Recommended Posts

yes Cog, I had to decrease the size of the photo (the photos that I post are already old compared to the original are usually around 400 kb, and I have no problrmi insertion, with the last inserted I 's decreased to 180 kb, and the system allowed me to insert it without problems)

See ya'

After laying the moldings I put the gunwale, always in walnut

IMG_2921_1.JPG.f5f9dc04b76c798b888a8b9793f7906f.JPG

always using strips of 5 cm to make the curvature (even if these of the main deck was necessary to make them with three parts, joined with simple interlocking, under the carryover the walnut board that I used to make the strips

IMG_2924_1.JPG.6b5d79ba3fc67dcb2e8e5cf3862e3b29.JPG

made with the "fet", (it is the walnut that was in the backyard, but four years ago a strong wind made him fall, and I made many tables for modeling, and with the trunk of the boards of 6 thickness cm, with which I made a large table, but this is another story ...)

carryover of the photos with the finished gunwale

IMG_2932_1.JPG.ae797403f1ab20c0ffb28ed9e0985e28.JPG

it seems that the issues related to the loading of the images are finished, I have not found any problems, the system puts more time loading images, but it seems much more stable,

see you next time

hello Cog,

you're right, lately I haven't updated the shipyard because I returned to work, unfortunately I had to think about recovering the time spent on vacation ...

however, the sooner I update the site with the work done,

see you soon

An update of the work carried out,

the next work was the realization of the major tree, the measurements are very high, both for the diameter and for height, so I thought of making it with four pieces of wood joined together, creating a "compound" tree

so first I chose the table I would have used even if the choice was obligatory: walnut

IMG_2933_1.thumb.JPG.671b3232bb557929d74cb0688cc07c61.JPG

I cut the 8 mm strips and the continuations I joined them by obtaining a beam 16 mm wide

IMG_2937_1.JPG.00723bea2df50d48de10fd2ee754c3bf.JPG

to join them together I used an "L" shaped steel profile to avoid misalignments

IMG_2940_1.JPG.a7bef97eab1eea593a07075c9af089cf.JPG

but when I thought of using the lathe I realized that the piece was longer than the size that the lathe could work

so I had to use a "manual" lathe using the drill and parts of the lathe that I can independently assemble on the work table

IMG_2949_1.JPG.14735e8d7f34807be2be07f8c6725e3f.JPG

allowing me to turn the "long" piece, (over 100 cm)

IMG_2950_1.JPG.0380cbf92d00e7dcd094227a7f9f9568.JPG

in the photo below, you see the upper part of the tree (three strips are visible, of the four, with different colors) the upper part will be removed later, the upper part (made with another strip) that must be inserted in the hole made in top of the tree, as shown in the drawing

IMG_2952_1.JPG.ddf514574b9322702468d61e7f58ce33.JPG

at the next update

Beautiful. Even if you have a limited choice of wood, the waltnut does look very nice. Interesting, the insert in the masthead

You're right Cog, unfortunately as a seasoned wood I only have the walnut and cherry (in considerable quantities) I also have pear, apple and white maple but they will be seasoned in a year or so, I carry the photo of the maple that I "potato" in the garden of the house and which I partly seasoned with the intention of making 1 inch boards

timber that I would like to use for the next model that I plan to make

Than you have some nice wood waiting for you. I have actually no wood at all presently, and after my next plastic build I will have a go at a Ventian Gondola for which I have the drawings from Gilberto Penzo. I do not yet know what wood will be appropriate. Still lots of time before I start

After turning I made the hole on the bridge and I tried the bigger tree, the dimensions are considerable at the base is 13mm (75 cm) the height is greater than the length of the ship, it is said that this was one of the details of the Santa Maria "not appreciated" by Colombo himself (... it seems ...)IMG_2959_1.thumb.JPG.1d69b2bce12d81de1ff214ec1712c84f.JPG

the "white" part at the top of the tree is a defect in photography, due to overexposure)

  • 4 weeks later...

I resume with the work update, it was the turn of the fenders, which I thought were easy to work and insert, I thought,
probably the design of the fenders has undergone over time with the various re-editions and the withdrawal of the modification card and, more surely, the installation of the loops is different from the parts that on the fenders should fit together with them,so I brought back the pieces on the walnut board with a thickness of 4 mm,

IMG_2970_1.JPG.46dc0552c1ff5eae2fa636fd65ad6e7c.JPG

I only cut the edge and I brought back the various fenders on the sides checking that the drawing of the joints was a couple of millimeters apart, so I had to pick up the points of contact with the incintoni and work with the file, the situation seems very simple but in reality the correction of the pieces has engaged me for several hours, I have tried the pieces without gluing them

IMG_2972_1.JPG.44fb07d27393d0f923cab29d6256fc5f.JPG

IMG_2973_1.JPG.bc3c61075fbb9676fdff94e3a08eca5e.JPG

only after having finished laying on both sides would I have thought of gluing them verifying the inclinations of the same that vary with respect to their positioning

later I prepared part of the pieces that make up the parasartie of the mast, these too are only fitted together without gluing, and even these pieces have been modified in the parts of the drawing related to the joints near the fenders (it was inevitable) for this aspect to "glue" them, for now I will stop them with rubber bands

A small update of the works, related to the creation and installation of a bracket near the bow, to make it I used adhesive tape on which I drew the profile of the bracket, after which I cut it realizing the shape shown on the brass plate he allowed me to make the stirrup in a precise way, I made some holes in which I passed the brass thread, then I would brown it,

later the works continued with the construction of the bilge pumps,
to make them I used as a base a tip of the d. of 5 mm covered with adhesive tape on which I quickly glued the strips of the width of 2 mm,

IMG_3140_1.JPG.63ff07b549aeecb931050a2215f044af.JPGthen I prepared the pieces that make up the pump, making the rod, the handle, and the plunger

IMG_3151_1.JPG.e10f8a78a1093f7bd4f35c572a1bb6ed.JPG

assembling them together

placing them on the main part using the copper wire to hold them in place during the gluing

IMG_3146_1.JPG.fcaf6e231b65d71549921c95bab7f527.JPG

to make the water outlet pipe from the pump I used the tin wire, widening the central hole with a pin

IMG_3163_1.JPG.bfc075848db79a892cffaf0417a724e1.JPG

I inserted the water outlet pipe into the hole, and I finished making two small copper bands painted outside the pump

I thank my friends for their appreciation,
the next jobs are the realization of the ankles and the anklets,
to make them I used the classic "toothpicks" finished with the drill and the limes while for the anklets, walnut strips stopped with nails and glue

IMG_3351r_1.thumb.jpg.402efaa06522797aa3aff1702a4dc99b.jpg

the pegs will be cut to the thread by rewinding
while for the realization of the ankles the photo shows the workmanship and results (pieces of simple realization better than those found in commerce)

The construction of the parapets was the next step, to make them I used the cherry tree,

IMG_3415_1.JPG.dc35323d2f737909ecb1cacdb1d028f5.JPG

limes and cutters were the tools used

IMG_3416_1.JPG.a5cd96f66a275746e37bb964d041d83b.JPG

to avoid doing damage on the bridge, I used the paper tape
the marks of the holes for the railing uprights

IMG_3417_1.JPG.8cfa73ec01008b05eb1b57ac614f79df.JPG

for all the parapets the system used was the usual one, they were positioned
without gluing, for now

A constructive detail that takes me a long time and with not always satisfying results is the realization of the stairs, above all the realization of the joint on the upright that serves to give more solidity to the table that forms the step but this time for the realization of the ladders I used a different method which consists in using a double-sided tape on which the uprights are shown with the usual inclination they have on the boat compared to the vertical, thus preparing more uprights in "real" time, obviously also the other uprights that make up the staircase but with the opposite inclination, on the uprights it is brought back gluing in horizontal of the strips of height to scale to the raising of our step preparing with these what will be the joint, while the thickness of the listello will determine the thickness of the joint , in my case the strips are 3.5 mm wide with a thickness of 0.5 mm, once the preparation is finished the uprights are cut and the uprights are obtained with the risers and joints of the steps already prepared, it will be enough to cut them to the desired width and "insert" them in the space of the joint obtained previously,

in a short time I made the four scales

then I put them down

IMG_3428_1.JPG.11c2800a67bd426f8f904c8769d0a333.JPG

with this metedo I have significantly accelerated the realization of the "interlocking" stairs

I wonder if the additional of belaying pins on a model of a late 15th century ship is an anachronism?  A cursory search leads me to the conclusion that belaying pins first began to be used in the late 17th century or early 18th.  Kevels,  cleats and lashing to the planks fixed to the inside of the stanchions are the more probable belaying sites?

I honestly don't know, I tried searching on specialized sites but I couldn't find reliable information,

on the drawing by Adametez the belaying pins are reported, there are also cleats and lashing, which are still partly to be included,

while I believe that yours is a right observation, I try to find information about it

  • 3 weeks later...

It's been a long time since I've updated the site with the development of the works, which have gone ahead, from a point of view I would like to immediately put the last photo I made out of what is the "logic"
evolutionary,,,
after setting up the various situations I thought of making the horizontal winch,as a lumber I used linden and with the lathe I started working with it

IMG_3434_1.JPG.2417c8497d1aa01bbccd349cdbf93eb7.JPG

starting to assemble the constituent parts directly on the piece still between the tips of the lathe

IMG_3437_1.JPG.aa0b204bb96e3e1dd123006e3027fea7.JPG

developing the other parts that make up the winch

IMG_3442_1.JPG.296eb85ab61fcf1a36d8c7c64228231b.JPG

in front of the winch there is the kitchen, for its realization I used a small slab of lead painting it with black paint

finished the pieces that make up the winch I painted them with bitumen I finished the kitchen and to see "the effect" I placed them, always without "sticking" them on the bridge

IMG_3443_1.JPG.2c8c9457a7a98bf37273328dc693d51b.JPG

IMG_3446_1.JPG.426444150349ebf6e7d9d97d997d0598.JPG

to check the ratio between the pieces reproduced in 1/50 scale I made a small man on a scale, I got a young "thin and long" sailor given the period in relation to the fact that the little man is 3.5 cm so should be a high 1.75 (considerable height in 1500) however, the exceptions were also in that period

:)

to finish the bridge there were no lifeboats, which perhaps, given the characteristics, are among the most demanding details ...

I thank my friends for their appreciation,
the construction continued with the construction of the lifeboats, a longboat and a lance,
and in my opinion also this realization taken from the construction plans used has aspects that were perhaps not those that actually were in reality (perhaps)
I used the "bread and butter" technique, preparing blocks of Swiss stone pine on which I reported the horizontal sections of the water lines, reducing them by 4 mm, compensating for the thickness of the ribs and planking
that I would use later,

IMG_3449_1_1.JPG.cafcff473c55c58b994d9c34e4b22849.JPG

IMG_3450_1.JPG.fb9414f6430e5e0e8c72ab36a06c3d44.JPG

after having glued the three sections, taper the block until the lower part of the upper section mates with the contour of the lower water line, if done carefully you will get very precise pieces, (eventually you can make cardboard templates of the order to verify the correspondence of the curvature of the hull in the various points)

IMG_3452_1.JPG.6393e2c6240ab5228d4bc027cde3e668.JPG

I forgot, it is fundamental to cut the central median of the block obtained with a depth of a few millimeters before starting the tapering, in which the keel will be subsequently inserted.

IMG_3453_1.JPG.f6667c275255f6adc4483f76179e2dc4.JPG

supporting the obtained part, on the longitudinal view of the lifeboat, which will serve for the realization of the ribbed
