Protecting the wooden deck during painting makes the whole process a little more difficult. But this is order. 
 Before painting the hull it is necessary to install all the metalwork and for this you must first lay the deck boards.

Valeriy -  I use black card / paper between deck planks to simulate caulking. I have found that the paper needs to be good quality and not fibrous. If it is fibrous the sanding dust tends to bed itself in the planks leaving them looking quite dirty - this is OK if you want a weathered look but otherwise much better to use top quality paper.

Keith, in order to protect myself from mistakes on the model, I try to always conduct an experiment with the material.

I am applying a sanding filler before anything else. This stabilises the paper and sort of turns it into a compound material. The filler also prevents 'dirt' from getting into the wood pores.

Eberhard, could you explain in more detail about the sanding filler?

Perhaps the translator is incorrect.

Valery, this is just some sort of nitrocellulose laquer filled e.g. with very fine pumice powder. It is used as a primer on wood, to fill the pores. On decks and surfaces that will be matte, depending on the wood, often one coat is sufficient. It sands well and I finish with fine steel-wool.

So you're saying the black caulking is black paper?  Then cut strips similar to your planks and lay them between the planks...then sand it all even....that's brilliant and time consuming for sure...especially when adding end seams as well as length seams.

Yes,  this is black paper. At the beginning of the paper is glued to the wooden plank and then it is glued to the deck. I agree that this is a time-consuming operation, but over time comes the experience and speed of installation of boards increases. The longer the board, the less effort it requires.

No,  I'm not a watchmaker. I have an easy scale, only 1/75.
And watchmakers jeweler work on a smaller scale 1/160.

Beautiful work! I love working with brass and solder, and you are doing an excellent job!

 

Commercial sanding sealers typically are clear paint with a fine powder - like talc - mixed in to fill in the pores in the wood. However, the white talcum powder can make the wood a lighter color. If the wood is to be painted with an opaque color this isn't a problem, but for "bright" or unpainted wood, like decks, it can create an unnatural look.

 

You can also mix very fine wood dust from sanding into clear paint and use it to seal the wooden decks. Then after sanding and finishing with fine steel wool the wood retains a natural color. If the deck planks are fine grained you can just use clear paint without a filler.
