Question, what’s the best way to do bulwarks on a card model, when you have sweep ports and gunports?

1st layer of planking is on.  After it completely dries, I will use filler to smooth it out.

Thank you very much, I’m learning as I go.

I think that after I sand the hull smooth, I’m going to attach the wales and apply the second layer of planking, along with planking the inside of the bulwarks.

Then I’ll apply the gunport and sweep port pattern and cut the bulwarks to shape.

Quick question, what’s the best way to install a transom on a card model?

Should I just build up the stern frames like any other model, or just glue it to the stern after installing the deck and covering the hull?

Hi,

I would say it depends on the transom itself. In my Mayflower I used the transom piece itself and attached/glued it to the main frame like the other frames. It was hold in place with the horizontal frame parts and the hull sides itself. If the part is small like in your model, maybe you can scratch build some additional frame parts in the back, similar to the shipyard paper models? I will post some pictures tomorrow.

Your approach regarding the bulwarks sounds quite right to me.

Paper and card are always so much softer than wood and plastic, but your model comes along nicely! Looking forward to seeing more!

Rgds,

Radek

That looks like it is going to be a nice strong hull Phil. A question for you - what are the masts going to be made of? I was thinking, it being a card model, they would be rolled card? I have never done one of these and enquiring minds would like to know sir.

I’m going to make them from wood.  This is just going to be mostly card, but it will also have brass wire, copper tape and some wood parts.

So far, so good.  The second sanding is done and I think the hull is about ready for the second layer of planking, after I fix a few minor issues.

I just traced and resized the rudder, bulwarks and deck, so I have my templates made.

I need to cut down the bulwarks, so I can finish the stern and attach the transom, and wales, before I add the second layer of planking.

Hi,

Regarding the transom:

Here are some pictures how I built the stern in my Mayflower, which is of course different than your ship, because it is a galeon. Nevertheless, some of my techniques how to tackle this problem in paper/card modeling.

I cut the bulwarks to shape and attached the transom.  I also closed up the gaps on the stern and cleaned up the underdeck a little.  I’m going to lay down another underdeck piece on top of it, after planking and coppering the hull, to make everything even and lay down planking on top of that.

This has definitely been a learning process for me, but the best way to get better is to exceed your abilities!

I just installed the wales.  The Prince de Neufchatel is starting to look like a ship!

I have also drawn out the cradle and applied the pattern to a sheet of basswood.  I traced the hull shape at bulkheads D and 7, off the body plan, to get the inside shape, then I just hand drew the outside of the cradles. Then I folded the tracing paper over and reflected the cradle at the centerline.

I made a display base today.  The actual base is a premade piece of wood that I picked up at a yard sale this past summer.  The cradle pieces I made out of 1/4” (6mm) thick basswood.  I decided to do a little carving on them, just having fun (which is the whole point of this project anyway).

The model is mounted off-center to allow for the bowsprit.  I actually chose the mounting points based off of the model of the Prince de Neufchatel in the Smithsonian (I found a picture on their website).  I am also going to use their color scheme.

I only planked down to the waterline because I am using contact paper for my second planking and the hull is going to be coppered below the waterline.  Unlike a conventional second planking, the contact paper doesn’t add any thickness to the hull, so there is no reason to plank all the way down.

I just sealed the hull in preparation for painting.  I am going to base coat it black above the waterline.

After it dries, I will copper the hull below the waterline.  I am going to use copper tape and a pounce wheel, just like I did on the Victory.
