i copied this idea and it never worked for me,

i have no idea what was supplied to me  as 60/40 solder

since then i have changed it and the flux, and getting much better results IMG_4798.thumb.JPG.15829a82db82fe8a11cd7a84b3776bd8.JPG

will post photo later  of what i am using

That looks really tidy mate  and also far stronger than any glue.

Re: the use of CA for photoetch, for bigger assemblies/longer joints, after bending and tacking the assembly together, I run a bead of thick CA along the inside (not visible) side of the joint and sprinkle the joint with baking powder before the CA cures.  The baking powder causes the CA to set quickly and form a filet, making a more solid structural bond.

Also, those GLS sets can be pretty challenging (IMHO), so don’t beat yourself up if you find them difficult.  Looks to me like you’re getting the hang of it.

Cheers,

good morning everyone thank you for the likes and comments

MAIN DECK

all the decks are brass and sit on top of the kit plastic ones (after all the surface detail has been removed

IMG_4816.thumb.JPG.74042a3f79c750e4ebcae583debf336f.JPG

this is the main deck 18 inches long, to save metal, various parts have to be removed these areas are covered over later, by the forecastle and bridge

first all the rivets have to be knocked through from the other side (about 500 on this piece) marks are provided to show where they are and a centre punch is used to do the work

IMG_4651.thumb.JPG.08d9e10cafabaf9959b46cbcc787e264.JPG

IMG_4809.thumb.JPG.ad577f069883e58a18faab1b4acf28d3.JPG

the sides are then folded upwards and soldered in place, im not sure ca would do this very well

IMG_4806.thumb.JPG.b5f4918779dde7a266f99849ed8c4f7e.JPGIMG_4805.thumb.JPG.657823d284774f88de80091362a86e56.JPG

and then two long strips as long as the whole piece are soldered against the folded piece to represent rivet lines i did use ca for this

Kevin, it's looking great.  I feel for your soldering frustration as I've had the same when trying to solder tiny bits.  Regarding heat transfer ruining made joints, when I was soldering plumbing pipe back in the day I would occasionally put a damp rag around the made joint while soldering something nearby.  I don't know if this technique transfers to PE world but a scaled down version might be worth trying on some scrap.

Thanks for sharing the build.

Good afternoon Steve

using a lower heat/melting point solder has taken most of the problem away, god knows what that solder was that was supplied by Ebat was, but for me it nearly destroyed my williness to even start the build, im much happier now, another update tonight or in the morning

the change of solder has eased a mysterious rash across my hands as well, no i dont wear gloves

Heat transfer to a broad area is best avoided by using a soldering iron that has a larger capacity to recover energy/heat. I learned this long ago by trial and error and watching guys that were very good with solder. A great soldering iron makes a HUGE difference. The longer that iron must stay in contact with the material being soldered, the more problems one will have with unwanted heat transfer. Secondly, there are specialized aluminum heat sink clips that are on the market of various shapes, size, and descriptions for solder work. Having some of those handy for soldering work is a game changer.

Like these: https://www.jpmsupply.com/Soldering-Heat-Sink-Elenco-ST-23-p/92135.htm?gclid=CjwKCAjw7uPqBRBlEiwAYDsr18OJC8B7Q5bj0cL5KCxt0xElwahf-xJoLbkK2w5Sn76s8OuJMQRawBoCNxYQAvD_BwE&click=2

good evening everyone

not much more i can do to the main deck for the time being, i will need to do some/lots of hull work before that will be put into position, at least for now it has something to sit on

so its back to the bridge

Bridge rework

not so much re-work, but i bought a new set, i had to as the last one was never going to be presentable, however the bits will be kept for another project i have in mind

although not perfect, i am much happier with the outcome,

the radar tower is at present from the old set, as the replacement has to be remade, all in all a recovery, for me anyway

thank you, they are better, they feel sturdier, but could be a better join all round, and some places could do with more tidying up,

After soldering pieces together, if there is too much solder remaining around the joint I sometimes use a hobby knife or a small dental tool with a chisel-shaped tip to carve away the unwanted solder. Be careful not to gouge into the brass and create a scratch.

Then to remove more of the remaining solder to produce a very smooth surface I use a fine wire brush in a motor tool (Dremel). The wire brush removes the soft solder quickly and just polishes the brass. However, it is very effective at removing the solder, so be careful that you don't remove too much! You can also use an ordinary steel wire brush, and even a brass wire brush for less aggressive polishing.

One thing to remember is that when the hot solder flows over the surface of the brass some of the tin actually dissolves into the brass forming a tin-brass alloy. In this way the solder "welds" itself to the brass surface. But it is the softer solder between the brass parts that "glues" the pieces together.

The wire brush will remove the soft solder build up on the brass but it will not remove solder that has dissolved into the brass - nothing will. Even after you have removed all the solder there will still be a tin "stain" on the brass surface. To avoid this you need to apply the solder and the soldering iron to inside surfaces where possible.

****

To control heat flow so you don't unsolder parts when adding new parts just wrap wet cotton balls around the parts you want to protect. Use alligator clips to hold the cotton in place. Water flows to contact the metal surfaces and absorbs a tremendous amount of heat as it evaporates. This makes water a much better heat sink than almost anything else, and it is easy to clean up.

Sorry for the long time between posts, lol it takes ages to make something to show

my biggest concern is the phots im posting make the build look very messy,(the brass is showing the stains for being handled), im sure i will find something to clean it up closer to being painted

the bridge work continues

i dont actually know the name for these panels,  i quess it would be bridge wings,

my soldering has greatly improved, but i still make the occasional mistake and still lots to learn

also remounted the brackets for the gunmount platforms

again sorry for the photos, i will need to rethink how to shoot something as bright as this is

Its all part of Kev's journey, bit like going to the dark side, but with the lights on

All the best

Very fine work mate  she is looking lovely  - we all need to  remember  your are soldering the joints not simply gluing  (that in itself is amazing)

good morning everyone

Post birthday celebrations, and no alcohol involved

Bridge supports

two trpes are given in the etch set one of them for the Bluebell, there are a lot of choices to be made, and i can see it being easy to make a mistake

the legs are braced from behind, a week ago this would have been a nightmare for me, but with the right flux and lower temp solder it is working for me
