Chesapeake Bay Crabbing Skiff by Duanelaker - FINISHED - Midwest Products - Small

I am doing the rigging on my HMS Bounty Jolly Boat and needed a break so I broke this kit out.  It was not wrapped and I believe was used, the wood was dry and warped but I figured it would still be fun.4BFA413F-FB2A-4E89-B54C-12DE581C983C.thumb.jpeg.324c6668d91bf3697f6779d949eac13c.jpeg

So I will say the instructions that came with the kit are incredible compared to the AL kit I had done.  Here are a few more picture.  I set the jig up and followed the steps.426CD1F2-BDCD-4C55-98E5-488DF8ADD90E.thumb.jpeg.163abb37a82c70b1d7be40fc44cafd40.jpeg0CFC87D8-E84F-4909-B9D4-D29977FE9A60.thumb.jpeg.be9a1c3b1b7c9a3a7ec799570d316451.jpeg

Because the kit was so old, dry and warped it was not easy since it was so brittle.  I was careful not to force, but I really need to learn patience and to slow down.

I found that the CA glue that had come in a different kit I had purchased was old and not working well.  But I had bought some DAP glue that was called rapid fuse that worked well.  I also used title bond where I could.

I also stained a few pieces in hopes it would strengthen the weak wood...maybe!  AEAA80F7-DB05-4B88-BF69-6B59C85D37D1.thumb.jpeg.aea7eca7394a0047ade8e0e76b80b2bc.jpegE3819FF0-6FCD-4DE8-A557-F175BB48DCE4.thumb.jpeg.a5444181e7172b6e6025ac4a783c56b3.jpeg

Any ideas regards the best way to keep the basswood blocks nice and tight on the bow and stern per the instructions?35569877-3DE6-4D44-9E2F-E60A00667B1B.thumb.jpeg.2c1b45b20e234b61c290beef161acf90.jpeg

I’m thinking a little filler and sanding will make this look nice!

I don’t like they way the bow was distorted when I was glueing the side panels on the boat, I was hoping to fix this with all-purpose putty (bondo).  Is this advisable?  It seems to have worked on a solid hull I was working on a while back, but this is much thinner basswood.  I then plan on painting over it (which I have little experience with).  Any help would be appreciated.

Use a modeling putty, not bondo! The bondo is much harder than the wood and would be difficult to sand without cutting into the wood. When you go to paint the model, seal it with shellac or varnish, before painting, if you will be using acrylic paints. Do a search in the forum, there was a thread a little while back , on the various methods of sealing recommended.

Thank you Ron!  That makes a lot of sense about the filler being harder than the wood.  Would Durham’s modeling putty be adequate?

I ordered Elmer’s wood putty per someone else’s recommendation in another post so while waiting for that I made the tiller.

Recently received my wood putty and I must admit I really like it!  Easy to work with and dries quick, I’ve put two coats on and hopefully after sanding I will only need one more.725B657D-4B9E-4952-BA88-17877509FCC1.thumb.jpeg.e36d70cddadaa22374eb778984f4b6b6.jpegBF5DEFBC-49B5-436F-975E-267EE635790B.thumb.jpeg.434fef08a619f1f96b9c08d19764b253.jpeg

Thanks Richard!  I haven’t done much painting (except for out of a can when I was a kid), I bought an air brush and I’m hoping for the best.  I’m nervous but I guess practice makes perfect, or mistakes make learning opportunities...

Having three consecutive build logs might not be the best idea, but I like that it is a good record for what I have done, and I really want newbies to see the not so skilled try their hand at this hobby.  I am really loving this wood filler!08A98639-C4C3-4045-A5E2-9FD549DFCA18.thumb.jpeg.42f7efdba5cc1ef7643e4a232a61ccc3.jpeg29C6D330-63D1-4C94-9DED-334F184F2AD2.thumb.jpeg.93f0ebe97642c2cd4907ab6f055fd353.jpeg

  • 1 month later...

Well I put some primer down and also built the display stand.  My air brush abilities are limited and I feel like I need a air brush with a wider spray pattern...I will have to check my tips.  I’m thinking I let it dry, sand it then spray color on it.  CE56AA23-6BA7-4A11-B1A4-DF813280EADC.thumb.jpeg.05de6403d9300a1726c8aa9e4f21b703.jpeg13D87D8C-95D7-49E7-98CE-5194E410FF90.thumb.jpeg.4c811e9f77ec3496bbe55a2794afe687.jpeg9AFBC569-D437-45CB-9F20-521B0AAAAA33.thumb.jpeg.5b6a7c6baccc74195e5b9fc7b2994e13.jpeg

So I’m alittle disgusted and sad...hoping someone might be able to give me some advice since I’m new to paint.  I’m assuming I would be best off letting this mess dry for a few days and sanding as clean as possible, then reapply white, and then do the red?

im not sure what happened, but I should have stopped...it went on oddly thin and was not sticking well, but I kept painting 😔 I didn’t realize how it bled through until it dried enough for me to take the tape off.  Lesson hopefully learned....7A8DC59B-A8AC-4D60-912E-E3C6D3F48EEA.thumb.jpeg.09a20c81e50ae12dace43e0f0255a497.jpeg80982ECA-FC0C-412D-8BE2-A59062DF688B.thumb.jpeg.dad8c5dc4884d901207d19273f0b95d4.jpeg

I would probably sand that down and reapply. I don't think the white paint will cover the red very well. Something you can try when you mask that line is paint over the edge of the tape with a clear paint to seal the edge of the mask.

Jeff - I had actually applied white paint over the tape prior to spraying the red, do you think I needed to wait for it to dry first?  If you notice too that the red didn’t seem to fill the gaps?  You can see the white along the edges and the inside edges of the keel.  I feel like I did something wrong with the mixture of the paint, maybe I thinned it too much?

I’m also not a paint master so double check this, but I’ve done the same but instead of clear (which is frequently mentioned) used the same color as is under the tape (in this case white) to seal the edge.

I would definitely wait for the seal to dry (if that’s what you mean) before doing the next layer. Did you burnish the edge of the tape as well?

I’m not sure what burnishing the edge is?  I used regular painters blue tape as well.

It means rubbing over the edge of the tape with something reasonably firm (repeatedly with your finger, maybe a round tooth pick, etc) to make sure you get a good seal.

I did rub my finger across the tape but nothing more then that.  I’m hoping I’ll be able to save the boat from a sudden end.
