HMS Resolution ( AKA Ferrett ) by Gregory - Corel - Scale 1:50

Recommended Posts

A small update that involved more hours of work ( fun ) than you might imagine.

I built a capstan.

There are many capstans available out there from the various ship modeling sources, with different levels of detail.

There are also some great articles regarding capstans in the NRG data base,   Ship Model Furniture, Deck Fittings and other Details

I also acquired a set of the Winchelsea plans, after discussing the dimensions of Chuck's capstan for the Winnie project.

The basic design was around for over 100 years, and there are some nice drawings at the NMM, which pretty much match what I discovered in my

research.

j1629.jpg.c757d0eac59631ce88172fc174f7c24c.jpg

This one from Neptune' (1797)..

I recently reviewed the mini-kit from Master Korabel of their 1:72 capstan.

It has the level of detail I am looking for, but at 1:72 it is too small for  the scale of my ship at 1:50.

I scanned the parts of the Master Korabel kit and resized them to better fit my model..  ( No, I will not be offering these for sale..  😄 )

Cap2.jpg.748c0c82b14787139ee8a99c603a10b7.jpg

For what it's worth, just scanning, re-sizing then cutting, doesn't result in parts that go together well.  The interlocking tabs and slots, have to account for the thickness of the stock used.  Also, the kerf of my laser is not as fine as the high end machines, and I had to do a lot of tweaking to get an acceptable fit.

Compass.jpg.b41335205abc5add0e5ca3deaeaeb2e0.jpg

Realistic or not, I couldn't resist adding a little bling..  I hope I didn't go too far overboard..

I mentioned up-thread that the deck layout in the plans did not appeal to me, so the capstan is a replacement for a windlass shown on the plans.

Deck.JPG.5ce47b86b3fdd37a12d4663db9a8797f.JPG

The Chapelle  drawings, based on the NMM plans of Ferret, will be my basis for a deck arrangement.  I won't try to match it feature for feature,

but it gives me what I feel is a little more appealing than the kit plans.

Luck is just another word for good preparation.

Thats nice...but one thing all of the mfgs get wrong is the proper dimensions and thickness of the whelps and chocks.   They are much thicker than most capstan kits.  I can only guess this is because of economy.  They want all the parts on the same thickness sheet.  But doing correctly with different thickness to match those plans you posted is well worth the effort and cost.

Thanks.  I think it's great that you can point out these shortcomings.  It's how we improve our skill and effort.

I know I could have gone a lot further to match the actual NMM plans, but basically I was being lazy, and wanted to use one thickness of wood.

To give them credit.  Master Korabel did use two thicknesses, but not to the extent that is shown in the plans.

I think I have been challenged though, and I may have to re-visit this later.

Most would be very surprised at how thick the whelps actually are......and especially in comparison to the chocks.  For the earlier time period 1750's - 1770's as well and on ships other than the largest.....there were usually 5 whelps on the lower and six on the upper capstan.  With a very different kind of pawl setup than shown in that plan for Neptune.

Now I know I'm challenged..

I like the molding-like embellishment on the upper structure..

What do you make of the eyebolts on top?  What purpose ?

Thanks for that image..  It didn't come up in my search..

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been working on some of the deck furniture.

The kit plans did not provide for a companion out on the deck, and I believe there should be one.

I like this design which is a bit unusual and found on one of the contemporary models from our gallery..

Recalling the kit plans called for a windless which I replaced with a capstan.  I have a couple more grates in place along with the companion.

The plans also show some bitts with a pin rail behind the mast.

I just placed some riding bitts there, the cutter rigging doesn't need those belaying points.

In place of the windless I added some bowsprit bitts..

That's all for now.

Another quick update.

I've been working on the transom..

Not a lot of obvious progress, I'm sure many here know that designing and fabricating your own parts can eat up the clock..

I used to think to myself, when I bought those cool mini kits from Chuck, " If I only had my own laser ", without realizing what it takes to turn an idea into a part you can be happy with.

For a little perspective, here is part of the window frame in my quarter badge..

273603002_Windoframe(5).thumb.jpg.b08eec8bdb71bec35355d2a7a379e20b.jpg

1328751366_Windoframe(4).jpg.6e15e99648f3e05ee81f3645efbfcaf7.jpg

Here is a little bit of my adventures in laser land..

In making the window frames for my transom, this is an example of some of the considerations one has to go through.  I'm sure there are a lot of CAD gurus out there who can draw things precisely, send them to the laser and end up with perfect parts.  However, I'm stuck with 2D drawing apps that I am still learning how to use.  Then, you have to factor in things like laser power, speed, focus and the kind of wood you are using

Anyway, the picture above shows I'm getting pretty close .  The transom facade is 1/16 cherry, and my intention was to create a 1/32 recess on which the 1/32 frame would rest.  I miscalculated in cutting out the opening, and you can also see the frame is not symmetrical.

262994492_Windoframe(3).jpg.6978548b9ed746c62bb1a8b84ec40c63.jpg

Rather than re cut the transom, I made an insert for the frame to rest on..

724962565_Windoframe(2).jpg.31a977b919cc1123f5a56659aefc75b7.jpg

Ooops.   I forgot to correct the asymmetry with the sides of my frame..  Back to my computer and checking where I went wrong..

67200588_Windoframe(1).jpg.d1b019ce3866ffa7d176a786e900fcca.jpg

Ka ching!  Oh no!   My camera tells me I need to square up the inside of the lower corners of those frames..    Never mind that they will never be visible from a foot away..

Thanks for looking in.  Your AVS is a favorite of mine..

When it comes to ornamentation, the laser certainly doesn't compare to  the hand carving and CNC work we see from some of of our members.

However, I think it is a nice alternative to most of the kit ornamentation, and let's one add little touches that make a difference.

  • 4 months later...

Been a while since my last update, but I have made a little progress.

Base1.jpg.20a37df76a06c6dce9f05d9cf7a32519.jpg

One of my side projects has been to work on a display base and pedestals.  This picture is one of several veneered pieces I bought  on eBay a while back.

I used one of these for my Mary, which I think looks OK.

image.png.9f37851bb3034d548ad36bd62a6c506d.png

However, I wanted to make something a little more unique for Resolution, as well as practice my veneering skills ( or lack thereof.. )

I decided to try my hand at a bit of inlay work.

Inlay1.jpg.6a9250ce93a547a0d4785c2413ad9bf3.jpg

I glued strips of light and dark wood on top of veneer sheets.

GlueTip.jpg.101dabffd8f1de3a5eb68bcec1ef696e.jpg

Here is one of my little tool tips..  I use a plastic knife as a glue spreader.. Doesn't show that well in the picture, but it does a good job of making a thin layer of glue in little rows, that quickly even out..

Inlay2.jpg.3d6135d4155a6b690cc362db97835125.jpg

Here is my wood sandwich, from which I cut thin strips with my table saw.

Base2.jpg.c08ad6b7c6414995d3008f6eac31f6e7.jpg

I used a piece of burl veneer from my stash, and this is what I ended up with.

I will update shortly with a little progress on the boat itself.

This is the transom design I had been working on, but the longer I worked on it the more I felt like it wasn't in keeping with the boat as a whole.

I decided I wanted something a little more simple.

Transom.jpg.81d3e081f0e134ffc7b105b0ef25dc21.jpg

So I settled on this.

Rudder.jpg.44c176378e2811cc54a1dca8e76c7450.jpg

I hung the rudder.

Bowsprit.jpg.e0b15338e9e05dc3648ac01d0dedab0f.jpg

Made a bowsprit so that I could set the gammoning before installing the head rails..

Base4.jpg.d55dc81d3412a063b74fa145eec04004.jpg

Masting and rigging shouldn't be too far in the future..  I'm mostly working on the guns, and fiddling with some other details.  Should have an update on them soon.

Thanks for looking in..

Contrary to some rumors, I have not been sleeping on the job.

Asleep.jpg.22cbb5c4b48e8630e80a0ec949b45bf0.jpg

I have been working on the masting and some other odds and ends, as well as some non modeling projects that have been taking me away from this one.

A little of my technique and results follow

2004211812_Topmast1a.jpg.9946d4fbc503a5c6c1d99bf9c6a3e289.jpg

794702674_Topmast1.jpg.cd4de3dca814e27c06ea691addab77e0.jpg

I refer to my laser a lot, and here I chose to take care of the initial tapering of the topmast by cutting it with the laser.

If the plans look familiar, I'm taking some ideas from my Cheerful plans.

1686508324_Topmast2.jpg.cd090ce63bbf3cc171e0d8400500a3e9.jpg

I follow up with my Black & Decker unimat, which also drives my disk sander and ropewalk.

A couple of other things before I show the almost-finished mainmast/topmast assembly.

1309323922_Cleats2.jpg.16ffa1a325687cd96ecbf2b7b6d4fe08.jpg

I have some nice Syren cleats that are the right size,  but I wanted to stay with cherry as my main wood of choice for fittings on this build.

I cut them out, but found the little mounting pegs broke off too easily  because of the grain orientation, so I made a modification that makes for a strong mounting peg.  The joint will not be very noticeable when rope is in place.

1578927424_Hoops1.jpg.7a7c92816fbc68751bb5529959bd223d.jpgHoops1.JPG.97da594306af91cc0885825a0a8dddba.JPG

Next up, some mast hoops that will need to go on the mast before it is assembled.  I made these from cherry, with a method that Chuck demonstrated with Cheerful.

Hoops2.JPG.9f62b5cf7e08f5ca2945b7d54a9f09ea.JPG

I spin them and finish them on the rotary tool.

Who wants to guess how many of these I started with to get the few that ended up on the mast?

351269620_HoopDetail.jpg.c5a9feededf4b6946080639d0eec487f.jpg

I like the way the cherry looks..  ( No, I did not hide any breaks on the hidden side of the mast ..😁 )

I need to take a break tonight, but I will have a few more pictures of mast details tomorrow ..

Luck is just another word for good preparation.

I have the mast and topmast broken into smaller parts that make it easier to shape the pieces, rather than try to shape one long part.

It also makes it easier to make a new part if something goes wrong.

MastParts2.jpg.a2fab49b6962e829e6b0576ded295ddc.jpg

it should look something like this eventually..

Still working on cannon.  This breaching rope looks frayed because  I did  a lot of twisting and untwisting.

I hope to come up with a cleaner look..

Stay tuned..

It's been a while since my last update and I am close to start rigging, but I have been spending a lot of time 'playing' with my laser and learning some new software.

Over a year ago when I started this build I was talking about the guns early on. They turned out to be a mini project on their own,  and a real exercise in using my laser.

1870232474_1stgun.jpg.4959283d4f9c2caf11d4125f632274e0.jpg

Here is a flashback to my early gun experiment.   The walnut is definitely not a good choice.

Guns1.jpg.23255d2380a502c7fa4f9b3d15e1f186.jpg

I decided to go with cherry.   Here is a sheet with the carriage parts fresh out of the laser.

Guns2.jpg.3094b21a307291355174d2fb5500c9d3.jpg

My mini kit is a hybrid of different kits I have seen.

Guns3.thumb.jpg.9ea11fdced9a2eac96313d5c57d30dc6.jpg

It goes together tightly without a jig.   ( Glue not dry.  It practically disappears when fully cured. )

Trucks1.JPG.bba70c24aa63a573a0ccf4dc9442ac48.JPG

I use a brass collet in a small rotary tool to round off the axles.

Trucks2.JPG.6fbf4b01e326a3ecab4ab61dac8abad5.JPG  Trucks3.JPG.dbfdd3e9c4d06b5e8f83ab9dc1edc919.JPG

.. another rotary tool to clean the char off the trucks..

Trucks4.JPG.f90f28c065d256a96f2fe904f43dcb7f.JPG

The camera picks up more grain detail, than is apparent in person.  The color tends toward a pinkish, not unlike pear, that really doesn't show well here.

There is some WOP in my future..  I'll  be getting back with a finished gun soon..

Maybe even later today.

Luck is just another word for good preparation.

Yes, I do make a lot of parts with the laser...  If you look back through the log, you can see where I have used the laser.

Everything from the stem, keel, masting and fine parts like window frames.

I bought a relatively cheap ' K40 ' a couple of years ago ..  Similar to this:  K40 Laser

I have spent more than the original cost on upgrades and software, and it does very well for a hobby machine.

I was fortunate that it worked pretty good out of the box, but the upgrades make it a pretty worthwhile machine.

It would never be adequate for any type of volume production. which would cost several thousand dollars..

Fiddle and Faddle..    Who are those guys, anyway?

Capstan revisited.

613536872_Capstan1.jpg.f0f9c0b7e739797d0c6856016a0ded0b.jpg

This is my earlier capstan which I think could have done well in this model, with the final effort in mind being a deco piece..

However, as I go along I'm finding this project to be so many mini-projects.

Learning how to use my laser; 2d and 3d software, and making something I can feel satisfied with.

There is also the issue of so many challenging efforts here at MSW and all the " OMG! I wish I had thought of that ! " moments.

1526070_Capver2.jpg.c76d5998a92b3a16f502b78d0e1a3e19.jpg

Anyway, I made a new capstan.  This is a modified capstan kit from the Winchelsea project..

More fiddle and faddle coming up...

The kit provided swivel guns are not bad,  The mounts shown on the plans are fairly benign, and not much more than strip wood.

I proceeded to jazz them up a bit, and drew upon the look of various  swivel mounts seen here at MSW.

There are going to be 16 total, but I am going to hold off mounting them until most of the rigging is done.

My main go to pic was from a build of HMS Fly by Bill Maxwell over at Admiralty Models

Thats it for now..

Luck is just another word for good preparation.

I turned some typical commercial belaying pins into something a little more  presentable..

Much better 👍

Ladder going up to the quarterdeck.  Plan on a few more details there, like a railing of some sort..

Some progress on the rigging.

1298672844_FiddlefromLaser.jpg.eb4882e1444108544c5b80606d3d1fde.jpg

In this session I'm making some fiddle blocks. Here are the parts made with the laser from 1/32 cherry.

I borrowed the build method from Chuck..  I really like the blocks Chuck makes, but if I can make them myself, I can save a little expense, particularly when I mess up one or more trying to finish them.

Here are the pieces glued up.

The little tab is handy for holding it while finishing it up..  The cherry doesn't finish as fine as boxwood, but I like the color of the cherry and

it's really my go-to wood for this project.

Here is one of the backstays with the fiddle tackle.  Cheerful builders will find this familiar looking.

Thanks for looking in..
