HMS Triton by Edwardkenway - 1:64 scale

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I've had two or three hours in the workroom and have finally started to get some planking on the hull. I have fitted two strakes to either  side with the first sitting at the bottom of the gunports then the next on top of the first,  it will be the gunwale moulding on top of the second plank.

Working down to the keel is one more plank then the main wale but that is next time.

I've also run a plank on the inside to allow me to put the gundeck in. I decided not to do the lower deck although ther will be a section of deck planking midships that could be seen through the gundeck gratings.

Till next time 😊

Cheers.

IHi all, thanks LS,

Not a lot been done on Triton since last time, I've planked up to the sheer rail but till I get some more wood to do the main wale I'm not going any further.

Till next time,

Cheers

Hello again, my extra wood arrived today but didn't have the time to attempt fitting the main wale,  so I've fixed a piece of ply in the area underneath the hatches of the gundeck and planked it. It still has to be scraped or sanded and a coat of varnish.

Also I have fitted the stern frame. The counter will probably be fitted next time.

Thanks for the likes and comments, much appreciated.

Cheers 👍😀

Hi, the stern frame that I fitted yesterday has been removed today as it was too high and the counter would not have finished at the level of the main wale,  also the great cabin windows would have been part of the taffrel and the cabin with no windows.

It's been remodeled and set lower and the planking refitted to the framework.

The counter will have a second layer of planking to tidy it up.

The lower deck planking has had a scraping and a light sanding ready for an application of matt coat.

Thanks for liking in and the likes.👍

Till next time,

Cheers 😀

Hi Edward,

It's sad you had to remove some of your hard work but very pleased you noticed before it got too painful.

Your progress is great and l am enjoying the  build, thanks for sharing.

Best wishes as always,

The Lazy Saint.

Hi all,

Thanks for the kind words LS, I'm not too worried about a bit of deconstruction,  because it's how we learn and also if it's good enough for Dirk it can't be all bad😆.

But yes I'm glad I caught it before I got to far on with the stern. Hopefully I've finally got the stern sorted now as it has given me quite a bit of trouble on this build.

To have a bit of a break from that I've put the matt coat on the lower deck planking and fitted the beams for the gundeck , the photos don't really show the camber of the beams but there is one , honest!!!

The main wale is going to be a slower fit than I expected as I've never attempted to bend wood this thick before,  its 3mm x 9mm mahogany  and if it looks ok it's going to stay natural.

For the joints on the wale I'm doing the simpler scarf joint .

Thankyou to everyone for the likes and comments, they are always welcome.😀

Cheers 👍

Here's an easy way for that main wale.  Use two planks.  The first, would the thickness of the last top plank.  Then laminate in place another to give you the thickness you need.;)

Thankyou Phil it's appreciated.

Thanks Mark, that is the better way for sure. I've fitted the opposite side that way but in the same wood as the rest of the hull so the wale will be painted black now. I don't know why I didn't get thinner mahogany instead of the 3mm but that's another lesson learned! The mahogany I have surplus now will no doubt be used elsewhere.

Thanks for that simple solution that I didn't see 😖

I'll post some progress photos on the next update.

Thanks for the likes and comments 👍

Hi, a bit more re-modelling with the mahogany I'd put on for the main wale being changed for double plank construction in cedar as per Mark's suggestion as I was struggling to bend the thicker mahogany round the bow.

At the stern, the counter is planked and I've also started to plank the gundeck and sort out where the hatches and gratings are.

That's it for now,

Thanks for likes and comments,

Cheers

Hi, just a small update, stern counter sanded, made a panel for the cabin windows and dry fitted,  I think that the scroll top needs another look at but that will be after I cut the openings for the windows.

That's it for now.

Thanks for likes, tips and opinions gratefully received.

Cheers 😉👍

Ok, so this post sees the window openings cut and the sashes made. I don't mind admitting that they have definitely tested me (and my old eyes). Hopefully they'll look better when the details of the stern are done, although I not sure whether I can do detailed  carvings.

I'm just waiting for the glue to dry, so till next time,

Cheers 👍😀

Hi, I've cut the top of the stern to shape, and dry fitted it, not completely sure about it!! There be some remodeling yet.

The internal bulwarks have been faired, lots of dust and very awkward to do, and the first planks have been glued. Once the bulwarks  are planked I will carry on with the deck planking.

Cheers 👍😀

Hi all, thanks LS, I keep doing a little bit here and there. I'm pleased you like it 😀

Not a lot done, a few pieces glued, not photo worthy. I've still got a few bits to sort out then it's back to planking the hull, using Chuck's edge bend method.

See you all next time.

Cheers 👍😀

Hi, finished planking the gundeck,  just need to sand it and matt coat it. Things will slow down a bit now because of Christmas. Too much other stuff to do.

Hi, got a couple of hours in today, sanded the gundeck and one coat of matt varnish, it's going to need another fine sanding and another coat. Also started to paint the wales black.

Thanks to all for your support and interest 👍

  • 5 weeks later...

Hi, decided to do a bit more work on the full build, so I've started to plank below the wales. It's working out at 18 planks so will divide it into 3 belts. I'm using this as practice for Winchelsea so there may be planks on that may be redone if I'm not satisfied with them, please bear with me.

Tried Chucks method of edge bending with the two bow planks, I think by the end of Triton I will be getting it right more often.

Thanks Chad, Phil,LS, Craig for the encouragement and kind words. I can't give Chucks plank bending method enough praise for making planking the bow easier!!😆👏

I'm hoping to get back into the shipyard over the weekend.

I greatly appreciate the likes from everyone 👍

Got a couple of hours on Triton tonight and managed two planks on the bow, so I now have four runs fitted, only fourteen to go, then do the other side!20200110_221930.thumb.jpg.4b19a5c6d281f117dd73c6d21b34d03b.jpg

This is my only proper single plank hull(I know the Xsection was single plank but they were all short, straight planks) and I'm finding it difficult to keep the planks tight fitting, hopefully a bit of sanding will fill the gaps.
