Hi Nils

It’s really enjoyable watching your masterpieces come together, this one being no exception.  The care that you’re taking to get the right templates for the ribs is a perfect example for us to learn and follow.

Nice job!

Cheers

Many thanks Geert and Bruce,

Geert,

it realy seems to work... , there will be a sectional bulkhead in combination with the two first half-frames I`m working on this monent. Behind it the main mast will be situated, and in front of that bulkhead the cabin fits in, with entry from above

Bruce,

I`m pleased that you are enjoying the build. The little one is so sweet, he`s laying at my feet at the desk in my hobby room, although he still "leaks",

sometimes also on the carpet, if we`re not fast enough to recognise what he has in mind.

You will be trained soon enough.

You say making the ribs  is 'tricky', I say it is impressive. Well done.

What finish will you use on the inside of the boat?

Hi Bruce,

I intend to install the things that were necessary for this type of working boat in general, such as :

Cockpit planked floors, well-box for live fish, motor well, both access form above. Diesel tuck-tuck motor (Dummy) 1-2 cylinders, gear clutch, reverse gear, with large flywheel, machine exhaust

Cabin with 2 berths, locker, ladder, cast iron oven with exhaust over cabin roof, fresh air vent, perhaps a small foldable table.

As it is a workboat, it will mainly be held in varnished wood

The motor pics I borowed from the web.

I intend to to work some outcuts into the main cockpit floor to enable view to the stone Ballast beneath, and perhaps into deck /cabin to view underneath /resp inside cabin

Unfortunately I have no other finish details or plans  (pics) available at this time, other than the enclosed....

An improvement for taking off inner lapstrake contours of the hullplanking......

Yesterday had a vist by a freind and fellow MSW member, we meet now and then to exchange thoughts on our builds and general building techniqes...

Many thanks to Siggi52 and appreciations, for introducing his contour gauge that he lent to me, to try it out, and that will make the production of the interior hull ribs with improved contour quality, vs. my humble methode shown here earlier

I tried it out today and am very pleased with the results. It also saves time.

Just catching up on your build Nils - it is coming along beautifully.  I am really drawn to lapstrake boats.  The lines accentuate the shape of the hull and are so graceful.  The carpenters contour gauge is a great idea and one that I will remember.  Looking forward to future updates.

Hi there Nils -- I've been limping along several days with only a provisional computer and so have missed your latest updates.  Great work on the Zeesboot, which shows off your usual high quality craftsmanship.

And let me also say that you are very lucky to have your new little friend -- a handsome fellow indeed!  I've been pining for a dog more than I can say, but Mrs W insists we can't have another until we leave the Prairie.  Needless to say, I am green with envy.  Make sure to include him in many of your updates!

Cheers,

Thank you Martin,

I`ve been working on the front bulkhead  its seperating the cabin area from the compartment ( as a locker for anchor chain, ropes and other things that need to be stowed out of the way )

Getting further on with the ribs...

shaping, saw-cutting, a bit fairing to fit, glueing, I get about 4 per day placed.

The lead weight I still had, it was orignaly intended as an internal weight block for a schooner some years ago.

Hi Nils, glad you posted in my log otherwise I wouldn't have known about your new Zeesboot project, quite the scale, I'm sure she'll be stunning and very interesting construction.  Also congratulation on the puppy, we seem to have got ours both at the same time!  Casper looks a real cutie!

Cheers,

Jason

Welcome to the build Jason,

glad to have you on board, and many thanks for looking in and catching up.

Little Caspar is doing so well, one can see the improvement and also the growth from week to week (yesterday 10 weeks, since birth). He is still "leaking" a bit, but also that will be soon overcome...

I built the standplate from several wood formates and stained them in Cherry, but yet without a silk varnish coating and also the two pedestals again produced and shortend from old candle holders. Internal M4 spindles with nuts and washers hold the model safely through the keel ("backbone")

The hight of the pedestals allows the centerboard to be swung down 90°

I`m intending to build in a dummy tucker motor (1 cylinder glow head diesel), but except for my preliminary hand scetch, I`m still looking for a suitable marine engine I can adopt dimensions from. Does anybody have an idea where to find that information ?

A classical book (for Germany) on this subject is:

DITTMER, R., LIECKFELD, G., ROMBERG, F. (1911): Motoren und Winden für die See- und Küstenfischerei.- 2 Teile, 140+102 p., München/Berlin (R. Oldenbourg).

The library of the Technical University of Berlin has a copy that I have seen. It doesn't seem to have been digitised yet.

Then there is:

ROMBERG, F. (1912): Der Ölmotor im deutschen Seefischereibetriebe.- Jb. Schiffbautechn. Ges., 13: 173-263.

Also no digital version identified.

Wolfgang Rudolph has also written a series of articles about boat engines as used around the German Baltic coast:

And:

SIEBOLDS, ., BLOCK, . (1907): Die Einführung des Motors in die deutsche Segelfischerei.- 148 p., (reprint 2010, Salzwasserverlag).

As a reprint is being sold, Google does not list any digitised version that may exist somewhere.

Many early motors came from Sweden (e.g. Bolinder) or Denmark, where the motorisation of fishing-boats began earlier than in Germany. If you search e.g. for 'Bolinder engine', you will get some images.

Beautiful Nils, love the photos of the outside of the hull, very nice clinker planking.  How exposed will the engine be?  That's a project in its own right I suspect, sadly I'm not very knowledgeable about boat engines to help answer your question, think Wefalck has done that though!

good afternoon Eberhard,

many thanks for your kind suggestion to reference literature for early marine engines. I`ll try to see if the one or other publication can be made available, and trust to find something helpful there.

Hi Jason,

Thanks for your words.

There will be a shaft giving view from above, where the engine will be mounted in....
