Old Collingwood Posted April 8, 2019 Author Share #31 Posted April 8, 2019 I think I may have found a wartime photo of my late farther, he used to tell me he also worked on Short Stirlings at a shadow base of RAF Marham called Downham Market I assume posting where he was needed as there where only about 3 miles away from each other, he told me he was in number 1 group and at the time(1943) the active squadron was 218sqn flying Shorts and Lancs. You do realize that the Mossie was both faster and more maneuverable than the Spitfire? It drove the Spit pilots nuts when they found out that there was a bomber that could do that. But to give myself some me time I am going to try to do a one off airshow this year, just need to save some pennies to get me there being my number one passion - planes it would be a good break and put me in a good frame of mind to build my mossie later. An incredible machine and so elegant in flight: Yves Those are Gorgeous pics - Thank you so much Yves, yep my late farther who used to work on them as well as others, told me they were basically two merlins with a lightweight body - the merlins in fact had a tendency to be to powerful for the frame, they had considered tweaking the engines for more horse power but there was a worry it would twist the frame, so they left it at just a spitfire eater. Old Collingwood Posted January 21, 2020 Author Share #45 Posted January 21, 2020 Not sure if I have mentioned - but I have the Tamiya rattle cans (Acylic) to do the outside camo paintwork (got them in gloss - to aid the decals) and also a Tamiya rattle can flat top coat, I have also got a a jar of each colour for any brush touch ups, same with the interior colour (jars). I hope to try masking for the two tone camo using the Blue Tack method to get a soft demarcation line, I have seen excellent jobs done this way. OC. I have been looking up lately myself with a pair of binoculars the AF and Navy have been doing a lot of testing in the area of late with missiles.I saw one cover the whole length of the horizon(as far as your eyes can see) in 3-4 minutes all white no tail of course. Sounds like a slow target rather than a missile. Every missile I ever saw, (Admittedly not many) was much faster. Old Collingwood Posted February 5, 2020 Author Share #57 Posted February 5, 2020 So as the pearl is near finished minus the crew and Jolly Roger flag I'm waiting on, I'm trying to get my head around my painting schedule on the mosi, as i have mainly all tamiya rattle cans for the bulk of the paintwork and a few eqv tins for brush touch ups and small paint details. My concern is not being able to spray indoors and if the weather is the same as we have had of late - rain, that will stop me painting outside, mind you I guess I will have enough sub assemblies and interior work that I can use my hairy stick and tin paints. Cant wait to start. OC. Now the Pearl is finished - I will give myself a couple of days of then - I will make a start on the Mosi, I have all the stuff I need to build her I think so it should be interesting and quite different from the pearl.
