To make it easier to put the knees on each side, I used a small structure created from some scraps. Wood filler is then used to seal the inevitable small interstices. In parallel, I made progress on the installation of the windlass. Just follow the steps described in the instruction manual. The windlass templates are glued on the 4 sides of the cedar stick. I took advantage of having a perfectly horizontal seat to drill the 8 holes provided for the windlass bars. The superfluous wood is removed using a cutter then the whole is refined with sandpaper The angles of the 8 holes were squared using a mini chisel. The paper is moistened and easily removed. Finally the ends are gradually shaped and the right length for inserting the windlass in the brackets is reached. The windlass temporarily positioned. After temporarily sticking the boxwood strip on a hardwood square using double-sided scotch, I formed the molder by running the scraper many times over the boxwood strip until I was satisfied with the result. Following precisely the instructions, I then carried out the mast thwart. Finally all the elements were put in place. As my base of blue oil paint is now perfectly dry, I will be able to work on the frieze. I just stick it on a piece of chipboard to make sure it doesn't warp and make it more convenient to handle. And yes, I confirm your feelings, this project is really enriching and very fun. What I really like about this project is that each step represents a mini-project in itself. I used a small strip of wood of the right width to be sure to stick the 2 elements at the right distance and well parallel. The bolts are simulated and the block is put in place. One last note: with this project, you don't have to worry too much, because Chuck was generous in the elements provided. Any part which represents a certain difficulty is supplied in several copies. I want to finalize the base for my longboat. I will try to reproduce part of a ship's deck. It will not be a faithful reproduction but rather an inspiration. First, I draw the laying plane in order to determine the length of the different segments. All the planks are then cut. My new Byrnes table saw really makes my job easier 😁 I simulate the caulking using the black plastic sheet found at the back of the folders to store paper documents. It suffices to precisely cut strips of the width corresponding to the thickness of the planks and then glue them between each row. As the gluing is done with wood glue, I spread my work over 2 weeks because you have to wait until each row is completely dry before proceeding with the installation of the next one. The left edge will need to be sanded to equalize the length... A first coat of teak oil is applied. I will need your advice on the species of wood to use for the small support on which the longboat will be placed. There are two options: use the same wood species as that of the deck, in that case: american mapple (strip of wood located below in the photo) or use swiss pear (strip of wood located above). It seems more judicious to me to use pear wood in order to better distinguish the two different elements: the ship's deck and the longboat support. But I still hesitate ... What do you think? I think either the maple or pear would look good but I lean towards the pear for some contrast with the Alaskan Yellow Cedar hull. It might help to the boat over the base along with a piece of maple and then a piece of pear and see how it looks. It will look great either way. In the first photo, a maple piece is placed between the base and the longboat while in the second photo it is a pear wood. It seems to reinforce my first idea of a better contrast if I use pear wood. The base has quite a nice variety of color and the pear is different than any of the colors. I like the way the maple carries the look of the base. Legos blocks and a piece of wood slipped into the gap provided to receive the keel ensure perfect symmetry of the two pieces. A photocopy of the plan is used to aid in the placement of pieces on the base. The extra keel copy is used to properly align the two pieces when gluing. The base is finished. More than to apply one last layer of teak oil. Provisional test of placement.
