St Nectan by Kevin - FINISHED - Mountfleet Models - 1/32 - Steam Trawler - Completed June 2020

Recommended Posts

Good evening everyone

some of you know i was building a cold war destroyer HMS Fife in 1/72 scale, but i was approached and ask if i would be interested in parting with her, which after a couple of months i sold her on, with the funds from that i have put them towards my next build

before i do that i must complete or show willing to the wife that i will complete  HMS Victory, which has been on and off the work bench for 7 years now

so i have started this thread to use as a testing ground for ideas and research

the new build is 1/32 scale - 66 inches long, made by a UK company Mountfllet models

BUT there is more (more i hear you say)

yes i will be opening up one side and displaying here as a static cutaway

here is my first picture of the kit, which will be ordered after the Warwick show which i believe to be early next month

Its all part of Kev's journey, bit like going to the dark side, but with the lights on

All the best

Good morning everyone

well until i have a weeks holiday, when i will have the opportunity to build the dock diorama to finish the Victory, i was left with the decision of what to do next, and for the same reasons i will delay the start of the Amerigo Vepucci (the mess)

so yesterday i made a start on the trawler

Grimsby UK has a museum dedicated to the builders of all hulls made by the company, and they reckon they will have some plans available for me this summer, so that i can sort out the internal details, but that leaves me plenty to do

Wheel house

LOL i cut out the the bridge window panel (took hours and then snapped it in 1/2 as i tried to fit it so made another in plastic card

IMG_4106.thumb.JPG.836def8b1daf326b9687d56130e1963e.JPGIMG_4107.thumb.JPG.f452df3b11b4bab16b6d1e7c298b62f4.JPGIMG_4108.thumb.JPG.9f0fd2ae8f8141c7f94d101f78d8fe68.JPG

the wheel house assembly is split into several sections the chart room and radio room, the partitions that were in place have been removed for now as i want to adapt them for some hidden wires that will bring some lighting in IMG_4111.thumb.JPG.1af38d58e51a4ed960f0cecda0e23aa8.JPGIMG_4112.thumb.JPG.ec66bbfce1432c0f30604ac077eba5b4.JPGIMG_4113.thumb.JPG.58e881999f1f164807ef5d08ebe7aa96.JPGIMG_4114.thumb.JPG.c047f04e0e62c601cda0edf9d173974c.JPGIMG_4115.thumb.JPG.f6f76b741ff4237bfa71efca571eae8b.JPGIMG_4116.thumb.JPG.1a68d4f1ab36e1fd8c3e7d8ee6a35cff.JPGIMG_4117.thumb.JPG.d2fa35d9ed8a050da4b6560574797e83.JPG

the top portion of the bridge front is panelled but apparently the same colour as below it, im not sure thats how i want to do it thoughIMG_4119.thumb.JPG.8bd0c947a7d019ec46c3666d0b30cd7d.JPGIMG_4120.thumb.JPG.4a5279dddb681d0cf9b5ff5e8a4de7f1.JPGIMG_4121.thumb.JPG.483929630fb325b5d1b25811680c7d8f.JPGIMG_4122.thumb.JPG.ffde569f78a1243a4d09320de97dde38.JPGIMG_4123.thumb.JPG.20aaf62df4f8773813bf4409afd54a21.JPGIMG_4124.thumb.JPG.2a865c15ba59213cae18fddc8dab8aa7.JPG

i see it decided to put the photo in reverse, but i am happy with the results so far, like the victory i have no intentions of her being a show room condition build, LOL i cannot work like that, she will also need to be well weathered,

good to see you've started to build her!  I've enjoyed trawlers and fishing vessels,  so I know you'll have quite a bit of fun  :)   unfortunately,  I've never built one like your planning,  so I'm a bit scant on suggestions.   there's so much associated with the helm room and the main cabin,  that it might be hard to remove roofs.  the only thing I might suggest,  is making the windows larger,  to let more light in.   pleased to follow you anywhere! ;)

finished builds:

Phylly C & Denny-Zen - the Lobsie twins - bashed & semi scratch dual build

Billing's Gothenborg 1:100 / Billing's Boulogne Etaples 1:20
Billing's Half Moon 1:40 - some scratch required

I just "re-discovered" this build, Kevin.  Looking good and it should keep you busy for quite awhile. ;)  I think on the bridge's roof, you'd need to put a lining that hangs down inside to fit the walls of the bridge.  Like the tabs are used on a plastic model.

Good evening everyone

i put quite a bit of thought into the bridge roof last night and eventually fell asleep with no solution, then whilst walking the dog came up with this, now i have a way ahead (small steps) other than that today has been spent on the hull with the bilge keels, will cover that this week

so now i have a removable roof panel which will allow access after the interior is fitted out

I am a fervent enthusiast of the micro magnets, made of rare earths. These are extremely strong as long as they touch each other. I use them to hold the two halves of my Trumpeter submarine.

I can see  a few being put into this build, im still very early into the build and no doubt a few areas will require a little help from mother nature

Good morning everyone

For the followers of my log,

Do you want me to finish one section, then move on to keep some consistency (long time between posts)

or

show what i am/have done )regular updates, (but no consistency)

this is a long term build, and i am hoping to teach my self new things as i go along, plus she will be a cutaway (well slice) as the top 1/2 of the hull will be displayed above the bottom part,

to do this i am moving from one part to another whilst i waIt for bits to arrive or research to be carried out.

i love posting what i have done, but realise that some dont like bitty logs

Its all part of Kev's journey, bit like going to the dark side, but with the lights on

Hi Chap,

Not "Stalking", but interested with your build.

I am interested in why you did not do an RC version?

The model lends itself....

Anyway, who am I to gainsay what you are doing, I am enjoying the progress none the less....

Cheers and Regards,

Harry.

good morning Harry, thank you for your interest,

I have never seen a cutaway trawler, so gthought i would have ago, the build would be to big for my car and a doggie, so i would rather spend my pennies on bits for the build rather than rc gear, and i can super detail it rather than making sure nothing drops of on the local pond

Wow! Kevin, I was just looking at your SD-14 build, fantastic, can't wait to see what you do with this trawler!

The idea of a cut-a-way model sounds fascinating to me.  will be following your progress eagerly.  A few years ago I saw a cut-a-way model of the Morgan at the museum in Mystic and fell in love with the idea of it.   Am attaching a picture of Mystic's model of the Morgan.

no....I'm not stalking you Kev.........just doing what I do for all.........I look too ;)   figured you might need an extra pair of eyes........and I see your lament,  there isn't much out there.  the only other thing I can suggest,  is that someone on this planet has likely done pictures of a trawler interior {maybe even this one}.........to find a forum site that has pictures would be a boon indeed!.   I think your project has plenty of merit........I will continue to look for you in my spare time

very much appreciated

my plan at present is some time in the near future to slice the hull fwd to aft, just above the bilge keel, im hoping that with the right plans i will then be able to incorporate (from aft) accommodation, engine room, boilers, fish room, ???? accommodation

depending on the line i cut will affect what is seen of course, another option is to remove on side only then i could let the fibre hull take the weight and with false bulkheads the wiring could be hidden

the two halves will be kept apart by brass rods that will incorporate any wiring

Steam winch

Just forward of the superstructure is the steam winch, which builds into a very nice module, but with a lot of cleaning up

it is 90% complete, but to finish the bits it will need painting, so will be done a lot later with all the other motors and winches that are sill in bags
