Hi Backer, if you don't mind me asking, what kind of jig did you use to hold the deadeyes in place for the shrouds?

None, i cheat

First assemble the deadeyes on the right place and glue with extra thin glue (Tamiya)

Allow to dry (24h !)

IMG_20200126_145034.thumb.jpg.6defbf9af30b335f6ea9fb7cef93d2f8.jpg

Only after that tie it to the lower schrouds

Sorry I actually meant the lower deadeyes 😁, but I would hardly call that cheating... Those futtock shrouds will be a pain later for me too I foresee.

I was worried that tying clove hitches for the ratlines would look out of scale myself, but yours is proof it can be done and still look great!

No jig has been used. Everything is done "on sight".
Make the deadeyes, drill holes and put in place.
For me, plastic ship model building is easier than wooden ship model building.
Let's say it is something like the"fingerspitzengefühl" build up after more then 1400 plastic models.)

Microscopic work.

Nice ropework, Patrick!

Thanks,

The space to work easily on this scale is indeed rather limited.

And this space is becoming less and less as more and more ropes are added.
So the hardest part is yet to come

Small update.

One thing I have learned on this forum is.      If you don't like something you've built. Remove it and rebuild it a 2nd time.

Not really neat and correct. So remove and rebuild.

But I did have fun building my piece of nostalgia.

By any chance, was your visit to the Bounty in St. Petersburg, Fla? I visited the Bounty there in the 60's as well. I believe it was still there in the 70's.

This attention to detail is outstanding, especially given the small scale of the model!   The black paint idea is a good one — I have also had to remedy things sometimes when I haven’t got the actual result that I initially imagined, and I think that that is ok.

Started with the schrouds on the top masts. These thin parts of the plastic masts are very fragile.
It is not easy to do rigging to these flexible pieces. It would have been better to replace this plastic with wooden parts in advance, i think.

Got the HMS BEAGLE kit around 1966, when I was ten, and built it then, 'oob' as one would say today. Got the HMS BOUNTY kit around 1970, I think and started to built it. In 1972 I first visited the NMM in Greenwich, which was a revelation then. They had some drawings of the BOUNTY on display then and I got the permission to take pictures. However, I didn't know about the archives and how to get access to them at that time.

Already, when working on the BEAGLE, I didn't like the plastic shrouds, but didn't know any better. Still using the dead-eyes from the kit, I properly (well, more or less) rigged the shrouds and rattled them down with ratlines. But then the project ground to a halt, because I just could not come up with a solution for blocks of a sufficiently small size with my limited experience and tooling. No Internet to be even dreamt of ;)

I still have the model, boxed up, but I don't think I will ever complete it, because I recognise my juvenile mistakes and would need to completely redo it.

Good luck with your project !

Thanks for the likes and positive comments.

1966, then I was 2 years old ... These Beagle and Bounty kits apparently recall a lot of memories for some of us.

Meanwhile
Hoera, Hoera. Standing rigging is finished.

Started with the build of a base plate.
An old photo frame that my wife wanted to throw away.  The inside is filled with a wooden plate

Drilling holes in the keel. ( i should have done much earlier, this was a bit stressful)

IMG_20200220_192602.thumb.jpg.2be25b0e00b0dae3a8551723a435a2e1.jpg

And the model screwed onto the plate.  Before screwing, liquid plastic glue has been put into the holes of the keel. This way the screw goes in easily and thread is "tapped"  into the holes.

IMG_20200222_110624.thumb.jpg.b4662bca37071f0ce261c97d55350ef7.jpg

There will be extra supports on the sides. 1 unpainted test model is ready

 IMG_20200221_190855.thumb.jpg.e9e6ec8ea20f735712e928228c8c383e.jpg

The blocks that I have now (scale 1/100 of a Heller Soleyl Royal) are unfortunately too large for the running rigging.

I have  made 1 unpainted (test)block in plastic.
The wooden blocks that you find in most wooden kits served as an example.

The hole in the block is diameter 0.7 mm.

Patrick, you have done a phenomenal job on this build!  You have taken an average kit and made it a show piece.

I will refer to this build often as well as your other builds.  I am almost sad that you have finished, I look forward to your next build.

Thank you everyone for the nice comments and likes.

This old kit has become a real challenge.  And so far also my cheapest plastic model kit.

A kit for free, some plastic sheet, glue, some paint, and some leftovers from the spareparts box.

Meanwhile :  Started making spars.

The designers of this kit made it easy for themselves when making the mold.  Some spars are simply identical to each other (see sketch)IMG_20200224_184610.thumb.jpg.2516adb4f1d8d6a61f83340b240d0f77.jpgIMG_20200224_185306.thumb.jpg.312268d1230c6a22aad3fb9a5d5ef031.jpg

"Cleaning" the spars

Oops,

Very flexible. Later it also appeared that they broke quickly ...

IMG_20200226_182403.thumb.jpg.511a713b88f7293d885483d362ca98ce.jpg

The plastic spars are all in waste bin.

New ones are made from toothpicks

IMG_20200226_185910.thumb.jpg.f4bfcb4edb94c74c5283dc766219c4f7.jpg

And from small bamboo sticks. They are used in plant pots. The processing of this bamboo was fairly easy

Hi Patrick.

Great work and a pleasure to follow the progress.

About the plastic spars : the minimal tension while rigging your ship would probably deform them anyway.

5 hours ago, rkwz said:

Nice work! For my plastic Victory I haven't decided yet whether to replace the spars with wood... (Was thinking maybe to glue the lines and stretch to give the illusion of tautness but personally prefer it natural).

Watching your progress with great interest 💪

Thanks everyone.

These plastic spars are really not suitable for the use in this way. Cleaning up one spar took about as long as making a new one in wood.

For someone who builds a plastic ship for the first time and chooses this model. Follow the kit's instructions for masts, spars and rigging. At first sight nothing can go wrong.

And, winter is coming to an end (actually we have not had a winter this year).
It is almost time for me to switch back to the shipyard of my wooden shipmodel.
I'm starting to miss the dust and smell of sanded wood

Have a good break from the little plastic Bounty... I will be looking forward to seeing the running rig later this year!

Will you be posting your Golden Hind on this forum too?

Thanks,
