HMS Victory 1805 by DarkAngel - Corel - 1/98

I used card stock for my hinges.  A pounce wheel works wonders for dimpling the strapping.

1:64 Cat Esther (17th Century Dutch Merchant Ships)

On the building slip: 1:72 French Ironclad Magenta (original shipyard plans)

Build Update

Hull Cannon Port's

I've been using my time to focus on the port openings. Getting them square and somoothing off the layers of planking inside to mount the inner port linings. Once the port linings are in, they really make the port's look nice and square on the inside. :)

Cutters and Launches

When I purchased the 'Wasa' from a friend I also picked up two kits for the HMS Suprise Launches, these are 1:75 scale and 123mm long. I'm putting one together to see if it will work with the 1:98 scale of the HMS Victory. I'm thinking of adding more oars and seats to help modify the scale in line with 1:98. It will fit on the Victory, but there's a few mods to be made. I'm looking for reference pic's to see how the larger boats look and if they differ in anyway from the smaller 'cutters'.

First look at the top deck with hull

Check out the pic's... I need to trim the side of the top deck a little to get it flush with the hull planking, however it can be removed still while planking the hull. I put it back in place so I can check the hull ports on the other side of the ship. Also a laser level also proves to be really useful here for lining up the layers on each side of the hull :)

Question: Has anyone on this build trimmed down the first bulkhead height to reduce the camber of the bow's top deck ?... it just looks a little off to me as pictured above.

Thanks for the info Wallace :)

Hatch mod as promised for Wallace

I spent some time today playing around with a prototype hatch. Luckily for me when I trimmed down the deck planks to about 3mm I had lots of offcuts in my wood pile. I used some of these to frame a hatch with up to 2 layers in an effort to remove the indent around the htch when I glued the surround on. Then after supergluing the wood to metal, it was a matter of trimming down the edges and filing down to create a flush surface.

I tried engraving lines into the metal to simulate planking lines to match the hull, however these are not as good as I anticipated. I'm thinking of coating the top of the hatch with glue, allowing to harden and cure, then cutting plank lines with a sharp blade and painting over.

Here's some pics of the results (without the last step mentioned above) with an emphasis on being flush with the hull.

HMS Suprise launch 1:75 scale

Here's where I am up to with one of two boat kits I acquired :)

Do you guys think it could work on  the HMS  Victory 1:98 scale ? As mentioned previously it's 123 mm long and fits on the beams above the lower deck.

Port Update

Here's an update of the cannon ports with colour !

Also I'm scraping the top deck again as I like the grayish color the wood is going without the oil finish :) I'm also polishing the handrail where it would get used alot.

HMS Victory 1805 ships boats

sourced from:  Anatomy of the Victory (Peter Goodwin) p.77

The Victory carries six boats

  1. Launch:  34 ft (10.36 m) or 1:98 scale (10.5 cm) general working boat carries stores, marines, guns, gunpowder etc... can be fitted with an 18 lb cannonade at the bow
  2. Admirals barge: 28 ft (8.53 m) or 1:98 scale (8.75 cm) to carry Admiral, high ranking Officers and Dignitaries to other ships or ashore.
  3. Officers pinnace: 32 ft (9.75 m) or 1:98 scale (9.9 cm) carrying officers and also used for amphibious landings.
  4. Cutter: 24 ft (7.32 m) or 1:98 scale (7.5 cm) general working boat
  5. Yawl or Cutter: 24 ft (7.32 m) or 1:98 scale (7.5 cm) general working boat
  6. Cutter: 18 ft (5.48 m) or 1:98 scale (5.6 cm) carrying Officers and their baggage, also dispatches between ships

So for my 2x Launches that are 12.3 cm... I'll shorten them appropriately for the 34 ft Launch and the 28 ft Admirals barge by cutting a section out of the middle of each before hulling.

Wood carving

Today I thought I would try something new :) Wood carving with my new Dremel. It's really small scale and I chose something intricate, the entryway awning and decorations for the HMS Victory.

Anyway here's a work in progress

20190825_202001.jpg

I found some black buffalo horn, which carves much better than the grainy soft wood I had been using...

Hull port liners and Plan

Working on strengthening the other side of the hull by building a framework of port liners with a fresh load of timber (coffee stjrrers). Also completed deck planking for Upper Gun deck finally as fixed permanently into place. I've been doing further research on the plan layout for the Upper Gun deck and discovered the Corel guide is out of whack again. So I may end up redoing the stairs and hatches there. I'll draw up a diagram of what I have discovered along with how the mast fits in to the design.

Where are you getting your info from sir? Are you using the Longridge book?

I have been studying countless photo's of the HMS Victory in Portsmouth, and cross referencing with other scale models :)

Here's a plan I devised that should work with the Corel 1:98 HMS Victory dimensions.

I'd be interested in any comments, feedback, comparisons etc...

This Pic below I found on the internet is the next level below, which is identical except for the wood that is mounted on the floor under the mast. The Upper Gun Deck doesn't have the wooden platform under the mast I think... I may be wrong however and this pic may actually be of the Upper Gun Deck.

Thats a great comparison, my plan is a scale drawing for the Corel 1:98 HMS Victory... so you can take measurements off the plan and apply to the stock Corel kit :)

I'm not sure if those double gratings are correct, as I've seen double gratings on the vertical axis not the horizontal one. If you look carefully at the second pic above you can see a seam on the grating on the vertical.

Did a teardown of the upper gun deck stairs and hatches... going with my plan above. Will post a pic when the deck doesn't look like a demolition site :)

Also started planking the hull again, to match the other side of the hull. Doing about 2 planks per day at the moment, may increase to 4 later.

Adding Brass brackets

Here's a look under the Quarterdeck at some extra modifications I have been taking inspired by real pics of the HMS Victory.

🚩  WARNING !!! This is very time consuming, took me about 1 hour to hand drill 1 x  hole in brass using a hand drill and a 0.9 mm bit.  May be better with chuck attachment for 0.9 mm drill bit in dremel !

For the Brass brackets

Extra equip needed

  1. 0.8 mm 3mm brass pins with round head
  2. small vice
  3. 3 oz hammer
  4. Precise hand drill and 0.9 mm drill bit
  5. Strong long nose pliers (I used my leatherman surge)  with coffee stirrer (to avoid pliers damaging ship)
  6. Superglue
  7. bent nose tweezers

method for crafting L brackets

  • I hammered one brass cannon wheel rod flat about 5mm on one side
  • drilled 2 x 0.9 mm holes in the flat surface
  • bent it into an "L" shape in my vice with the 3 oz hammer.
  • snipped off the rod allowing another 5 mm on the non flat side
  • put back in the vice and flattened the other side before drilling 2 more 0.9 mm holes

method for attaching

  • position bracket in place (I used a small clip to firmly attach)
  • mark holes in post and roof beam
  • remove bracket
  • drill holes at about 3 mm deep using 0.9 mm drill bit (I just did one in each side of the L bracket)
  • test depth with brass round head pins and remove
  •  dab a little superglue on holes and where bracket will go
  • attach bracket over superglue and add brass round 0.8 mm x 3 mm pins one at a time into holes
  • use needle nose pliers with coffee stirrer on reverse side to protect ship and apply pressure to sink brass pin firmly into hole
  • Repeat for other brass pin
  • drill more holes through the post through the pre drilled holes in the bracket
  • add brass round 0.8 mm x 3 mm pin into hole, push in with needle nose pliers as above
  • done... now for the other 3 brackets and 12 more pins !
  • blacken brass by painting on 'Liver of Sulphur' solution and allow to bracket and pins to dry and blacken after attached.

pic shows 2 blackets in with 4 brass 0.8 mm x 3 mm pins each. (Need to do other side with 2 more brackets)

Extra supplies ordered

Good news, a new batch of goodies has been sourced and ordered as follows

(for the upper gun deck, the stock cannons look a bit small)

  • 209532343.jpeg Billing Boats - Double Block 10mm (10)

(incl 20 brass pulley wheels for rope which I'm going to mount inside various wooden posts, not using plastic surrounds)

HMS Victory Cannons 1805

Does anyone have the breakdown of the various cannons onboard the HMS Victory, like sizes of carriages and cannons ?

The issue with making an exact scale reproduction for parts is that the whole ship needs to be in the right proportions, like the width of the decks etc. So I have found I need to go by 'eye' too, like when I made the plan for the Upper Gun Deck. I couldn't fit two grates in each section as the original HMS Victory had, neither could I have the right number of grids in each grate... but making it more accurate than the stock model is satisfying. Like having bigger cannon balls that look like they actually fit in the cannons.

Conversion table below ( I work in metric ) and we'll see how the cannons fit the 30mm ones I purchased.

Cannon sizes

12 Pounder

  • Long:  Barrel length (A 9' or 2.74m) 1:98 scale 27.95 mm
  • Medium:  Barrel length (A 8'6" or 2.62m) 1:98 scale 26.73 mm
  • Short:  Barrel length (A 7'6" or 2.13m) 1:98 scale 21.73 mm

Results

  • Quarterdeck
  1. can use stock cannons with carriages for 12 x Short 12 pounders
  2. need 2 x medium 12 pounders using 30 mm cannons trimmed to about 27 mm

  • Upper Gun Deck
  1. need 14 x long 12 pounders using 30 mm cannons trimmed to about 28 mm

Purchased 12 x 30 mm cannons, need another 4 pack... maybe I'll get more for the short 12 lb'ers and cut them down... that way all the barrel's will be the same diameter :)

4 hours ago, Wallace said:

Here you go sir. This info is from the "Anatomy of the Ship"  The 100 Gun Ship Victory book by John McKay:

Quarterdeck: Twelve 12 pounders (short), two 12 pounders (medium) and two 58 pound carronades

Upper deck:  Twenty eight 12 pounders (long)

Middle deck: Twenty eight 24 pounders (long)

Info taken from pages 41 thru 43. I strongly recommend you get your hands on this book, it will help you find all those small details to make the model look better. Here is a link to it for you.

Here is an image of the gun carriage and relevant info taken from C Nepean Longridges book. The scale of his model was 1:48, so it was twice the size of the 1:98 Corel model. By knowing that you can adjust these values accordingly:

I hope this helps you out.

Mark

Cool, thanks Mark :) that's just what I was looking for.

Kauri pine

I have sourced some old weathered kauri pine floorboard sections that are probably 100 years old. These may be a bit cracked but I'm sure to find some sections ok for milling into cannon carriages... or other fittings.

Lanterns

Also going to start building lanterns to house the new micro SMD lights I'm getting... probably 4 mm high to hang off the roof beams.

I like it. I may "steal" some of this to make mine look decent. Nice job.

Lol... it's not stealing if it is freely given. Think of it as a 'Blessing'... :)

Raising the Poop deck aka 'The Slaughter House'

The scale figures and the ships wheel doesn't fit under the 20 mm high roof of the Poop deck from the Quarterdeck, and I remember reading in a blog here someone raised it by 5 mm or so by blocking up the roof deck supports. I'm going to consider this an option instead of trimming down the ships wheel to fit underneath and directly in front of the mast located there... (as the original HMS Victory)

I don't think there are any issues with raising the Poop deck by 5mm or so... what do you guys think ?

I'm doing a complete rebuild of the rear cabins and stern section so that part won't be an issue :)
