Craig, yes I knew the place.  Whenever I got down to MacDill AFB, I'd pop over there at least once a trip. Found a few bargains and several oldie but goodies. And his stuff migrated all over the country. I bought kits up in Jersey with his store stamp on them. Probably consignment sales from passed away modelers. A good place to hang out for a few hours. :D

We had a few shops like that back in the day. Owner comes in, fires up a coffee pot and opens for business. Spent many a happy hour in places like that socializing and shopping. 👍

Two of those we had were like that, more of a club than a shop, and the owner/staff were knowledgeable and had time to chew the fat, now it's in, pay and out, quite  impersonal 😔

Overnight was sufficient for the Molotow ink to thoroughly dry, so I installed the bumpers. They look pretty decent I think and much much better than the sink-mark-ridden chrome plated bumpers that came inside the kit.

PS: Molotow ink applied from the actual pen will not dry overnight. It's only because I applied it in very light coats using an airbrush. Molotow ink is very very slow to dry from the pen. Days, maybe even weeks.

Where I used to live in South Jersey, there were four or five hobby shops when I left in 2009. Only train place left is Sattler's, in I think Westmont, NJ. It's been around since WW 2. The other model train place is in Piscataway, the Model RR Shop. There is also AAA Hobbies, Internet selling as MegaHobbies, in Oaklyn. There are others, but I don't remember the names anymore.

Here in western NC, we have places like Michaels, HobbyLobby and HobbyTown USA. There is one "hobby shop" in Hendersonville, with random hours and minimal stock outside of some Lionel Trainsets and the owner's knife collection. Needless to say, I do a lot of shopping online.:(

At the danger of sounding like a dinosaur, online shopping is, in my opinion, part of the problem, but on the other hand is also something of a saviour as well. I suppose it is progress, and it isn't just model shops, in our town it's been most small independent stores😟

I feel like I must live in a time warp or something. I have a model railroad hobby store a couple of blocks from my house. Years ago it was almost exclusively railroad but now days almost all of the railroad stuff is upstairs. At least half of the downstairs is RC cars, with the rest being mixed woods, paints and the normal construction stuff. They have a closet like room off to one side that has the plastic kits, kind of like the curtained off area of the old video stores that contained the porno movies. We have a larger Hobby Town franchise across town that has a fairly large plastic section and huge paint selection but again at least half the store seems geared to the RC cars. We have a number of others that are further away and I think at least two of them that are still in business are still considered railroad stores. I HATE driving down to the Seattle metro area, so it has been a number of years since I have been to those stores.

Your Ferrari is looking better and better Craig, truck tires and all.:) Just think of it as an off road Ferrari.

You are a lucky man Lou 😎

I'm willing to bet there is an off road Ferrari in the pipeline as Porsche and Jaguar have SUV's

Craig, the  chrome looks loads better with the molotow ink, proper shiny metalwork 🙂

It's a mixed bag for me... shopping online or the local hobby shop.  It's survived by adding things like bicycles and maintenance.  They've been expanding their shop with more plastic kits while cutting back on the wooden ships. Also adding RC car stuff along with a still large amount of flying model airplane things.  The pandemic has been a boon to their business.  Usually a short line out front and the inside at capacity with distancing, etc.

That could be interesting. I think Enzo would roll over in his grave!

Looks great Craig. Kind of odd seeing it next to that giant motorcycle statue though.

Well we still have Emil up there in Renton.... The last true model shop in this part of the country..... but it's the other side of Seattle for you.....

What's left is game figure type stores, even RC has gone away down here, trains, as little as five years ago we had three shops, they all closed within 30 days of each other....

Online is the wave of the future as soon as they get the delivery methods sorted..... The old social ways of the hobby are dying, aside from IPMS, all the independent clubs have died off as well.

All about making the quick buck..... Cheaper, (relatively) more profitable, and less work for them....

The understatement of the day.

This past week marked the 41st year since my father passed away, Feb 19, 1980. I was thinking about how much has changed since he passed. If he were suddenly alive today, he would not recognize much of what he would see or hear. When I grew up, my Dad would drive daily down to a specific corner in downtown Tampa to buy the evening newspaper, The Tampa Times, hot off the press. In the mornings, Our daily Tampa Tribune, would be waiting for us in our driveway. Today, Tampa no longer even has a daily newspaper. Both are gone, a thing of the past.

We can rearrange them as time goes by.

Don't do anything based on my comment. They are both fantastic models in their own right, you want to put them where you can see them easily. It's not like my measly half a dozen 1/24th cars that not only are the same scale but from the same time period and form of racing. (Except for my Mini Cooper that is a copy of my real car in 1/24th).
