors-94584.gif

I guess I never thought about it before but you are right it does look large.  I have to assume that's the size they made them back then.  The unfortunate part is that almost all of it gets covered up eventually and you can barely see it at all.

Jared,

Great progress! :)

I am amazed at the difference in the model from my Amati version.  The scale difference may have had a bit of impact but it appears that your 'Bob' will be significantly more detailed than mine.  In lieu of a boiler there were eight boiler 'doors' on an empty wall.

By the way, where did you get the dinner plate that looks like a penny??? :P :P :P :P

Going to be interesting to observe.

Cheers,

Jim

Thanks for the compliments Jim. I have a complete matching set of Penny dinerware (custom order) :D!

It is surprising just how much detail there is in some areas and then a lack of detail in others.  Some of the parts that use paper instead of wood/metal/plastic baffles me.  I looked long and hard for better fittings but just couldn't justify the $100 price tag.  I still think it is turning out okish but I would do things a lot different if I started over today.  All part of being a newbie I suppose.

Hello jared, As I said before, nice neat workmanship,Q,what type and brand of white did you use,and did you use a spray gun,Thanks Edwin :piratebo5:

Edwin,

The compliments are much appreciated.  I am using the Model Expo acrylic paints watered down slightly and brushed on.  I have an airbrush setup but have yet to try it out yet.  I am not sure that I would recommend the paint though.  When you are working with it it is hard to get even coverage.  It is possible however that the paint is just fine and I lack the skill or knowledge to use it properly.  Regardless I will look into different paints in the future and compare results.

PS, good job on the base, love the color, did you make it.Edwin :piratebo5:

As much as I would like to take credit that base was supplied with the kit and I agree that it is a nice color!

Update time again.

Cutting out deck pieces, sanding, painting, rinse and repeat:

This piece sits around the boiler and just in front of it:

Part of the aft deck behind the paddle wheel houses:

Did I mention how much I miss laser cut parts?

The work continues on cutting out deck pieces, sanding gluing, painting and staining:

All of the deck pieces rely on a butt glue joint to hold them together so I added a reinforcement strip of wood to help stabilize the joint. This will be covered up by the saloon deck when it is installed.

You can see in the above picture that there is a cutout for the grand staircase. He is a close up:

Jared,

Good progress.... :)

I see the assembly notes right on the deck......my Bob had none of that but the 20 pages that were translated from Italian weren't very helpful either... :D :D :D :D :D :D

Very interesting build you have going on here! I love the pipe work for the boilers. And the decks have come up real well. Good job.

Just finished reading this post in its entirety as I had purchased one of these kits back in the early 1990's . Started the build and got the 1st deck somewhat finished when I discovered R/C airplanes instead and dove head over heels into that for 20+ years. Fast forward to today and I'm thinking of finishing this build as I still have everything although a little dusty. So does anyone know what happened to Jarero and his build? Robhuv have you finished yours? Also if anyone has words of encouragement I could use a little as I know the small scale of these parts is one of the reasons I hade such a hard time building this model.

You did a remarkable job Rob.

Lazyguy, we'd love to see another build log of this kit, so I hope that you consider starting one.  I'm sure you will get lots of help.

Wow that looks great Rob, I hope I can finish mine let alone have it look anything that nice. Looking over my work from 20 some years ago I can tell that my building skills back then left little to be desired, so i'm scratching my head a little right now on how to proceed. I know now from r/c airplanes that ALL parts have to fit together sooner or later but it doesn't look like thats how this was started, throw in painted parts (yellowed) a little warping and I got my work cut out for me. My building skills were never in the fine details but I see now that will have to change with ship building.

As far as a build log I think that would be a good idea Scott, guess i should start a new thread so not to highjack this one. Thanks all Larry

Larry,

I look forward to following your build log. I would repaint it now before adding anything else. I would recommend saving the scrap wood from the sheets incase you need to make any additional pieces. I was missing some of my square stock for the trim pieces and the scrap wood came in handy. Also, separate the model into a bunch of smaller builds. It helps with the assembly. Looks like you will be ready to build the boiler soon. Good luck!

-Rob
