USS Fletcher by RGL - FINISHED - Tamiya - 1/350 - PLASTIC

Recommended Posts

I saw this upgrade from 5 Star models when I was watching @Jack12477, 's build of a Fletcher.

http://steelnavy.net/5StarFletcherUpgrade350FBustelo.html

Then I saw a photo on the net of some oilcanning IMG_8359.thumb.JPG.bb075e59d8b027e2f900b852eecdc7c4.JPG

So I thought, challenging, detailed (seriously the hardest PE set I've seen to date), I can beat it up, and it's small so mistakes won't be so vIMG_E8459.thumb.JPG.c0f8b4e1458170ca3eb62c522a1d5a92.JPGisible.

As it's a US Ship there are a lot of photos but this one will be strait out of the boxes.

Interesting timing -- I was just working on my family tree yesterday and came across a distant cousin who served a long stint aboard USS Grayson (DD-435), a member of the preceding Gleaves class. He transferred to Grayson after doing one patrol on USS Plunger (SS-179).

Nice choice Greg.

Looks like there will be more brass than plastic on this build.

Can't  help but compare your pictures of the turrets and other cast parts with those sold by Model Monkey

I know that if you start buying more stuff like gun directors, turrets, etc that it isn't really out of the box anymore, but there is so much available.

If you were building a square bridge you could even have an interior!

Here is his whole 1/350 catalog. Destroyers are on the right column.

Going back to hide in my corner but looking forward to your build as always.

I'll be in for watching this one.   I hope that at 13 inches long, you're eyes don't cross as the brass work has to be really tiny.

how long would it take to get this grunged up?

It would seem that it would depend on where the ship was located and how active she was.

Warmer waters should make marine growth a bigger problem. Sitting at anchor or at a dock rather than being underway would also promote a better marine growth environment I would think.

Greg,

When I look at the pictures from the Fletcher, and I look at your primed hull, I see a difference in the way the hull plating has been lined up in the vertical. On your model it is stepped, on the real life ship the plates sides are a single line from bottom to top, but for a few at the bow ... will you change that or stick to the hull plating layout from the kit

Dumb question (probably): how is the added thickness of the brass plating accounted for without making the superstructure out of scale in its dimensions? Or is the ‘out of scale’ negligible? (though, at 1:350, even small changes would be significant at full scale)
