Need CAD type program

Recommended Posts

DesignCAD has a curved line tool, that follows the points you give it, to give a smooth line for a frame, etc.

An example it this trailboard I made by tracing a scan from the ME Willie Bennett plans, using the curve line tool. I gave them this graphic and they now supply in their kit. Their graphics are color, I made this starboard one grayscale, so as not to infringe on them.

Hello Ab,

If what you show is made with DELFTship, I call that a masterpiece.

I also have used DELFTship but never realized the lines I wanted.

Maybe I miss the point with DELFTship because I believe that every point that you make is a control point.

So it is not a point on the hull. From the control points, lines for a hull are made by subdivision and you

can adjust these lines by moving around with the control points.

Every movement of a control point will affect several hull lines. For me that resulted in overly adjustments

and a lot of frustration.

Maybe I should give it a second chance as you prove that DELFTship can be mastered.

best regards,

   Kris

Hi Kris,

Personally I am not a man with enough skills and knowledge to make you any wiser, but I work with my favorite - co-operator Rene Hendrickx. I asked him to make a sort of mini tutorial how to transfer a 2D lines plan into a 3D image with the help of DELFTship. I will post his contribution here as soon a possible. Hope it will bring you some new insights.

Ab

Oh, and eh... the ship I showed is a masterpiece indeed. We worked almost three years on it and it is now in the process of being worked around in a virtual world environment on an internet site, allowing you to walk around in the ship and extracting information from every constructional part of the vessel.

'Soon to be seen in this theatre...':-)

I look forward to this. I have downloaded the DELFTship program and have dabled with it. It is clear that this is a great tool but also obvious that I am in new territory.

Thanks again,

Bruce

Hereby the first suggestions by Rene:

1 By default DELFTShip offers a pattern for a classical type of yacht.

The first challenge is to change that into the shape you want.

Looking at their site and the first 'tutorial', I found there were some features missing on the free version, which should not surprise anyone. I don't know yet if it will make any differnce. For instance, it looks like the pro version allows you to choose from a list of models as a start point. This is visible on the file attached at the bottom of post #36 but the link defaults back to the original (free) ship model template.

I mention this so Rene will not waste his time with features we cannot access.

My first attempt last night was encouraging.

What we are doing here is all possible in the free version.

The lines plan will follow soon. This is 'a 12 steps program' :-).

It takes several steps to insert a lines plan, we'll do one after another. If there are any questions on our way there, just scream.

The system differs a bit from other programs, which sometimes causes troubles with experienced users who worked with other systems, so stay close.

Before a lines plan can be inserted in DELFTship the elevation view, the top view and the body plan have to be separated.

As an example Rene took a lines plan of a sloop he previously made in DELFTship. The shape differs from the default DELFTship hull. Next time he will bring it into the program and show how the shape can be adjusted. Here the newly made lines plan:

How to import the side view.

Choose side view and edit background.

Click and hold the right top of the yellow image and stretch until both hulls match. Check and double check.

918122795_SCALEIMAGE.thumb.jpg.556013920191f472ce925e4015c5185d.jpg

Do the same for the bottom until they match ate the bottom line.

Click on the yellow part, which turns to white.

Now click and hold several points on the DELFTship hull and drag them to the new shape until they match. Make sure that in the end the fat black lines match perfectly. This takes some experience.

Now the outlines should be equal.

Next time: same procedure in top view and body plan.

Here is the new lines plan

END.thumb.jpg.1f097fa008e4115d59aa8e72594737ed.jpg

When we created the lines plan for the ship I showed on Januari 7 as an example of what Delftship was capable of, we worked solely from the specification contract in Witsen's book from 1671, so without a base lines plan. The contract specified eight frames with on every frame seven or eight positions. That was of course much more complicated than this example, but the program allows for such actions. Even with less stations DELFTship, being a ship design program, fairs the lines and completes the shape of the vessel.

It takes a while to master it, but Rene even succeeded in shaping the carvings with this program:

1471349384_AFB16.JPG.6d6e3ab4e7346ed3181c67c99c4ac9a9.JPG

Also the entire interior of the ship was built, which allows other specialists to convert it into a program allowing visitors to explore the ship in and out. This will be published soon on an internet site, accessible for anyone who is interested.

Thanks for your attention.

The problem with Rene's command of foreign languages is that he, being Belgium, is more oriented toward French than toward te English language. That's why I am trying to intervene in passing his considerable knowledge to this forum in the appropriate language.  Be patient, I am sure he is willing to help you out.

OK, here comes the first lesson in adding objects or parts inside the created 'shell'.

Let's for instance create a bench in our vessel at 260 cm from the stern.

choose Tool and then Box.

1059373022_TOOLBOX.thumb.jpg.462afad5280853d971673e035f7f8043.jpg

In the pop-up screen choose

X  2.6 m distance to the stern, X 2.9 for the width of the plank.

Y  0 m to the centerline, Y  1 m for the half width of the plank

Z  0.6 hight above base line (lowest point of hull, Z 0.64 for the thickness of the plank.

Create a new Layer: check.

1173216702_bank260cmvanspiegel.thumb.jpg.741916f8252c3892d163dee6d4cde46a.jpg

Next time how to create a bended shape, for instance a frame.

Ab, I must just repeat how grateful I am for this tutorial. It is an eye-opener, I did not think I would ever tackle any 3D modelling software, but maybe an old dog can learn new tricks.

OK, here comes how to create a curved shape inside a vessel.

First create a plank the way we did last time.  X 2.54/2.60 , Y 0.95/100 ,   Z  0.00/1.00, new layer

  • 2 months later...

I have been devoting a lot of time to DELFTship in the past few weeks while "social distancing."

This is the hull of the 1891 brigantine Galilee, in which my grandfather sailed between 1906–08. The hull lines are based on the G.C. Berger plans available from the Smithsonian HAAMS program. They need a lot of work to make them usable, which is why I used DELFTship.

The interior views of that old ship are really amazing!
