CapnMac82 Posted November 23, 2019 Share #34 Posted November 23, 2019 You probably needed a finer tape (like Tamiya) for the explicit line, then the blue tape for the bulk of the masking. The blue painte3r's tape is meant for paint with much coarser pigments than used with modeling paint. For where it has run over, there are a couple of approaches. One is to mask the red (I'd try a clear packing tape not stuck down over-hard, and not burnished) then sand the red away with well-used medium grit sandpaper (note the idea there would be to only barely remove material--a slow process). The other way would be to go get a pint of Kilz or Benjamin Moore Binz primer, mask the red with a sharp thin tape (like Tamiya), then brush paint the primer over. Note that both of those primers will not look like they are covering up the paint, but they actually do. Note that the lacquer-based paints cover better, but are less nice to be around; they are also much harder to find at the home improvment store than the water-clean up version, which might want two coats. I have ued all four of those products as a professional painter--lacquer Kills can cover black, purple, maroon and the like in one coat, and allow a single coat of white over top--good stuff, if better suited for airless sprayers or HPLV sprayers than the average airbrush; water clean-up Binz will run through an airbursh if set very coarse, but will want two coats, well dried in-between. Duanelaker Posted November 24, 2019 Author Share #35 Posted November 24, 2019 I have it back in gray primer...sanded it down and startIng over. i use Vallejo paint and used hull red and red to make the color, one of them was specific to air brushing the hull red was not...I think I thinned it to much and then when it came out poor I didn’t stop. I’m new to air brushing but I have purchased a badger patriot 105 and have liked it much better then the 20$ air brush that came with my compressor 😝. I have far too many kits already purchased to give up now...it’s rather embarrassing. If I finished two kits per year I’d be done with them just as I retire in 15 years Perhaps I’ll try my luck on scratch building. anyways...I’m debating doing the white/black/red color scheme of the boat...any advice as to which I spray first and last and how best to mask off everything? I’m going to purchase Tamiya tape and see how that works. The Vallejo Air paint is nice and works pretty good unmixed right in the badger patriot. It is easy to disassemble and clean which was my biggest concern. Duanelaker Posted December 6, 2019 Author Share #39 Posted December 6, 2019 Well I tried a little more paint and stripe...I am wanting to move on with this project and although I believe in the future I will be able to create a better stripe (had better luck with the tape but need to gain more patience). I have to get better at applying less paint more frequently. Also, I’m not sure hull red was the right red as it was much darker than I thought. I ended up snapping off one and that irritated me. Right now I simply do a few figure 8s and then glue it. Personally, I glue all my knots because the last thing I want is a knot to come loose later and be frustrated trying to tie it back on with a short rope. After getting stuck in the Chesapeake Bay on a sunfish (and attempting to paddle with the centerboard) with my father he always kept a paddle on board as a safety measure. I don’t see any oarlocks on pictures of current crabbing skiffs though.
