Schooner Germania (Nova) by KeithAug - FINISHED - Scale 1:36 - 1908 / 2011

Recommended Posts

Wonderful looking wheel Keith! The amount of wood showing is so small that most would not notice that all the grain is in the same direction. I know if you had had more time say another couple of days, you would have glued up some wedges before turning the rings.

You know I just cannot resist the occasional rib.

Respectfully Michael

Thank you Steve, Chris and Michael, and thanks to everyone who has liked my build.

I went on to finish the wheel.

The brass faces and spindle for the hub were turned.

fullsizeoutput_21dc.thumb.jpeg.19f423a8851148a46a13048208fed6be.jpeg

I then turned a piece of mahogany and drilled the 10 radial holes to take the spokes. The drill is .080" diameter.

fullsizeoutput_21dd.thumb.jpeg.a614e366518c8598bcc0333934fc1750.jpeg

It is quite difficult to tell that the grain on the rim does not follow the circumference.

The hub was parted off and the spigot mounted.

fullsizeoutput_21de.jpeg.b25b022534677eaba2d74c107870bded.jpeg

I made former from a brass tube to allow me to make the spindles.

The spindles were installed and glued.

DSC00159.thumb.JPG.ba1b95892ad96d699e8eeb0dd8499a70.JPG

I finished the wheel with a coat of poly. I then used the wrong end of a .020" drill to mark the positions of the rim screws. The wrong end was ground at an angle and the wheel was mounted on the mill rotary table to make the marks.

Yeah, not disappointed!

That's every bit a nice as I'd expected and I like the brass tube as a guide.

Druxey, I tried it and this is my preferred method - thank you. I used cocktail sticks reduced from .080" diameter to .070" and coloured them with felt tip pens.

I completed the deckhouse (except the flags). This started with finishing the tops of the two wing structures.DSC09989.thumb.JPG.29378de48b5f3a7ce200eb26266bdbb1.JPGDSC09992.thumb.JPG.faa2266dfe5148e9582c257f8584f8ab.JPG

More skylights were required on the starboard wing but these were under half the size of those previously done. They were made in the same way as the ones previously completed.

DSC09998.thumb.JPG.a680fabf53d52c4334f7656ae26974c4.JPG

I now share the sad news of the demise of my magic 0.6mm  drill bit. After it had manfully completing 224 holes I took its photograph.

DSC09994.thumb.JPG.02cd4d3320f3a2e682fc9dd3d021ebb9.JPG

Two minutes later I was using it freehand to clean up another hole and the slight amount of side pressure snapped it ------- RIP.

DSC09999.thumb.jpg.e0319b2a49edf59dbc809ac8d0c714b4.jpg

The final segment to the right of the two skylights was covered in decking planks.

The bi-folding doors were then made from mahogany.

DSC00002.thumb.JPG.256b04cd12654a7cfd3beb8425e08054.JPG

They were glued in place and wire was used to simulate hinges.

DSC00007.thumb.JPG.1685519c08b30d0f14d6edce0d1d97c5.JPG

I feel that I need a diversion from the deckhouses and so will have a go at the main boom crutch next.

Hi Keith this looks amazing

I was wondering what is it you’ve placed under the skylight grills, the blackish bit? You may have already mentioned and I might have missed it.

thanks

Tom

Tom, it is just a bit of card. It is placed a few millimetres below the perspex of the window.

The next job was the wheel pedestal, Although it looks quite chunky in the photograph at model scale it is relatively small.

1753616334_ScreenShot2017-07-28at11_03_50.thumb.png.7ed1da5341f456518b0376a06228a0a3.png

The sketch was fairly easy as I had the basic dimensions from the plan and lots of detail from photos.

The body is 0.5" square and the height is 1.53"

DSC00257.thumb.jpeg.dfbfe8aaef5a9d280e57a0d05795304b.jpeg

I cut a core from oak and then clad it to crate the panels and decorative details.

DSC00172.thumb.JPG.842d3b3e4a0c86e51c5c04f2bfb0da4e.JPG

Around the top are decorative slats which I cut .020" wide on the table saw.

DSC00177.thumb.JPG.0deb57070062cffb9669a2090e84733c.JPG

A hole was drilled to take the wheel spindle and the wheel was temporarily mounted.

DSC00186.thumb.JPG.7bea51c9fddf675828114fca7e53ac4c.JPG

Instruments are mounted on the top fo the pedestal. Earlier photographs of Germania feature less instruments. I based the instruments on later photos.  The surrounds are cut from square aluminium tube, the faces are black card filled over with 2 part epoxy to simulate the screen.

The pedestal hasn't been varnished as yet.

 Wouldn't we all.........ROAD TRIP!

Mark Taylor could be the designated driver as he's on the west coast, he could pick me up here in Michigan (I'd be more than happy to chip in for gas) then stop and pick up Gary and swing north to get druxey and Michael. RG, where do you fit in on the map? Wouldn't want to forget you since this was your idea. :) Keith, you may wanna warn the Missus.

Problem is you would also need to charter and aeroplane as well because Keith lives in the south of England.

Michael, we're taking the Magic Bus. It'll cross the Atlantic with ease and because it's the Magic Bus we'll all have our hair again and the girls will find us beautiful and charming.

Well.. no matter then.  The magic bus will work.  Here I was thinking how I'd fit everyone in my car as the back seats came out and went away a long time ago.  In case you wonder.. it's a PT Cruiser and no one older than 10 could have ever fit in them. So it became my hauling machine.
